Exterior Home Vs Interior Home? Your preference

Post » Mon May 02, 2011 2:16 am

I'm thinking about releasing a mod (ref: http://www.gamesas.com/index.php?/topic/1104988-my-mod-feedback-welcome/ )

But I want to see what the current demand is like round here. I mean, has anyone actually given much thought to exterior homes and if they prefer them to interiors?

I personally cannot stand interior homes as 1) the loading times ruin my RPG'ing, 2) I can't look outside windows, 3) I can't interact with the outside world whatsoever and 4) I can't even hear the weather from an interior cell.

There seem to be more mods on regular interior homes than exterior, which is a shame. Anyway, to get a feel for what an exterior home looks like (none seem to exist in vanilla oblivion) check some of my screenshots out BEFORE you vote on this poll. My stills are here: http://viewmorepics.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=viewImage&friendID=543031100&albumID=12035&imageID=52178

I don't know how many people have actually experienced an exterior home, but, until you have (or at the very least had a look at what they look like) please don't vote on this one. Otherwise, vote/comment away!

Never experienced one, as I play vanilla (360), but I LOVE the exterior styles in your gallery! Exterior gets my vote all the way. So much more open and interesting than the closed-off interiors of vanilla. I can almost feel the breeze coming through the windows in some of those pics.

Thank you for the kind comment :)

I spent quite a while making that home and had to do several other things, like pathgriding just to make sure other NPC's could enter (if I allowed them too lol, as I can lock the door, which was another area I spent aaaaaages on scripting).

I've tied in this exterior hut with a quest (I've still some scripting to finish on the quest to clear up some bugs) so hopefully it will end up being a good, solid mod. Hopefully the screenshots give a clear picture as to what it feels like.

I voted and so did 2 others. 3 votes is not enough! Please can some others seriously consider this question?

It's actually quite important as I might be releasing several exterior houses in different locations in the future.

I voted exterior, even though all my house mods are currently interior. I just like the look and feel of the exterior ones (from the screen shots I've seen). I just worry about lag when approaching an exterior house (maybe there is none, I dont know ) and I dont want it to rain inside. I understand, or at least think I do, that ithe only way to stop it from raining inside is to make it so that it cant rain at all when your in the house. I could live with that, even though it'd be cool to see a lighting storm out of your window.

Yeah the weather issue is a big one. Currently, I have not seen a workaround (and I haven't been able to script it either). I treat the rain like a leak in the roof and it's one thing I can overlook as the alternative, interior homes, is poor by comparison.

The lag issue is kept to a minimum because I deliberately made the hut quite basic. It is just the right size to be snug and has just the right amount of items (a bed, fireplace, table for instance) to feel like a home. If I overloaded the hut with various items, lag could become an issue. Placing several exterior homes together would also be an issue which is why they are best left as singular items spread far apart. If I made a second home, I'd make it many miles away lol. Anyway, by keeping homes neat and basic, lag is not a real issue from my experience. Flames from the fire CAN sometimes be a little laggy, but usually on lower end PC's. That's one reason I made it so you can turn OFF the fire by clicking a switch next to the fireplace. That, and for RPG'ing purposes :)

I voted interior because of the rain problem... too much of a nuisance to me.

I voted exterior. It's very different than vanilla and feels very fresh.

As far as the rain I've seen a couple solutions. The best one I think you could go with is just to have a scripted effect on your house that changes the model to one that has rain pouring on the outside, and disables the rain shader while your in the house.

http://www.gamesas.com/index.php?/topic/1070857-relzwipz-reneers-rain-mod/page__hl__rain that does it another way. I'm still looking for the place where I read how to do it the way I was talking about.

Honestly, until I spotted your thread a few threads up about even knowing the difference I'd never heard the term. And until I went and looked at the screens, I was thinking something more along the lines of a "permanent, well-developed campsite" sort of thing.

But with a grasp of the concept firmly in mind now...

I personally cannot stand interior homes as 1) the loading times ruin my RPG'ing,

Non-issue to me. RAID for the win.

2) I can't look outside windows,

Again, not much concern to me either way, although my next answer has some bearing as well:

3) I can't interact with the outside world whatsoever

First one I've got any significant viewpoint on, but mine's sort of the exact opposite: in my view, the outside world being outside and restricted TO the outside is pretty much the entire point. The more "blocked from what I'm up to" the outside is, the better.

and 4) I can't even hear the weather from an interior cell.

And again, not much issue to me.

Ultimately, I find the concept interesting, but "strictly for my own purposes" I still prefer the conventional interior type. That's not to be taken as any intent to discourage, mind you- I just prefer my nice isolated interiors. :)

In a real home you can open the door and look right oustide and turn back and see inside. You can also look outside and see the real world from within. Exterior homes are better than interiors for their realism alone.

You already have a topic on your mod, please don't keep making them.
