I'm EXTREMELY scared of giant spiders

Post » Sun Dec 11, 2011 8:31 pm

Well if you were me playing yesterday you would die of heart attack :P

I was on a road and then I saw a Dragon shadow passing over me, I went into hiding and wait the dragon go away, suddenly I hear lydia say something, when I turn around i face a giant spider right on my side preparing to attack me  :flame:

Be watchfull, they use to appear from nowhere, when you less expect them :woot:

Okay, guys, I made it. Thanks to my dog and flame atronach :D. First, I got close to him so it jumped on me then quickly runned away and left it to my followers. Anyway, I wouldn't made it by killing him closely with axe/blade, because of spiders animations :l.

A constructive arachnophobic topic!

Thank you for not railing that the game shouldn't have spiders or that it's insensitive to arachnophobes.

I view a disabling phobia as something like an allergy. I know two people who are peanut allergic. One of them to the level of "If I accidentally ingest microscopic amounts of peanut oil used in cooking, I will most likely die". Even that guy doesn't think that cooking with peanut oil should be disallowed. He just makes very sure to find out whether a place uses it, and doesn't go there if so. Or if he does for social reasons, he finds out if they have anything that's definitely safe and has that.

What I'm saying is, fear of a virtual spider never killed anyone. You can call it playing on a tired trope to have giant spiders in a fantasy adventure RPG setting, but I call it good fun and setting appropriate. Removing them for arachnophobes (from the game as a whole, obviously modding them out would be great since it's optional - and I bring this up because it's been asked elsewhere) would be like asking a bakery to change their recipes because they use peanut oil. A real problem in both cases, but a problem that should be addressed by the afflicted individual by dealing with it as best they can by research and avoidance, or in the case of plucky arachnophobes, taking out your frustrations on virtual targets.

By the way, I also know a psychiatrist who thinks killing the object of your phobia virtually is a great therapy tool.

Okay tips

1) it's a game, the spiders are not real, they can't really hurt you
2) IRL, you use a glass and a peice of card to dispose of spiders, in Skyrim, you use a sword, axe mace or bow and arrows
3) in Skyrim, there are bigger, meaner things to worry about than spiders... Dragons prehaps?

You must raise your arms to the heavens, clench your butt cheeks, summon the forces of the nine and transform the nasty into a fluffy bunny!

But then again how you gunna kill a fluffy bunny and not feel bad? You need that poison he has to kill the nasty dragons :)

Fire is always the best way to kill a spider. In game and out. Just torch it with both hands and you won't be able to see it

Be glad they're not Giant Portia spiders =) Those things are neat. And smart. A picture of them would give you nightmares if you're scared of spiders.

If you mean the first big spider you encouter in the golden claw quest, then you don't have to encounter the spider. You can stay on a safe distance and just keep hitting him with your bow. The spider is simply to big to move outside the room where you first encounter this monster. I did just that, hitting the spider with my bow (well, the arrows of my bow) while he was just moving left and right or was occasionally trying to poison me with his venom.

I play on master so I can't get close to him anyway or he'll 1-shot me. Just hide behind the opening you entered his lair through, dodge his poison attacks and hit him with arrows. If you crank the difficulty down to easiest and have a companion with you then you shouldn't have to get anywhere near him.

Aren't they? I just looked em up, and they don't scare me as much as other spiders, as with the ones in the game, because two of their eyes are vastly larger than the rest. It makes them look way more...familiar? And a little cute. If they weren't spiders maybe.

I'm almost at the end of the cave and finally I see... webs. And GIANT spider who jumps down on me... MAN. How can I kill him without getting close to him (not even getting close to let him jump on me)

I don't want to use any mods.

Stop trying to run away. You can dodge it's attacks right in front of it's face... it's much easier than trying to keep distance.
