No excuse not to play HUDless

I got rid of my compass and the sneak eye, but kept very transparent crosshairs for aiming and the meters.

1. Hawks move so your reference point of last shots moves. Not just left or right, up or down, but also backwards and forwards.

2. Arrows have a parabolic trajectory which you have to compensate by aiming higher, how much higher is determined by far the target is, which itself is charging every second.

3. After a certain distance your arrows itself cannot be seen, so you can't even judge how close your shots are.

You need to actually try it to know how hard. It is not something you cam theorycraft.

I have tried it with both bows and firebolts. First time I did it with a firebolt, I didn't find it all that hard. Sure the hawk moves and so does your point of reference, but I have been playing no crosshair Oblivion for a couple of years, so I have got some practice aiming spells and bows without a crosshair.

I honestly never shot a moving hawk with a bow because after taking a few shots with his bound bow, my Dunmer nightblade realized he'd have an easier time of it with his firebolts. I don't doubt that it would be wicked hard to hit a moving hawk with a bow even with a crosshair. After all, as you say, you have to take into account the parabolic curve of the arrow, the movement of the hawk and the distance/speed of the arrow (which varies dependign on the draw weight of the bow). Even with a crosshair, the center of the crosshair is not going to be where you want to aim to hit a moving hawk. Because by the time you aim, the hawk will have moved and there is the curve of the arrow trajectory to consider when aiming at something that far away.

I agree. For immersion, you should know how you are feeling, and the health/magicka/stamina bars give you that information. If I could keep those on and turn off everything else I would but you cannot do that on a console. The only point I was making is that it is not that difficult to play without those bars and the benefits to immersion of not having sneak crosshair and compass outweigh the loss of the bars. If you are on a PC, by all means keep the bars. They are invisible anyway when not in use.
No worries, didn't miss that part of your post  Just quoted the little bit from above to help illustrate my experiences with this mode of gameplay.
Normally, I do use Immersive HUD - it is very convenient, but for the sake of this thread, I turned HUD off completely, to offer what results I could.

I find this important, since a lot of folks don't have access to mods. Sure, some of us can just throw in a mod and say "ok, fixed, I'll move on", but if the game could be better for all users right of the box, then it is something that should be looked into. This sort of thing is the stuff to remember when they start up the discussion forums for the next game (if applicable) - specifically, there should be more toggle-able HUD options. [And they do read some of those. Several things from pre-release threads made it in (especially, but not limited to, things that were discussed in consecutive threads)].

Heh, I'm the other way. Can't hit a hawk with spells to save my life, but had a fun time in Solitude sniping them with a bow

I shot a hawk with a bow and arrow on the first try once. Granted I was using my hud, but it wasn't all that hard. Made me feel like a right bad ass though to shoot a hawk out of flight. I think I actually did a dance too.

snip

All debate aside, and I do consider it that, I took nothing you said personally and apologize if I said something of such nature.

But have you triedhttp://skyrim.nexusmods.com/downloads/file.php?id=3222

I don't know if you are a PC user or not, and I feel sorry for Turija  but it lets you disable things like the compass and crosshair, but you can still have your health/stamina. Or you could also configure it so when you are using a bow you have a crosshair, and when in sneak mode you have a compass. It's pretty nice, I just disable my entire HUD but it's a good way for people who still want health bars to also play a bit more immersively.

Edit: Would be nice to link it wouldn't it? :D

I hope they do consider it for future games. They went to the trouble of developing health/magicka/stamina bars that were invisible when not in use to avoid screen clutter, but did not give us the option of turning the other stuff off, like sneak crosshair and compass. If we had that option, more of us could enjoy those "invisible" health/magicka/stamina bars.

You also have no excuse not to play at fov 50 or less.

You can look your opponents in the face and enjoy their reactions as your weapon makes contact. You also get a good view of the high res texture pack you're using. If you look to the left or right, there is no screen there. Whatever is in front of you is in front of you where the screen is. Yes, no excuse for not using no hud and no excuse for not using fov 50 or less.

Or http://steamcommunity.com/profiles/76561197988732882/screenshot/648745380513638877/?tab=public. It's called a http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Head-up_display for a reason, you know ;)

I don't need an excuse. It's a single player game and I play how I want.
I think this is the only appropriate response to this topic.

Where does everybody get off thinking that he's forcing his opinion or preaching?

He merely stated that people should give it a try.

Not to mention, he didn't even specifically state that people should give it a try: he just stated that it is an enjoyable method of gameplay for himself.

(I smell an angsty forum community.)

I would not play without the HUD ~and scarcely ever play FPP.
(Not my interest.)

** The exception being when I turn off the menus for screen shots; for those I prefer no HUD elements to be in the way.
You lose too much information IMO. ~Shooters either... If I play Shadow Warrior or some other shooter, I usually retain the ammo lists and health meters to give me an idea of what I would logically know in the situation.

My only problem with playing without the HUD is that I can't see info about things when I hover over them, like peoples names, the little thing that says "search" or whatever when you hover over a dead body, etc. But I gave the no HUD thing another try recently, and once I got used to it (which took a little while), I definitely found the game more fun that way!

I reject your reality and insert my own.

You may think no hud is good. Cool, great, fantastic. I don't.

If you want a REAL challenge, play Skyrim with a blindfold on.

One time I tried playing with my controller upside down... It was so confusing! But what if someone were to play HUDless, blindfolded, and with their controller (or keyboard, if that's even possible) upside down? Now that would be the true challenge!

I play with it very low, so I can still see titles and names and if the quest directions are too vague, I can see the objective.

'But I need to see my health and stamina meters'

No, you really dont. ...
Playing without the compass is good enough for full immersiom. You can see your healthbar, which is useful if you want to progress in the game.
