Expanded Universe Book

Hello, all!

I'm sure I'm not the first, last, or only person to express his love for Fallout in any way shape or form. In fact, I'd make a safe bet that not only was I in diapers while most of you were beating the Enclave, but that I was probably more focused on Pokemon and Garfield than on the New California Republic. But that's a bit of a side tangent. The point is that I love Fallout.

I am a major fan (as I'm sure most of you are) of this series. It has been my delight to play these games, and I can safely say that nothing quite compares to the unique experience and universe of Fallout. But this is where I have a problem, you see. My problem is one that is not very easily remedied. I can save Tandi a million times, but the game almost always ends the same way. I can ravage my way through the Capital Wasteland and defeat aliens on their own mothership, but what happens after all that is said and done? For the love of God, once I've beaten Caesar's Legion and driven them off, I can not for the life of me do it again. There needs to be more. It takes time to make a good video game, takes even longer to market it, and within a day of being a couch potato, you can't believe that you've already beaten the game so hard that it is reminiscent of a boxing match with Muhammad Ali.

I'll stop the stupid metaphors.

The point is, I need more. I am a very patient man, but I can't wait for the next Fallout game. DLC's are cool but they don't go in depth enough either, and are extremely based on regional aspects. Not only that, but the game developers have lives outside of this game and I don't want to be the one fan who is demanding of them at all times. In fact, through suggesting a book idea, perhaps it would lighten their load and allow them to work on other projects or take a break.

Would a book, series of books, or even graphic novel/novel help this universe expand? 4 real games (I know there are other official games, but they pale in comparison to the main games) does not leave a lot of room open for a well-known universe. I've scoured the Fallout bibles, I've gone through nearly every page on fallout.wikia.org, and I've played every Fallout game that exists. There needs to be more.

I am personally willing to write, help write, sponsor, be involved in, or any dereliction of those options, a Fallout series or novel that takes on the universe of Fallout. Somebody has to be thinking the same thing as me.

Uhmm, it would not make sense.

It would seem strange to just tell us what everything is like everywhere else.

Depends on who writes it. I vote for Chris Avellone and the other Devs of Obsidian.

I don't think there is that much to write a series of novels about really. Keeping canon orderly is hard enough without novels messing things up.

It could be like an encyclapidia with all of the details about different creatures. (they should make it look like it's been through hell and back) The cover can say it was written by some ingame character.

It would have details on weapons, factions, history, legends, gangs, creatures, locations, and plants. That'd rulr.

I read the dnd books they completely messed up the dnd world, with the exception of the gygax greyhawk originals, i read the halo books, and now some have to be rewritten because they changed the storyline, i could list a ton of other series of books ive read where the company gives the writers the right to put in anything that goes with the story their writing even if it completely goes against, the original storyline and put in nonsense things and characters, just so they can placate fans who want more merchandise, and so they can pocket more money from junk pulp novels. I think if the books were written by true fans who understand and care about the franchise, rather than some hack pulp writer who uses a ton of literary license to justify their stories, even if it makes nonsense out of the world setting.

I don t see how it could hurt. They d need to keep it pretty close to the games, but I can separate fantasy from fantasy.

I'd much rather have a comic series going instead.
Each story is anywhere from 3 issues to 12 issues.
After the story is over a new one is started.

So a couple of fast examples:

Undertown - 5 issues
The Jackals - 8 issues
A Nightkin Life - 3 issues
Talon Company, The Origin - 5 issues

Et cetera.

This would be awesome as it would really expand the universe at a great scale.
A book on the other hand will very very slowly deal about one story and give some new lore.
The problem I have with a book is that it doesn't have a great range of freedom which a Fallout product needs to have.
A comic book could switch from story to story with no problem.

I think it would establish the world more, for good and bad. The games would be limited to invent new tech and factions in areas that might get explored by the EU "thing" but iw would be quite awesome still...

I don't understand why there are no books. As long as someone competent writes them and sticks to the story (and it doesn't turn out like the horrid Doom books) it'll be fine

I would love a Fallout Anthology. Just a collection of short stories much like the ones you suggested however I don't like the idea of comics. Keep in mind this is 100% due to the fact that I am poor, and comics cost way to much per entertainment value to me. Your Jackals idea would cost around 32 bucks alone :sadvaultboy: .

While I would love to see any new post apoc books I am still undecided on Fallout books. If handled right it would be grand... however World of Warcraft has for ever corrupted any longing for a set of books following a still evolving game.

The book Cataclysm, which is a precursor to WoW's expansion, had pivotal moments that should have been in the game. Not just main characters, but faction leaders died, and changed. All moments that should have been shown, or at least talked about more in game.

The only way I can compare it would liken it to Fallout the novel where Elder Lyon dies of old age, daughter Lyon is missing on assignment, and the Outcasts take back over the DC Brotherhood. Fallout 4 the locals are trying to survive under a harsher, and domineering Brotherhood.

Meh I don't know maybe it just jaded me... Hell I don't even really have anything to be upset about I read the bloody book...

I wouldn't mind it, might be something cool to hold us over until the next game which might be at least four more years off. It would have to be done right though, not written by somebody who's never even worked on one of the games before and wouldn't do anything but butcher the cannon and lore of the series.

The last thing the Fallout forum needs is more canon arguments.

If the books were declared non-canon from the get-go, I don't care either way.

I would love a Fallout Book series but not ones set after the fallout game till the next one comes (I.E not one what deals with the events after NV till Obsidian or so makes the sequal to it)

Can set alot of short stories alone between Fo1 and 2

Though would love to see a prequal book based on 3 stories of the NCR first outtings at the mojave, House waking up from his coma and Caesar forming the legion, each storie details till and abit after the 1st battle of hoovar dam.

Not really, I'm not into grapic novels.
Some massive encyclopedia style tome full of all the dev teams acid trip ideas, mixed in with timelines, hints for future tittles and a general "wasteland survivors guide" feel may be nice.
A series of fiction again no, have you read most fantasy / sci fi fiction?
Only a very few actually are decent enough to read let alone pay for, in "game fiction" I've not read one even the TeS book "infernal city" is pretty shoddy ( imo. )

It would have to be purely by those that work on the games, based on those game on events and history / rumours quirky sci - fi humour / dark post apocalyptic vision of survival and progress.
Hopefully with input from previous devs especially Tim Cain and Chris Avelonne to shed a whole lets make it wide, wild and cross game series vibe.
