Exploring the mundane in Skyrim

Post » Sat May 28, 2011 5:25 am

So the GI article said that the PC could engage in framing, mining, woodcutting, and cooking. (It also said they added weapons forgery, but that's not mundane. :))

Is this a feature others are looking forward to exploring? I'm thinking it could be a cool addition, a little break from questing does much for immersion, IMO.

I wondering how they'll be implemented mini games or maybe mini quests? How will the character benefit? XP, skill, money?

Any opinions or speculations?

i'm guessing money and xp, kind of like fable, but you could also use what you made perhaps?

Well I think having these forms of work available will definitely increase the immersion and overall feeling of being in Skyrim. What I will say is that these activities definitely need to be more in-depth and fulfilling than what we saw with "jobs" in Fable II and III. I don't want just a simple button masher, there should be a level of intellect and skill involved with these tasks. The better one is at these tasks, the better they are at making [insert item]. Maybe it could lead to one even opening their own business, but that may be a bit of a stretch. Who knows though.

i think its an excellent move.

however.. what i dont want is seperate mini games for them..

ie woodcutting should be simply hacking at a tree with your axe as you would hack a monster.

continuity is key.

Woodcutting made me think of that minigame in fable 2.

Minigame... nooooo :(

Full real-time animations & physics for all these mundane acitivities. No quests, no mini-games. Just "normal". Of course, I wouldn't a few quests related to the "jobs/chores".

I'm just looking at the article and it does say farming.

Who knows what will really make to the final product.

I was thinking a bit more on how it could be implemented. mercantile / speechcraft could be a great modifier for pay. Maybe these jobs have certain skill some benefits for strength. I.E. cutting wood has some minor benefit to building strength.

Although I do not want button mashing mini games, unless these activities are mini quests, how would they be implemented?

A mini game can be good or horrible, but is going out to a remote region to cut a different kind of wood different than your typical "fetch" quest? If that is the case, wouldn't it be just another quest and not really a break from the typical quest format?

There will be farming, mining, woodcutting, and cooking, as far as the GI magazine is concerned.

So farming is in too? YAY! :celebration:

I loved doing the mundane in Risen even if it was very simply done.
