Explorer limit ruins the game

Post » Sun Feb 14, 2016 5:48 pm

Wow, like many of the others on this thread, I, whom apparently had a long forgotten account for these forums, had to go dig it up and recover my password so I could come here and post, because this issue was simply too frustrating to ignore.

The awesome level of frustration this change inspires seems more suited to verse, but since I am (fortunately) not a poet, I guess I should instead just tell you a story.

There I was, 200 dwellers, 97% happiness, innumerable rare items (yet, somehow, still not a single legendary recovered from the wasteland....). I had 86 dwellers in the wasteland, a number soon to be much higher as I had 30 more slated to reach max SPECIAL within the next couple days, ready to send out exploring on a 5-6 day long rotation with the rest. My vault was running at near maximum efficiency, needing fewer than 100 dwellers to keep operating, despite my massive appetite for stimpacks to take on wasteland expeditions. By this point in the game, the only thing still worth doing at this stage in the game, and the only thing that kept me playing, was sending more and more dwellers into the wasteland, collecting more and better outfits in the hopes of one day landing some legendary gear. With 80+ dwellers in the wasteland, there was some minor performance difficulties experienced scrolling through eaach of them to track their progress and tell them when to return... but it was a sacrifice for the greater good! I was prepared to go all the way, 110+ dwellers of performance-draining explorational goodness, to meet my goal.

I had just sent about 20 more out again on a fresh run the night before when I booted up my game to find... an update! I started by checking my dwellers in the wasteland... revived a couple that had died and told them to return home, turned back a few more with 0 stim packs remaining... wait, what's this? a legendary armor? 4 legendary weapons? Was it perhaps a bug all this time that was preventing me from getting legendary items, and bethesda had finally fixed it, allowing me to collect? Huzzah! Perhaps the bethesda folsk were competent after all! Although this left some questions about why the bug was there to begin with.... Now just to collect a few dwellers and send them back out again... but no.

I couldn't send them out! I now had 75 dwellers in the wasteland and 11 wandering around uselessly on coffee breaks, and couldn't do anything about it. How many did I need to bring back in before I could send more out again? 1? 26? Throughout the day I kept collecting returned dwellers a few at a time as they trickled back... It was when I hit 49 in the wasteland and still couldn't send any out that I snapped. This is rediculous! What's this new maximum number, and why is it so low?

I checked the forum and my heart sank. TEN!? The maximum dwellers in the wasteland is TEN!? WHAT!? How could anyone think this was a good idea!? What am I supposed to do with these LITERAL HUNDRED DWELLERS all specced out for exploration, now with nothing to do? and more importantly, what was even the point of playing the game now? No more meaningful exploration means no more game. That's it. I'm done.

RIP Fallout Shelter, you were fun while you lasted.

I used to get legendary items - no more. Was this intentional? If so this undermines the game much more than the 25 dweller limit which I can live with. Seems like the only way to get a legendary is about 1-5% of the time when you open a lunchbox which makes it impossible to 'collect them all' in a single game because eventually many of the tasks are impossible (level up x dwellers etc). Buying lunchboxes to get legendary is simply dumb because the odds are way too low and the bought items are not transferrable to new games.

If they really wanted to increase the number of lunchboxes sold and prolong user engagement they would:

1) Re-enable legendary finds in the wasteland;
2) Guarantee a certain number of legendary items when you cough up cash;
3) Automatically share all purchased legendary items with new vaults;

Because someone in this thread argued so. I use old Iphone 5s (1MB) and I have no performance problem to handle 100 explorers in my vault.

So I guess that Android phone may have some performance problem due to too many explorers. But I have not seen any news of performance improvement of FOS on Android yet.

1) I concur. legendary should be re-enabled even at low drop rate.

2) Introduce premium lunchbox at price $5-10 a pop. It will yield guranteed legendary.

3) No, they should not be shared. It will make new vault too easy. Only unopened premium lunchbox and collection list will be shared among vaults.

175 dwellers , 40 in wasteland with about 50 training to full 10s SPECIAL. 100% happiness. Playing everyday from day 1 on android (at the begining I even used to wake up in the middle of night for a couple of minutes to check on my vault)

Abadoning the game now. It is ruined.

Everything good must come to an end...

I couldn't disagree more. That's pay to win, so far they managed to stay away from this plague. Why not introduce a super-duper-premium-lunchbox for $150 with 120 legendary items guaranteed? Or one for $350 that gives you instantly 200 dwellers with max special and legednary weapons? There must be a sense of balance between reward by effort and reward by payment, even in a free to play game. That's the thrill of a lunchbox, the randomness, the lottery. If I know it has a guaranteed legendary every time I open one, part of the magic vanishes and I lose interest fast.

As for the limit of explorers, that is indeed a very bad decision that ruins my end game motivation. So, yeah, game over for me.

Just got the objective of sending 26 dwellers to the wasteland. Shall I quit the game or act like an idiot to repeat the same send/call action 26 times?

There used to be an objective of sending 29 dwellers, I sent them altogether and 23 of them got legendary in 4 min. Don't think this will work again if sending one by one.

If need to pay with real money, I would like to pay a premium upfront. And limits the expenditure.

I have heard that even 1000 boxes cannot get all the legendary, this is too much money for a game.

There is no "win" in this game. FOS is strictly single user game. So (premium) lunchbox is not pay-to-win. It just saves time and efforts of players.

Premium lunchbox just removes gambling factor from normal lunchbox. Usually, you have to buy and open 5-10 normal Lunchbox to get one legendary weapon any way. I think that it is excellent deal that you get one guaranteed legendary with less than 1 hour labor at minimum wage.

I am willing to pay money to buy legendary weapon which saves time and efforts, But I hate to do gambling on it.

The lunchbox has its gambling factor. You have to draw to get the item.

To remove the gambling factor, the items should be sold directly. Like $5 for a Fatman etc.

Let's keep on topic guys, this isn't about lunchboxes. It's about the entire game being completely pointless now that you can only have 10 dwellers exploring the wasteland at a time.

It's 25 explorers, but an all other accounts your post is 100% accurate. Loved the game, stopped playing today since the limit obviously is not getting removed anytime soon. Also, the hardcoe mode without tweaks to defender AI and healing and overlay issues is just a joke. Basicly this patch is failing on all fronts.

My explorers can go by 4 days or more, returning in 2 days makes it 6 days.

I was sending 80+ explorers and going to send 100+ before the update, so that I can check back one or two hrs for collection.

Limit to 25 explorers makes me waiting rather than playing, as there is not other things to do.

It means my vault will fade away.

Why did I [censored]in install the new update? I should have waited to see what is changed. Bethesda are you kidding me, why destroy the game with such a controversial nerf? Did they explain the reason for this change?

still ruined as of version 1.2.1. 1.2.1 has a 25 dweller in the wasteland exploration limit. This is still utterly disappointing as there is nothing to do later in the game but explore. Please remove the limit as it makes no sense. What is there some Mao-Stalin forcing the overseer not to send more people out? This goes against the very concept of overseer. Please remove the horrible wasteland dweller limit.

Basically its more or less obvious the people creating this game either dont play it or play with a debug apk that grants limitless resources. Anyone playing this game would find the time it takes to get legendary items and dwellers by naturally collecting lunchboxes from quests / achievements is ludicrous. I can also promise you this - even if you were to open 1000 lunchboxes you are very unlikely to get a complete set of cards / dwellers /weapons.

I dont think the creators of this game test it or play it for fun.

I've now gotten legendary items and a legendary dweller (welcome Eulogy Jones VIII) from lunch boxes earned thru objectives after the newest patch.

I agree the explorer limit is bs, especially with a 'send 29 (or more) dwellers to the wasteland' objective still out there.

It should scale based on how many explorers you have out already

or just remove the cap and tell people to limit their explorers if they don't like crashes.

Another Idea: Cancel objectives by paying caps. 50k or 100k to cancel.

It would give people who are maxxed on caps something to spend on

and let you skip thru to lunchbox objectives faster, thus allowing for

more chances for legendary items/dwellers.

It took me over 2500 lunchboxes to get all the dwellers.

Back in the v1.0 era I built a lunchbox farm for the training objectives. (Bite me Elder Lyons)

It took doing the timing/force quit glitch before I got the last 2 legendary weapons. (Lead Belcher and Destabilizer)

Since there was (is) no way of getting them thru caps payouts or thru a microtransaction store

I don't feel bad for exploiting the glitches.

And my OCD is satisfied.

Now if I can just find a Ghost and a Skeleton costume I could finally sleep again.

This is another option. A reasonable chance to find legendary items/dwellers is necessary. Removing the legendary drop chance was a major screw up.

25 is still not enough, not even close. 50 might be getting there. 80-100 would be reasonable.

No, it would be not. Why 80-100 would be ok if we had something better which is no limit? It would still ruin the end game.

If you have cheap android phone and you have problems just dont send as many as we would. Like if you have cheaper PC you play on low graphic settings.

I'm also joining in on the whole 'explorer limit ruins the game', I had around 50 dwellers exploring the wastes before the update and I was planning to send out more after training.

Now that plan is ruined and I'm stuck checking in on the game once or twice a day just to see if the limit is removed and collect the little rare items that the explorers do find (which isn't a single legendary since starting the vault).

I'm playing the game on android and it has only crashed ONCE pre-update, and that happened because I built two rooms too fast (I think?), and guess what, it has crashed more than that after the 1.2 update. Also adding that awful collect bug.

Although the game did run slower when I had around 50 explorers out, it wasn't a problem and it never crashed because of it.

Thanks to this game I was thinking about pre-purchasing Fallout 4 on steam but now... haha, nope, the deal is off, I'm gonna pirate it or wait for a big discount (Yeah, sue me).

TL;DR? REMOVE THE LIMIT ALREADY!

This. In PC world this nerf would be equal to Rockstar forcing everyone to play GTA V with minimum settings because some people play the game on a 200 dollar laptop from walmart. How the developers don't see the stupinity in this logic is beyond me. I guess a very large number of players is paying the prize of even larger number of players owning low performance devices. And the fact internet has completely ruined every meaningfull way to relay feedback to developers. We keep seeing these forums / facebook pages / development sites moderated by people clearly getting paid minimum wage if that, who have just barely more say in the development than beta testers, that bottom feeding scum of the gaming industry.
