Extent of SMART

Post » Mon Dec 13, 2010 6:47 am

Been stalking this fourm and all the videos associated with Brink for a while now but cannot find a solid answer to this question so thought i'd join in on the fourm and see what you guys think. What are your opinions on the freedom we will have with SMART? Do you think we will be able to freely roam or will there be 'invisible walls' restricting the movement? I'm possibly thinking the developers will have designed the levels in such a way that certain areas may be too high/far to access.

Sorry if this has been answered but I havent seen it.

Thanks guys

I think since there is no 'jump' button that we will only be able to get to places that they intended for us to get to.

Having moderate knowledge of game design, it will be subject to something I like to refer to as "situationalism". There most likely won't be any invisible walls, just concave ceilings, crates to far jutting to climb on to, water that you of course can't swim in etc.

I think there will be some invisible "walls" i noticed in one video a little red rope fence that is close to the water that i'm pretty sure can't be vaulted. I'll look for the vid.

Wait, What? Last I heard there is a jump button, how else are players supposed to jump?

Actually there is a jump button. Instead of using SMART you can just sprint and jump or just plain JUMP.

Yeah think i'd agree with you there althought there is water on the other side so there isnt really a need to vault it

Most likely because they devs didn't want to animate a drowning sequence.

I think the feeling that SD is using with SMART is that if you can logically get to a place (Water excluded because... of a good reason) and are the appropriate body type you should be able to get to a place.

I feel like there won't be MANY invisible walls (watery areas being the exception) walls just high enough surfaces that cannot be reached by someone who is not Spider-Man.

There is a jump button....

Smart is the lazy way of doing parkour on Brink. You can learn to do it manually and as Wedgewood says it it can "give you the edge in combat."

There is a jump button, all SMART button actions can be done with the jump and crouch buttons and you can only do certain things mannually, I think the wall hop is an example but not positive

Mastering the parkour to the point where it is second nature is going to be a high priority for me so I can focus on my shooting.

It's been said that they, the developers hate invisible wall because they make no sense so they will not be in the game, but there will be inaccessible areas, most likely places that are just to high to get too
and that red rope, it makes sense that you should be able to get over it, despite that you really have no need, maybe to satisfy your desire to explore

There's a jump button. If you watch the videos on SMART on the site, they say there is.

I remember that devs said something like this: "You can use both SMART or Jump+other buttons, if you actualy learn to use the other method, you could profit from it slightly more than a SMART user"

And I read an interview where they said the Light's wallhop can't be done with just the SMART button, you also have to use the.... you guessed it! JUMP BUTTON!

I think this thread has debunked the "no jump button" guy enough now.

I'm pretty sure there will be restrictions on jumping into water, but beyond that, anywhere that looks like you might be able to reach, I'm fairly confident someone will find a way to get to.
