Expanding the Fallout Universe

Post » Mon Nov 22, 2010 12:22 pm

So, recently I've been wondering about the expanded scope of the fallout universe. A few threads, like my own about fallout tie-ins and another about a fallout game set in hawaii, have really made me interested in future settings for fallout materials, not just games, but any form of storyline, be they simply mentioned in a game, a footnote in a story or an entire game unto themselves. I've been thinking about Europe, mostly, how it recieved a "double whammy" with the resource wars and then the nukes, yet presumably would not have been affected by the FEV.

Two areas I'm really interested in would be Switzerland and the Mediterranean sea. Switzerland, as of 2010, has its own nuclear bomb shelters built into the alps and room enough for 95% of the Swiss population. Were a nuclear war to occur... would Switzerland's population be unharmed? Would other individuals tried desperately to get in? Would Switzerland have been invaded and its bomb shelters taken over? Or maybe the European Commonwealth forces Switzerland to let others into those shelters? An area so prepared for a nuclear fallout NOW could be very interesting in the fallout world as well, not to mention the alpine setting would be extremely refreshing take when compared to the mostly brown and gray locales of the Capitol Wasteland and Core Region.

Second, I've also been thinking about how, in the fallout world, water is always a BARRIER to the game world, rather than incorporated. Granted, it's not feasable to sail west from California to Japan, but even so... fallout has always been an "inland" setting. What if you had a sea smack dab in the middle of a game area, like, say, the Mediterranean? Not to mention it's right in the middle between Europe and the mid-east, the two combatants in the resource wars? Imagine how the various cultures, islands and coastal peoples would've reacted to a post apocalyptic setting. Rather than raiders, you now have pirates. Rather than the neomedieval organization of the BoS, you have neoclassical settlements taking their cues from Greek and Egyptian and Roman history.

What other areas would you like to see elaborated upon in the fallout setting, and how would you like to see them treated?

I'd like to see what happened to the Russians,I mean they are a Major player so they would no doubt have received some nukes as well

I think Britain would be an excellent place to do one. Though I would want a Brit developer to do it.
Although I think China would be the next logical place

I'm not so sure, whatever role Russia played in the real world seems to have been supplanted by China in Fallout. We barely ever see any references to Russia, even fewer to the USSR and absolutely none with reference to the fact that the US and USSR were enemies of any sort- in fact, in Fallout 1, the daughter of a Russian Diplomat can be one of the player characters from Vault 13, implying that they had pretty good relations.

I think that there should be a Fallout game where you start out in a nice town before a nuclear war. Then you hang around there, then There is a nuclear war and you have to adapt and survive from the very start right after a bomb is dropped near your city/ town. that may sound a little confusing, but i think it would be cool and FUN!!!

So a game set in 2077? Eh, aren't the majority of the survivors of the fallout setting either people who were released from vaults early or who went into some other kind of shelter? I mean, I imagine if you're anywhere remotely near the open when the bombs fell at best you'd be a ghoul and at worst a puddle of radioactive goo.

I would really like to play a prequel. You take refuge in a cavern or possibly an unfinished vault, when the bombs start to drop. You hide out for a month or so but when supplies run out you have to go foraging. Raiders. Rogue military. Children of the Atom types (though a little more militant) and the beginning of the mutations.

I think it would be interesting to see how various cultures would handle an Fallout sort of situation. We can't really call it fallout, although we could call it someting like: Post Apocolyptia: Japan, ir PA:Switzerland, with each game incorporating some form of ethnic culture and psychology.

Norway would be interesting to see. Maybe its vikings and so on there : p And since Norway probably played a big part in the Resource wars (Because we got oil, lots of it ) Then we would probably be mentioned. If they where to include Europe in a future game.

well then China may have nuked em,but even if they didn't receive and Nuke's Directly literally hundereds went off in the world so a whole lot of the Earth would be Ir-Radiated even Russia,I am an American but I am still fascinated by the Ruskies,I would like to see how their Culture survived a Nuclear Holocaust

Man, if anything I'd imagine Japan would be all cyberpunk. Besides, Japan's the only country that's already been nuked. They, at least, know how to react to such a situation.

You've got to remember that they were stuck with 1950's style's.

Also i don't know if the rest of the world is like this.

I was doing some searching on what Japan was like in the 1950's. I assumed that they would have had a semi-American feel to their culture, due to the post-war occupation. In the process of my searching a found a great little flickr gallery with photos of Japan in the 50's and thought I'd share.

Japan - 1950

Has it's own unique feel for sure, but by far the most interesting thing I stumbled upon was this little guy...

1950's Mazda T2000
http://japanesenostalgiccar.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2009/05/mazdat2000.jpg

Imagine something like that running on a small fusion reactor, a few minor tweaks, and it would fit perfectly in the Fallout Universe.

I wonder if Japan would just end up being absorbed by the US, simply due to it being a strategic location for any action against China (similar to it's use throughout the Korean war).

Sadly I don't think we'd see much of the cyberpunk Japan we have today :( .

europe, etc

I've always felt Fallout was an America-specific game for a big reason: the way American culture interpreted Science! and the future in the 50's is the back-bone of the game. Take that away and you don't really have Fallout, you have--I don't know, STALKER or something. What I'd rather see Bethesda or (hopefully) Obsidian do in the future is expand the Fallout Universe by way of working within the time-line and the rest of the U.S. creatively. There's more than enough diversity here and time on that time-line to make a hundred more Fallout games, imo.

I would like to have it be in my home state, Oklahoma. Not for the reason because there is a lot to see down here in Oklahoma, but for the reason I live here and it might be cool. A lot of the farm land would be destroyed though, so a lot of it would be a very open range environment with some houses and farms left...but you have down town Oklahoma city, Tulsa and some other places also. But in the Fallout world, Oklahoma might be quite different but not all the way. And did ya know Fallout 3 mentioned something about Oklahoma once?

Sometimes while traveling in neighborhoods of DC, when you look into a mail box you'll find a Letter from Vault-Tec about some people being rejected for a place in a Vault there:

Dear Safety-Conscious Citizen -

We are writing to inform you that your family was not selected for inclusion in your chosen Vault-Tec facility. Your deposit has been retained, and your application added to a waiting list for your preferred Vault. In the interest of your family's security in the event of a minor nuclear event, please consider relocating to one of these areas, where Vault-Tec facilities are available without a waiting list:

For a full list of Vault-Tec facilities with available accommodations, in exciting locales such as Oklahoma and newly-annexed Canada, contact your local Vault-Tec representative!

Vault-Tec wishes you and your family the best of luck in the uncertain future. Best regards;

Vault-Tec

I would love to see my motherland of Chicago in full destroyed form (partially because I'm not a really huge fan of the city). I also think it would be interesting to be a survivor of the war, and even have becomming ghoulified be part of the story. Running with this, maybe you could be one of the Canadian Resisistance soldiers. You'd start out in pre-war Canada, and end some few hundred years later, maybe around the time of FO3 or the reconstruction of society.

I like that.

For the first little bit of the game it's like Metro and you're stuck underground for a little while fighting stuff down there, but eventually you get to go above ground and can enjoy an expansive Fallout universe.

I would like to see the United Kingdom in a Fallout game. Perhaps meet up with the rest of the Tenpenny family? (It states in one of the FO3 loading screens that Allistair Tenpenny was a British refugee.)

I really just want to see what the Map of the world would look like after the bombs drop. Maybe Japan wont exist anymore, or the oceans dried up...the geography of the world could probably have changed completely, this could really be a (forgive me for saying it) Game Changer.

well, i say you have enthusiasm...but it would feel like fallout.

the geography would really be crazy. Chinese highlands wiout any grass, mountains probably flattened by nukes! so many changes...
