Extending the usefulness of lower grade armor!

Post » Fri Apr 08, 2011 12:20 am

One of the things I liked about oblivion alot was the textures of the lower quality armors. I liked putting my Orc knight in steel or iron armor and fighting like that. However in order to compete I had to upgrade to deadric which felt alot less special due to leveling armor.

So I propose this system.

Not only let us become proficient with light and heavy armor but let us get better with certain armor sets. So let me take fur armor and become more proficient with fur armor so that it extends it's usefulness. Still make it weaker than better quality armors but let a very proficient iron armor be 1 or 2 steps better than a non-proficient steel armor. This will let me keep the look I want for my character and extend it's usefullness.

Also only make 3 complete sets of deadric armor in the game :)

I think this is an excellent idea, but it's pretty likely that armour skills have either been removed or simplified. Perks might save us.

The general armies of tamriel have to get by with the lesser quality armors, so they can never become useless or something like that. Upping the fighting skills of the lesser bandits and such will keep them a threat in the later game without them being hard to kill in their basic armor, and that would be a good solution. Armor in general should have a large list of statistics that govern their interaction with damage and the player, stats like weight, enchantability, durability, and so on.

About daedric; Arena had none, Daggerfall had plenty, Morrowind had almost none, Oblivion had it everywhere. I think the answer on daedric needs to be outside of those solutions. You should only get the daedric armor from the daedric princes giving it to your for your service.

that's an awesome idea, kinda like a quest to gain each piece. I hope they leave that specific to deadric armor and don't do anything special for light armor. I think it would be cool to find glass armor more easily while deadric armor would require a quest but overall would offer more protection.

I'm all for this system to be implemented but I'll probably be using the top armor anyhow. Also, I'll just mod in my own armor anyhow to replace the best armor type.

I made a mod that made "special" armors very rare. It improved steel plate (historically only the very wealthy could afford it) and that was the standard upper level armor, but it was still uncommon. Then I made models and skinned historical weapons and distributed them. Finally, I reworked all of the loot and equipment tables. What I had in the end was a few people in plate, a very few in special armor, lots of chain and leather. The NPCs were armed with appropriate historical weapons.

Boring to many, but I like it that way.

I'd also like several different armors that have the same stats but look different

All armor should have pros AND cons (not only weight). I want it to serve a purpose for me to walk around in fur or leather, rather than being "played into choosing glass". Would be many natural weaknesses to some of the elements, that fits right in.

imo- stuff should remain lore correct

ebony and glass should be very rare and only found on high nobility (including vampire nobles). whilst there should only be 3 full sets of daedric- with each piece being sepperated and in a different place. -why 3? because it was too hard to get in morrowind, but it should be insaneley rare+ every armour should have 3 variations (look at morowinds bonemold

this could be contraproducent. Imagine you dislike your actual armor but you are very proficient with it, then you find a better one, but as you are not proficient with it you get a worse armor untill you train it enough. The stalker clear sky weapon customzation system did you something similar and is not very enjoyable.

If you've maxed out your armor then your just gonna have to jump up to the next one if you want it. Otherwise you would probably be ok hanging with your high proficiency armor. Also the whole point of this is to use armor that you like, so you probably wouldn't have stuck with that armor anyways. It would take awhile to level up so it's really only something you would do if you wanted to do it.
