You get most things by playing the game or completing challenges. (clothing and weapon customization). You level up by getting EXP, upon leveling up you get skill points and a skill slot to get new abilities.

I thought once you level up you got a skill point that you use to purchase a skill or skill upgrade?

Yes. That's what I said. You get one skill point for leveling up, which is used to buy new skills or upgrade the ones you have. In addition you get an extra skill slot. This way you can buy more different skills. Compare the skill slots with an RPG-like inventory. Each level you gain one extra space to fill in, but it's not obliged/possible.

The way I understood skill slots, you get 3 total active skill slots and any number of passive skills.

The way you describe it, gaining a skill point and a skill slot every level, even if you spent every skill point you gained on a different passive skill, you would never run out of slots, so it doesn't make sense.

Didn't one of the devs say on the SD forums that "you can have as many passive skills as you have levels"? That would mean there are no passive slots.

That clears things up. Sounds like it works similar to Battlefield unlocks or maybe like the Crysis 2 demo unlocks....

I'm aware that you can only use 3 total active skills in a match, but I'm just talking about the amounts. If you can get as many passive skills as levels, then it's basically the same as saying that you get one skillslot per level, or not?

I hope we could get a clear statement from SD how the whole abilitysystem exactly works in the current build.

Having the same number of slots as skill points is the same as saying there are no limits. Its easier and less confusing to just tell people that they can have as many passives as they like.

What if you start with 2 skillpoints for example or what if you get more than one skillpoint for reaching certain levels. (I guess it's improbable or I need to get my facts straight) then you won't have the same amount of points and slots. I never said or implied that there are no limits, because there's a level cap that determines the max amount of points you can get and the max amount of different passives.

You get 20 skill points total, that's confirmed. The level cap is also 20, also confirmed. Saying you also get 20 skill slots would be a bit silly, since that would never restrict you, so it wouldn't ever be programmed in.

No, it's not, because passive skills do not use slots, only active abilities.
