Experience Point Assignments

Post » Tue May 17, 2011 3:10 am

When you kill a molerat, you get some number of experience points (6+?). That number varies of course, depending upon how recently you have had a good night's sleep and perk (swift learner) assignments and possibly other things that I am not aware of. What I would like to find is a site that gives the base experience for everything (from lockpicking to quest rewards to monsters to...) and then a formula for how those base points are changed by sleeping, swift learner perk, etc.

There must be some such site, because there seems to be for everything else.

Well, I'll break it down, maybe that will help, as I do not know such a site.

It depends on the difficulty you're playing on for combat, higher difficulty, more exp per kill. Some things don't change with difficulty, such as lock-picking, hacking, speech checks, and discovering locations. Each of which will give 50 exp except the last which gives 10 exp.

It is then modified by a percentage if you're "Well Rested" which means you slept in a bed you own, (or any bed if you have a certain perk). It also depends on the Swift Learner Perk which adds 10% exp per rank, if Im not mistaken.

I hope that puts things in perspective, perhaps the http://fallout.wikia.com/wiki/Fallout_3 has some info. The Vault as the website is known is like a bible, in a way, but it is known to have some flaws. It has a section for each Fallout game.

Ummmm.... Your statement "each of which will give 50 exp..." seems different than what I have seen. I am playing on very hard difficulty. I have 3 of the "swift learner" perks. I never sleep. When I pick a very easy lock (or hack a very easy computer) I get 26 points, not 50. I assume the 20 points are the base and I get 6 more due to the swift learner perk. What I am looking for is a list of those base experiences. I could guess at most of them myself based on my having played FO3 all the way through about 6 times, but there has to be an experts list somewhere.

When I play, I keep a paper log of each experience point that I get. It is an amazing way to document the gameplay. I can follow my character's progress all the way from the rad roaches that are killed in Vault 101 to the final tribal killed at point lookout. Of course, it is a bit costly in time, but being retired, time is no object.

That's strange as I get 50 exp every-time I pick a lock, hack a computer or succeed at a speech check, and Im sure of that.. Maybe a glitch, maybe a perk, I don't know.

Oh yeah, another thing incase you didn't know already, the EXP is displayed in the stats. screen in the upper right corner. Incase you wanted to see it. :P

How much experience you get when picking a lock or hacking a computer depends on the difficulty level of the task. The higher difficulty, the more experience. It is the same way with killing critters, Radroaches only give you a few exp, while Deathclaws a bunch.

I've noticed that the experience award for lockpicking, hacking, and etc seems to be based on the difficulty of said lock. Easy 25, Average 50, hard 75, very hard 100, or something like that

When I play on very hard difficulty with 3 levels of "swift learner" I get the following experience for locks:

Very Easy 26
Easy 39
average 52
hard 65
very hard 78

The closest I can figure, the following would be without swift learner:

Very Easy 20
Easy 30
average 40
hard 50
very hard 60

I believe that these would go up if I slept in a bed I owned. I also believed they would go down if I backed off on the difficulty level.

My reason for getting into this research is that I do not like how easy it is to get experience. I am currently at level 42 (I use SETGS to increase the maximum character level) and still have about twenty locations to investigate before finishing the base game. Then I have to do the four addons that I have (BS, Pitt, Anch, and Point LO). The last time that I did everything, I got to level 56. My next game will try to minimize leveling by not taking any "swift learner" perks and doing whatever else I can to keep experience low.

Question: Does Intelligence have anything to do with experience??? Or is it just skilll points. I will continue to play on Very Hard Difficulty, just to keep the game interesting, so I cannot limit experience that way.

Just skill points.

As others have said, lockpicking and hacking will give you different XP points depending on the difficulty level of the lock or terminal. General difficulty level for the game also modifies XP you get for killing enemies, as well as the Swift Learner perk and the Well Rested bonus. Finding new locations always grants 10 XP, regardless the difficulty level. I don't know about speech challenges, but I guess you get more XP depending on how hard the speech challenge is. I also think that XP earned for disarming mines and traps is a fixed value, but I could be wrong.

Mines etc are impacted by swift learner. If I recall, mines start at 5 and go up to 7 if you have all three Swift Learner perks.

It seems I was mistaken. I guess lockpicking, speech, hacking etc. do depend on difficulty.

Sounds like http://www.fallout3nexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=10597 might be right up your alley.

Are the fractions of additional XP from Swift Learner actually retained and accumulated? Because they do not show up in the popup notices of XP gained.

Say for example, I'm playing on easy Difficulty, and I kill a mole rat = +2 xp. With Swift Learner Level 1 I _should_ technically be getting 2.2 xp, but of course it does not display that.

I'm hoping that in fact, it (behind the scenes) records the additional fractional xp and they accumulate as they are supposed to?
