My Experience with Crysis 2

Post » Mon Jan 31, 2011 10:08 am

Well, I picked up a copy of Crysis 2, it installed fine, I read some posts on here about the auto-patcher not working right, so I used the manual patch that was posted in the forums. It patched fine, the game run fine, until it crashed. I was about 10 minutes into the campaign and I get a nice message telling my that Crysis 2 has stopped working. Now, I'm lucky to even get it back up and running. Until I finally did, and it was working pretty good, I was fiddling around with the new features in the Nanosuit, and then I did a Powerkick on a table, and my computer froze, and I got a BSOD? I was shocked. I haven't even tried to play the multiplayer yet until I see a patch come out to fix the problems that everyone is having, cause I get the feeling that there's not many people playing the multiplayer right now. Also, whenever I do the powerslide/baseball slide, the screen goes black, with the exception of the HUD. So at the moment...I don't really want to play Crysis 2 anymore. And this was 10 minutes into the campaign...

My Specs:

Windows 7 SP1 x64
3GB RAM
250GB Hard Drive
NVIDIA BFG 8600GT OC Video Card (funny thing about this, Crysis 2 always nags me that my card is unsupported, but really I can play it just fine on the "Medium" setting in the game at about 25fps)
Intel Core 2 Duo E6300 1.86Ghz Stock Speed ( Currently OC'ed to 1.96Ghz)

I played the multiplayer demo just fine, no crashes, no graphical bugs. It's like the final build of the game is somehow less stable than a beta version of the engine? It's just depressing, cause I've been excited for this game ever since I finished the Crysis 1 campaign. Also, why isn't the Sandbox3 included?! I don't really care about the whole DX11 thing, as my graphics card doesn't even support it. I'm going to see if I can load the game once more, and see how things go from there.

Your graphics card is old and not supported. 8000Gt is minimum spec.

But it worked perfectly on the multiplayer demo. Nothing was displayed incorrectly, no performance problems at all.

I have just encountered 6 more crash-to-desktop events, and 1 more BSOD. I now refuse to even open the game until I see a patch come out. At the moment I'm playing on 1280x720 on "Advanced" and getting about 20-30fps.

Need more info about BSOD, what is the relevant message? Set the windows dump file to small, upload it and post a link, that way you will be actually helping.

I had disabled the Windows dump file when I first installed Windows 7, as I usually encounter a BSOD once every year at the most. I will try later and recreate the bug in the game and see if It'll generate a BSOD and then upload the dump file. But from what I remember, the BSOD said "IRQ_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL", and the file with the problem was one of the NVIDIA driver files. I have the latest drivers, 266.58 and every other game works perfectly except for Crysis 2. Perhaps a new driver update from NVIDIA will fix the BSOD problem?

Did you OC your memory? That usually causes that BSOD.

I thought i'd type in my Crysis 2 experience so far.

I installed my game 24th March with few problems. Initially i mixed up my redeem code for my serial, which is on the back of the retail manual. Added my redeem code at this point patch 1.1 had been released. When logging into gamesas account i could not find my bonus content. So spent a bit of time reading on the forum. I read a post saying their Gamspy ID account had the bonus content. (I remember when playing the multiplayer demo i had a problem logging in with my main email address. So created an account assigned to my other email address. I didn't at the time even consider it was anything to do with my Gamespy account.)

Logged in decided to try some multiplayer first off. Was pleasantly surprised to see games of 16 players. Played one game as a warm up, which was fun. I enjoyed the multiplayer from demo.

Loaded up the single player. Tried with my graphics settings set to Extreme. This setting seems a bit beyond my graphics cards reach as running the game on this setting is stutters. (My rig is i860, 4Gb mem, Gainward Golden sample GTX 260 216 core, Windows 7 Home premium) I am planning to get myself a new card maybe a 560 ti or 6950. I run my graphics setting on very high and it runs very well. I still think the game looks great, although you can see some low res textures and lower polygon models than you would expect for a PC game. Still the games runs very well indeed and still looks impressive.

I think the game is very cool. I am currently really enjoying it. The Nanosuit is definitely back in business. With the exception of a few bugs. Melee seems to fail on certain enemies (like the dark Cell solider who steps out of a vehicle just outside the castle in the Second Chance chapter. The pistol also seems to fail to reload after you fire one shot.

Something that bothers me a bit more is the functionality of the middle mouse button for the Nanosuit. It is not very responsive in comparison to the one in the first Crysis. I also find it difficult using the middle mouse button over keyboard keys. It seems to bring me out of my sights when i try to use the middle mouse button to uncloak shoot and then re-cloak. It's not a new a new element of balancing the suit abilities as i can do this fine using the keyboard keys.

I think this game is pretty cool and i am glad i own it.

Nope. I didn't OC my system memory, quite frankly I'm not sure how. Haha.
But if you mean the graphics card memory, then yes I did overclock it. But you'd think it would be affecting every other game I play?

Update:

I have also just encountered another problem...
Crysis 2 has apparantly "forgot" my profile. All my campaign progress = Gone -.-

Update 2:

After some digging and research, it appears that the config files for my profile in the Saved Games folder are blank. But when I open the "default" user's config files, there are contents. My guess is that they got corrupted when I had the last BSOD.... yay.

Update 3:

I copied the 3 .xml files from the "default" profile's folder and overwrote the blank .xml files in my own profile folder, it appeared to have restored my campaign progress!

Update 4:
Because I'm using the "default" profile template, all of my unlockables are gone.

Update 5:
I encountered another BSOD, but forgot to re-enable the dump file (doh!). I re-enabled it now, and restored my graphics card's clock settings to the factory defaults.

(See my previous post's updates for a review on what's happening)

I just started playing again, with my stock clock speeds on my graphics card, and guess what. A BSOD.
I uploaded the crash dump file: http://www.megafileupload.com/en/file/307220/032611-17875-01-rar.html

With all of this happening, and my unlockables now gone, I'm not even going to try and and play anymore, however tempting it is. It's a very good single player campaign from what I've played, but holy crap, the coding in this game is something I'd expect to see on a dollar store's shelf.

this game is a HUGEEE disappointment, crytek are going back instead of forward.
dx9, **** controls porting, no quicksave/quickload, no sandbox3, no 64bit. **** suit controls for dumb console kids who cant remeber more than 2 buttons.
way to go crytek u have ruined the best fps ever.

Apparantly the leaked beta had all those features too. Asides from everything in it being unstable but thats to be expected considering it was a January build, but really, why leave out the Sandbox3 or 64bit executables? I'm fairly sure the leaked beta even had DX11 support too. If Crytek's reasoning is "because the features are not finished yet" or "not to our standards yet", then why did they release the game? I really would not have minded to wait a couple more months if they needed to put the final touches on everything. I bet EA forced them to release it at the scheduled date, and fix all the problems afterwards.

BSOD are mostly memory problems

second you use windows 7 if i seen it right 64 bit with 3 gig? if im right win 7 uses already 2 gig to do all kind of stuff boot up and more so you have 1 gig left thats not the best to have.

If you want to run Windows 7 on your PC, here's what it takes:

1 gigahertz (GHz) or faster 32-bit (x86) or 64-bit (x64) processor

1 gigabyte (GB) RAM (32-bit) or 2 GB RAM (64-bit) i would see get some more memory our do a prime95 stress test n your memory mabey something isnt good

But it isn't my memory. I stress test my system all the time by drooling over the graphics on "Very High" in Crysis 1 all the time for hours. No problems, no overheating, no lack-of-memory, no lack-of-hard drive space. I also cannot have more than 4GB of ram because of a chip set limitation. I have the ASUS P5LD2 motherboard if you just Google the memory limitation, it's quite sad. :P I actually bought 4 GB of ram for my system but over 1.2GB of it was appropriated by the system/bios. No clue why.

Edit:

By stress testing my system/drooling over C1 graphics; I mean it's at about 7-9 fps

I know it's a little outdated, but it runs Crysis 2 and everything else fine, it's just the constant crashing of *ONLY* Crysis 2, that's the problem.

Edit: It also ran the multiplayer demo perfectly with no hiccups, just the occasional crash-to-desktop. So something has changed between the coding in the mp demo, and the retail version. Something bad.

Edit 2: the exact file name listed in the BSOD is "nvlddmkm.sys"

Bump and Update:

I have fixed all of Crysis 2's crashes. It was *my* fault. How embarrassing, eh?
My itty bitty 5% CPU overclock was causing it, once I set it to the default clock, and reduced the video card clock speeds down 10mhz each (just in-case), I have been playing the single player for over 3 hours now with no hiccups. Anyone else who ends up getting a BSOD or lots of crash-to-desktops, you might wanna try my solution.

Edit:

I had also just want to say, besides some of the bugs here and there, the Crysis 2 Single Player is quite good. I love it, it's addictive. All those people saying you don't get as much freedom as Crysis 1, well that's true, because that was a jungle, this time it's in a dense city, and I still find I have a crapload of freedom in this game. Good job Crytek! Hopefully you'll get those multiplayer problems fixed quickly. (I have not tried MP yet, I will try it tomorrow)

Guys, let me share my experience with C2. I won't talk about technical problems here, I haven't had much of it, and they are supposed to be fixed later on, but the game process in some ways made me cry. I just started the single. Why I can't kill an enemy with a car force kick???? Man, the dude even didn't turn around when the car bumped into him and moved him slightly aside. Unnatural, it's killing all the experience. I can perform a silent kill just behind the back of other guy and he didn't turn around either. But they can detect me from a hundred meters if I even lean up a wall. Buh! What a f@#k? It looks for me like I'm playing a ten years old cheap bad shooter. It's not a GOOD job, CRYTEK, it's a bad job. I wish I could look into eyes of the guy who was programming AI.

Vibratos: The AI is terrible. We know.

And yes, you can kill people with a force-kicked car. It happens in multiplayer from time to time on maps with cars. Lots of fun.

You can kill people with cars in MULTI player. Vibratos specified single player campaign in his post.

That's odd - I haven't had so much as *one* crash.

And I, if anything, have less hardware than you.

Intel Celeron DC E3400
AMD HD5450 PCIe 512MB GDDR3 (passive-cooling, therefore no fan)
3 GB DDR2-800
Windows 7 Ultimate x64 + SP1 + IE9 RTW

No crashes.

No problems outside of dying too much (what can I say; I'm woefully out of practice on single-player in shooters).

What am I doing right?

I actually ran over one CELL goon in SP (carjacked an Avalanche and ran him over with it) at the crash site.

He had the nerve to be in my parking space.

I stated how I fixed all of my crashes in my last post, but basically my 5% overclock on my CPU was too much for my computer to handle I guess, once I put it at the default clock speed, it worked perfectly.
