Excuse my French, but how the heck did he do it?

I thought the game was doomed to be single-player forever.

Unfortunately, It's not exactly conclusive. The movement doesn't appear to be 'live' as it where. Player A doesn't appear to see Player B move until he switches to A.

We could merely be watching pre-recorded footage thats been edited and strung together. With the second players movement scripted and using nav points to mimic his previous movements.

Even if it's legit, he may never get much beyond that point.

The Gamebryo engine version used for Fallout 3 is not exactly multiplayer compatible, you can't just write some netcode and slap it on. He may be working on it for years to come. And previous attempts for Morrowind and Oblivion never got much beyond a similar stage even after years of work.

DevenTarn, maybe because he is switch the game windows? When we all play, we only play with 1 window, and so it would be best answered that way. You walking a dangerous line when you are skeptical of that video. Everything could be prerecorded and strung together . Exactly how far does one have to be trusted? We will see :(

Exactly, we'll see.

My point simply was about whether he really does have two different characters under his control. Such things -and it wouldn't be the first time- can be easily faked using scripts and editing.

Thats what I meant when i said 'It's not exactly conclusive'

If it is real then he's reached the same stage all the other online mods achieved. But again, you cannot just slap netcode onto the gamebryo engine when it wasn't made for it. None of the other online modes ever made it beyond the erly stages of Alpha and unless he gets luck with his coding and can actually access the source code itself, he may not get beyond the same point.

I wish him luck, but I'm not expecting miracles unfortunately.

Even if the guy had IRL video of him walking to two different computers, one could still claim it was faked.

If by editing you mean with the GECK, and by scripts you mean GECKScript + use of FOSE?

Th thing about youtube is that it's a good place for posting videos to lull people in with weird and wacky claims. Fake trailers for example (Trailers for the Oblivion mod Nehrim have been posted numerous times as Elder Scrolls V Trailers) Another fake claim is one thats popped up once or twice in the New Vegas support forums. (Download a suspicious file from a suspicious link, install it too your PS3 or Xboxes hard drive and it will magicall fix all the games problems on both consoles)

In other words don't take things at face value.

Admittedly, if he has acheived what he appears to have, then its the first major milestone. Unfortunately as the other online mods discovered, there's about 456,599 major milestones.

And yes, by editing I mean with the GECK, but also straight forward video editing.

VERY true. There are some weird people who WILL go to a lot of lengths to put false clamis of things they`ve done that can`t actually be done and has been faked one way or another or is not what it looks like. I`ve seen several, including Battlefield Bad company fakes.

Do`nt believe everything you see on utube just cos it moves. Some people like to make fantastical claims just for attention. Wait for proof, like you can actually download and play it. If they`re iffy about that, then be wary.

By the way, saw something like this for Oblivion years ago, that turned out to be fake- never heard of again.

The file is http://fallout3nexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=15596 and has been abandoned by the author (who claimed that forum reaction to the mod was why he would no longer work on it, but I imagine in the long run it would truly be due to the engine issues of not being designed as a multiplayer engine to begin with).

Either way, it is a bit of slick scripting to basically allow for a pseudo-multiplayer in the game (again, it is not true multiplayer but an NPC with scripts attached to it to allow it to be controlled via keys on the keyboard, and shares a single screen with orientation given only to the true player), though it is something more of a novelty than something you would actually try to use for a full and honest play of the game.

I don't think that's the same project.

And it will remain just a novelty. I'm all for being optimistic about a mod, but you don't stare at a tiger thinking that you're not on the menu.

True. I`ve seen many Mod ideas that are pie in the sky especially in theearly days of Oblivion- Some people basically wanting to recreate the entire Oblivion world into something in the far furture, etc with characters story, speech, laser guns, aircraft- everything.. However, I very rarely say so as I don`t want to discourage any modder. All modders need encouragement and if a person doesn`t like an idea it`s best to say nothing rather than discourage in my view. Some modders have done things I thought were impossible, so I always encourage even if it seems unfeasible. I just don`t hold my breath waiting for them.

I have on the odd occasion cautioned on how silly an idea is, but only if I feel the kid really doesn`t realise what an enormous job he`s undertaking. i`ve seen modders near lose the plot because they try to do too much.
