explain to me why you never kill Paarth...

Post » Wed Jun 04, 2014 3:36 am

I notice alot of people on these forums say they never kill Paarth,

why?

He is a Dragon that has slain numerous during the time of the Dragon Cult, and even in Skyrim he will say a time may arise when he may no longer be able to suppress his Predatory nature..

all in all, he has done far worse in his existence than most characters in the game (with the only exceptions being Alduin, Miraak)..

and before you say "its because he helped us", the Blades helped far more than Paarth (only real thing Paarth did was tell you about the existence of the time scar) and people seem to cast them aside imply because they don't like Delphines personality...

another funny thing is, these same people who say they never kill Paarth, have posted that they gladly kill characters like Nazeem who have done nothing wrong, and yet refuse to kill someone with such an evil past and who could actually be considered a potential threat at somepoint..

So can someone please explain to me why people seem so against killing him?

to me it seems like people thinking "ohh, talking Dragon, dats kool!" situation, so I would really like someone to clear this up for me

Because he has spent over a thousand years atoning for his sins. He has taught the graybeards the way of the voice. He wants peace between dragons and the sentient beings of Tamriel.

Its been over 1000 years since his atroceties, which were done as commanded by Alduin. No dragon dare cross Alduin, so they were more acting out of fear. Those he effected are long since dead, so are their kin and their kin's kin.

In his time since his crimes, he has repayed in full, at least in my eyes. If anything, I would rather kill the Gray Beards for being stuck-up hermits unwilling to help in the world's time of need. Further, the dreaon the Blades want him dead just irritates me. They weren't there when he was "evil", and he has not done anything in, once again, a thousand years. If and when the time comes he is unable to supress his primal nature, then the dragonborn will be there to stop him.

I'm against killing him for a couple reasons.

Reason #1. Because that [censored] Delphine told me to, no ifs ands or butts about it.

Reason #2. He is not the same dragon as he was before. he has changed. He does not kill now.

Reason #3. Unlike Delphine HE was actually helpful in defeating Alduin. And he didn't lay out some "Kill Delphine or I won't help you anymore." crap.

Reason #4. He is awesome and wise. I enjoy talking to him. I see no further reason to harm him then my friendly dragon friend who shows up when I call and burns my enemies.

1000 years is but a blink in the eyes of an immortal..

Sure to the Mortal races its a long time, but to a Dragon? to them its like thinking "Did I have eggs for breakfast yesterday.. or was it pancakes..."

the blades were far more helpful.. you only know the dragons Return is due to Alduin due to the wall in Sky Haven, they were the ones to help out the peace talks so you would be able to capture Odahviing..
actually, if it was not for the Blades and what we learnt from Esbern translating Alduins wall, we never would have even met Paarth..

seriously, the only thing Paarth helps with is telling you about time scar.. thats all he does..

Its still 1000 years. EVERYONE he ever effected directly, is dead. In terms of the world's development since his reign, technological stagnation due to magic has caused more problems then he.

Which is... stupidly important to plot. Without knowing that, Esburn telling us "Yes, that really is alduin." is even more meaningless. The time wound allowed us to learn the shout needed to defeat alduin.

1) it doesn't matter if they have been long dead, his Sins are still there, the peoples lives still wrecked.. If I went and robbed a gas station causing someone to lose their job, and than next year that gas station closes down, by your logic its fine i did it
it does not matter if the people affected are still around or not, as their lives were severely wrecked because of him.. saying "ohh they died awhile back" in no way Abolishes ones sins, or the fact he even states he may have a "relapse" someday

2) the only reason we even know of Dragonrend is because of the Blades, and Esberns reading of Alduins wall.. if it was not thanks to them, Alduin would not have been defeated, while Paarth said "sorry, can't help you.. well, you could go read an Elder Scroll over in the corner.. something might happen.. or not"..

If Paarth had been the one to fly you to the gate to Sovngarde you may have a point, but he did not, we had to capture Odaahviing to do so, of which the Blades were of more Assistance than Paarth..

Like I said, the Blades were far more helpful than Paarth was..

and I am still waiting for a response as to why so many of the people who say "i can't kill him" proudly gloat of the ways they killed nazeem, while Nazeem did nothing and Paarth has commited more Sins than half the bandit holes in Tamriel..

No, your anology is wrong. This is why we have statutes of limitations. If I robbed someone, then they die a week later, then 75 years pass and I turn myself in. It is highly unlikely I will face a trial, because at that point, it doesn't even matter to anyone. My going to jail gives no one justice.

If those Parth effected were still alive, then yes, you would have grounds to stand on for wanting to exact justice, but again, everyone is dead. The justice would be meaningless.

Again, that bit is stupidly important to the plot. He couldnt tell us the shout because he could not knoww it. Even if he did, the words need meaning and understanding to be useful in a shout, which no dragon could ever have. The dragonrend shout was of Man's creation. Parth didnt even know if using an elder scroll won the time wound would do anything, so he had to make an educated guess. Something Esburn could never have come up with. He didn't even know the time wound was there, since you are literally the only outsider allowed to the peak of the mountain in hundreds, if not thousands of years.

The chance to ask Parth never even came up. But even if it did, the other dragons might have seen him coming and attacked. Using Odaahving was actually a better move because other dragons probably didnt know or suspect him of betraying Alduin and helping the Dragonborn.

Opinions abound. You might see reason to kill Parth. I don't. I give second chances. If that chance is abused, then I will see the full power of the hammer of justice brought down on their face.

Hes annoying and a smug bastard. Same reason Id want to kill Delphine. Esburn was helpful, sure, but with how quick he was to turn his back to the one he pledged to serve makes me dislike him all the same.

1) You may have noticed that men was around after the Dragon War. The fact that Paarth is still around means nobody killed him. What right do YOU, the guy that may very well not have any connection to the people whose kin he slayed, have anything in judging him? The only "evidence" of his "sins" is a book written hundreds of years after the events by total strangers.

2) The Blades can tell you everything about Alduin or Odahviing, Paarth is the only reason you can defeat Alduin. The Time Wound is a knowledge he only has, even the Blades admitted that they needed him. Alduin was literally invincible until you Shouted him down.

Everyone knows who Alduin is, Paarth also would know of Odahviing, and it's a matter of luck Odahviing had been resurrected when you try to call him.

3) Nazeem actually bothers you all the time, Paarth teaches you how to Zen.

there is no Statute of Limitations on Murder nor Slavery

it does not matter if the people affected are alive or not.. when a person is killed the Killer still has to stand trial, there was a case in Alberta a few years back where a guy went in and confessed to the murder of a woman back in the mid 1960s.. just because the people around at the time are gone does not mean ones crimes should be ignored

you ignore the fact its only thanks to Esbern we know of Dragonrends existance, without witch we never would have even met Paarth.. once again, the Blades are the key that operned the door to victory..

its not an Opinion, its fact..

Paarth told you of the Time scar, thats it
the blades found Sky Haven, Translated Alduins wall, learnt that Dragonrend exists, helped during the Peace Summit to be able to allow the LDB a chance to capture Odahviing..

so, you would rather kill an Innocent man with a bit of an Attitude, but let someone who killed pillaged and Enslaved numerous people simply because its been a few eras (which as i said, to a Dragon is like trying to remember whast shirt your wore on the weekend)?

thats some twisted logic man..

not just a book, you have his own words

and of course no one killed him, he ran and hid on top of Snow Throat, if he hadn't he would likely have been killed by the Dragonguard

just because the evil he did happened long ago is no reason to say "dioesn't matter anymore" as you seem to be saying

the Blades were also aware of Odahviing, if you run back to Sky Haven and talk to Esbern he will tell you he was reading of known Dragons, and by shouting ones name he could summon him and capture him in Dragonsreach..

in fact its not just Paarth, Esbern and the greybeard dude will all inform you of Odahviing

Nazeem has an Attitude yes, but he really did nothing wrong other than having a bit of a superiority complex.. while Paarth has killed, destroyed and enslaved, but you don't think he deserves death because its been a few years?

you would rather kill the innocent Civilian over an old Terrorist who admits he may be a ticking time bomb?

We are talking about a dragon. I was illustrating a point, which you seem to fail to understand.

And you ignore the fact that wwithout Parth, we wouldn't even know of the Time Wound, meaning we couldnt get the shout, ultimatly meaning we COULD NOT DEFEAT ALDUIN.

That's a game man. The good of the dragon weighs more then the good of a bragger. Parth has done nothing wrong to me. Why would I kill somone who has done nothing wrong to me, or anyone I know, let alone ANYONE that is currently alive. Killing him helps no one, and hurts everyone. In thouse thousand years, Parth was helpful to Man.

Depending on the path you take, which Ive only taken the Parth path for information. I never had reason to ever go to the temple or talk to esburn outside of mandatory quest interaction.

Few years? A THOUSAND YEARS. Maybe a blink of an eye for Parth, but perception of time is meaningless. The actual passage of time and hoe the world has changed is far more important. Nazeem is irritating ME, and he is doing it NOW. Parth committed murder of OTHERS, and he did it A THOUSAND YEARS AGO. What he did is entirly irrlelvant to the current time. Nothing he did in the past matters any more. Des King Tut's actions during his time effect my needing to work tomorrow? Not in the slightest.

@ funnybunny- So by your logic, Germany still needs to pay for what it did 70+ years ago? The entire southeastern portion of the US still needs to pay for the whole slavery thing? To hell with redemption and forgiveness, eh?

So if you met an elder who committed a crime when he was in his 20s, learned of all the good things he did during that time to make up for his crime, would you still haul him off to jail?

Plus, as Echonite said, we're talking about a damned dragon. What jail facility in Skyrim do you think can hold a dragon? I don't think there's any law in anywhere that would hold Paarthunax responsible. If anything else, he's his own personal ward and prisoner.

Plus, let's not forget, it's been a thousand years! If I came across the diary of a man who lived in 1014 AD who wrote about how sorry he was for having done something horrible, I wouldn't hold it against him. Why? Because it's been a thousand years since it happened! Paarthunax's crimes happened THOUSANDS OF YEARS BEFORE THE GAME STARTED!!! Not even a thousand. THOUSANDS of years. That's like if Pericles of Athens appeared in Athens of 2014 AD and apologized for whatever wrong he had done. No one's going to give a crap about it, not now.

No. I said the only people who actually has the right to kill him decided not to. You may have noticed that there are at the very least 3 Nords that knew of the peak of the Throat of the World, the very same Nords that mastered the Voice that can even strip away a dragon's invincibility, they didn't kill Paarth, and then he told you about the Shout.

If the very people who were alive and aware of his deeds didn't kill him, why should you? What right do you have to override the decisions of the people past? Of the people to whom he inflicted his deeds? Even if you are a descendant of a person that Paarthy wronged, your ancestor didn't kill him, your ancestor's war heroes didn't kill him.

You are now nothing but an outsider, a person without any knowing of what he actually did, and how, and why. Do we have any canon whether the Dragonborn's ancestor never forgave Paarthy or not? Do we have any canon whether the descendants of That guy never forgave Paarthy or not? Do we even have any canon whether any of the Dragonborn's ancestors were related to the ancient Nords in any way? No.

And if even the Greybeards would tell you about Odahviing, it renders the Blades unimportant.

I was told by the Blades that they serve the Dragonborn. It isn't the other way around. I don't follow the Blades' justice, by whose mandate Paarthurnaax should be killed for retribution. In my mind, Paarthurnax has redeemed himself.

Reasons why I always spare him:

1) He is the only one to understand your true nature as Dovahkiin, and since most overlook that, one would think the Dovahkiin's nature is no different than other Dragons, hence why the Greybeards summon you and teach you the Way of the Voice, which would not exist if not for Paarthurnax.

2) If not for him, the Nirn we know of would be a very different place right now...

3) Killing him would not bring back those who died. What's done is done, and he has more than atoned for it. 1000+ years or however long its been is a damn long time to go against your nature, a damn long time to be alone. Like what HeroofKvatch99 said~

4) The Blades and Greybeards both helped the Dovahkiin reach his/her goal, but they were not without their flaws... The Greybeards were fearful of your power, keeping their knowledge of Dragonrend from you, out of fear for the safety of Paarthurnax. The Blades saw fit to use your power, wanting you to revive a long dead order of Dragon slayers, to give them purpose when that time has come and gone. They have the audacity to order you around, when it is they who should be listening to you, protecting you, serving you, not using you. Now, the Dovahkiin has no problem putting down Dragons who cause chaos and destruction, but he/she does it to protect those around him/her, not to revive and give glory to some damn dead order.

5) With Paarthurnax's help, I feel he may be able to help reign in some of the other Dragons out there and give them a new chance at life. Most acted as they did due to being under Alduins tyrannical rule, aka 'I revived you, you're my biatch'. And who knows, maybe they may provide useful when the Thalmor come knocking~

P.S: Depending on if you finished the Civil War before Season Unending, Paarthurnax will teach you the shout to summon Odahviing

He has tried his best to atone for his sins, he has helped stopped originally, an helps far more than the blades. It is actually stated, or at least hinted at, that Skyhaven temple was useless, and the greybeards (or at least Parthy) knew all along about it. If Argenir had not been Paranoid (for good reason admittedly) that you would abuse your powers, they could of told you everything. It also does not help that he was repulsed at the very existence of a human made, Anti-Dragon shout too such an extent that one of the other Greybeards had to remind him of his duty to the Dragon born. He has literally sat upon the Throat of the world helping teach those who are deserving, the way of the voice for an incredibly long time. In your first battle against Alduin, after a while he will actually help you out and fight Alduin alongside you.

The blades? nothing, Delphine constantly questions you and your actions, instead of just asking to show a shout, what does delphine ask? for you to kill a dragon.....who does she send, alone, on a dangerous, incredibly stupid, nonsensical plan into the Thalmor headquarters? yeah, YOU. She then sends, again you alone, to help esbern. Then you open Skyhaven temple, something only YOU can do, for them. and every step of the way orders you around like a servant and then the moment she belives PArthy is now a non-asset, she orders you to kill him, a very Thalmor thing to do. All of this under the pretense you they serve YOU.

The Greybeards never say they serve you, just that they train you and after that it seems like the connection is generally done unless the DB wants to be a greybeard. They also never make you do things other than for you training, and even then, it is all of one thing, and that is a traditional thing. Parthy himself never orders you or anything, the Blades/Akaviri dragonslayers have attacked and slain them to near extinction and yet holds no ill will of them(no Alduin = No Restoration). The blades order you around constantly and use you, and then throw you away the moment they have no use for you.

Not really. It really depends on your game. The Blades, in my games, are about as useful as a bicycle for fish.

How many people claim to be dragonborn? Yet you have to go kill a dragon to prove you are before the Blades will talk to you. They interfere with you before you even know they exist and you are supposed to go do what they want.

What peace talks? I settle the civil war before I even talk to the Blades. *Paarth* tells me about Odavhiing.

The Blades actually interfere with you learning about being dragonborn and meeting Paarth. Delphine takes the Horn you are supposed to return to the Greybeards. If you can't return the Horn, you can't continue with the Greybeards. Her actions also put your life in danger by making you go investigate the Thalmor to find out they know nothing about the dragons. Again, Paarth tells me about the dragons.

Paarth also helps you increase your power; you can deal more damage, heal faster, or stagger your opponents more, depending on what you decide to meditate on. Esbern will make you kill a dragon and fetch him a bone and scale to make you a potion that will let you take 25% less melee damage from dragons. I like what Paarth can do more than Esbern.

If the Blades are such high and mighty dragonfighters, why did they work for Tiber Septim? You know, the Dragonborn who made a pact with the dragons; he would protect them if they would serve him? He had to have met Paarth. Why didn't the Blades get all uppity with Talos? They didn't even obey his orders about the dragons; they still hunted them. The mighty dragon-hunter Blades never actually help you fight a dragon after you jump through their hoop the first time. I've gotten more help from Farkas and Vilkas in fighting a dragon than I ever did from the Blades.

Paarth saw Alduin overstepping his place long ago, and for whatever reason, aided Men by teaching the Voice. If he hadn't, Alduin would have won and defeated the first rebellion. Everyone would be serving the Dragons and dragonpriests.

Blades interfering and insisting you do what they want or they won't even talk to you again, or Paarth who helps you without asking you to do anything, increases your powers/teaches you, and appreciates a chance to talk with you?

Yeah, I don't kill Paarth in 99.999% of my games. I did it once, just like I did the Stormcloak side of things once. Never again.
