Extremely new to Mods, how does it work?

Post » Sun Jul 28, 2013 1:10 pm

Alright... I got the NVSE, and the FOMM, and i tried getting a relatively SIMPLE mod, this one:

http://newvegas.nexusmods.com/mods/51011/?tab=1&navtag=%2Fajax%2Fmoddescription%2F%3Fid%3D51011%26preview%3D&pUp=1

However, i do not know HOW to get it up and runnin.

Ok, so first off. i got the NVSE, but idk if it is supposed to be open, or how to use it, and everytime i open FOMM, it is telling me i dont have any mods downloaded or ready to install. and even after getting this mod to go to FOMM, which it takes me to FOMM manager and everything, i have no idea what i am doing. someone help me out, i am so new to mods and how it all works, i am REALLY having a migraine here.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DBPYLXt3A_Y is what I used to start off with when I began modding. It should lead to the right path, once you get the hang of it, it's a walk in the park.

The first thing you should do is go to the YouTube link below -

http://www.youtube.com/user/GophersVids?feature=watch

ETA - (or use the tutorial linked above)

and watch modding tutorials for Fallout New Vegas (they're right below the Skyrim modding tutorials on the page I linked). The first video in my link will walk you right through the installation of NVSE, and all of them will give you a really good overview of how to make mods work.

Watch those, and if you have any questions, come back here and ask them. It looks daunting at first, but you should get the hang of it pretty quickly.

The principles are the same between the two versions of the game, so it should be fine for you. The only thing you'll need to keep in mind is that some mods will require some or all of the DLCs (and that's all the Ultimate Edition is, the base game patched to the latest version and bundled with the DLCs) , so you won't be able to use them. But the mod authors should note this on their Nexus pages if it applies.

First of all, if you have Steam installed in your Program Files folder move it. The UAC (User Account Control) security feature in any Windows OS after XP can cause problems with mods. Moving Steam is very easy, just copy/paste the Steam.exe file and your SteamApps folder to where you want it to be, delete the old folder, then run the Steam.exe file. It will logon on to the servers and download everything else you'll need. You may have to select "Reinstall" in the Library for your games, but that only updates the registry to the new location. You don't actually need to reinstall all the files. Once you have it set up in a good location, unarchive NVSE and copy the files over to your New Vegas folder, the same one where your FalloutNV.exe is found. You don't need to include the .txt files or the "Src" folder, that one's just for anyone one who wants to tinker with the source code. Once you have it in the New Vegas folder, you will need to use the "nvse_loader.exe" file in order to boot your game, otherwise NVSE won't work. You can create a shortcut of that file and put it where ever you want it, then change the icon and rename it so that it looks exactly like the default launcher for the game.

Better to create a folder like C:\Games and move Steam to there.
