No excuse not to play HUDless

Immersion is aided by not having information at your disposal that your character would not have. The magical GPS compass with enemy radar detecter, the sneak crosshair that magically lets you know whether enemies have spotted you, the magical crosshair that floats in the air letting you know where to point your bow -- these are all things that interfere with immersion because they give you the player information that your character does not have.

Turn them off and you can get better immersion. But on a console, you have to sacrifice your health/stamina/magicka bars because the only thing you can turn off is the crosshair. Your only other choice is to turn off the entire HUD.

I don't see it as a magical crosshair. I see it as an aiming assist. In reality we have 2 eyes and a ton of info coming into our brain to assist with aiming. In the game we have none of that. In reality I can reach out and touch the coin on the table so I know exactly what I'm picking up. In the game I have no idea where my hands are because they're invisible. The cross hair becomes my tactile feedback as to where my hand really is. To me it's a reference marker and nothing more. I still have to aim, I still have to keep my target centered, I still make the same moves, it just helps me be more precise to replace the senses I don't have due to game limitations and lack of 3D sensory perception.

That's an interesting point of view. Are you talking about the crosshair or the sneak eye, or both? I suppose for some folks the crosshair might not interfere with immersion. My view of immersion is that the player should have the information the character has, no more, no less. Using that premise as a starting point, you make a good argument that a crosshair can be immersive. Not sure the same applies to the sneak eye. My personal preference is to turn both off, and I wish I had that option on console. But I had not really thought of it the way you describe. Not a bad anology.

Let's not forget that in Skyrim you actually have to aim slightly below your target because the arrow rises. Very realistic...

And so it ends. Well, OP, if you ever make another thread like this, try to learn from the response to this one and make the title and tone a little less "inflammatory" ;)

Well, my friend, if you turn off the crosshair/HUD this problem disappears.

EDIT: Also, as this link shows in real life you aim your arrow tip below the target to hit it when aiming using the "gap" method. http://www.stickbow.com/FEATURES/SHOOTING/gap.CFM So, I am not sure that I would agree that the Skyrim crosshair is an unrealistic portrayal of archery just because you aim the crosshair slightly below your target.

They don't go up. They start out slightly above the crosshair and then drop. The cross hair is just a reference where archery is concerned. It's not suppose to show exactly where the arrow will strike.

I like to play hudless... as it's more immersive... but I've yet to find a user-friendly way of doing it. Doing "TM" in the console removes EVERYTHING UI related. I tried an immersive hud mod, but it was buggy at the time. Maybe it's better nowadays....

@Jim2point0 Before this hits post limit, I just wanted to say "Welcome to the Forum" and I hope you find that better HUD mod you are looking for here.

Thread limit reached.

This discussion seems to be going around in circles, so I don't think another iteration is needed.
