Eyes. My character's backstory

Post » Tue Dec 06, 2011 4:38 am

I know some people like to create a character with a backstory in order to better immerse themselves in the game, so I decided to try it out as well and thought I'd share a small portion of the backstory with you guys just to get your opinion on it. It's kind of long and not completely finished so I'll just post a bit of it. I'm not an expert on the lore of the Elder Scrolls universe, but I have played through most of the games and learned quite a bit from those alone. So if my story conflicts with some of the lore, let me know lol. This is just part of it, but to give you an understanding, it details his young life. In which he leaves his home, moves to Skyrim, gets confronted by a past enemy, is forced back to his homeland, and then gets involved in some "things" and heads to Skyrim once again with certain motives in mind only to get captured at the border by a group of Imperials.. And that's where the game begins. Anyways, just check it out and let me know what you think of it. Mainly point out problems with the backstory though so I can fix them.

Criminal background: Arrested for a series of thefts, the most notorious being a rare book titled "Ways of the Black Scale Fist" which details some of the deadliest techniques in martial arts. Escaped a high profile Imperial dungeon, only to be caught two months later while attempting to steal a Mages Guild artifact. More recently, he was a suspect in a brutal fight that resulted in another Argonian being killed. While no evidence has been found to suggest Eyes was involved, the Imperial Order believes strongly in their assumption and has since kept him under close surveillance.

Personal background: Not much was known about Eyes' life outside of his criminal activities, until a personal journal he kept of his travels was confiscated by the Imperial Order. Details later emerged about his childhood, what made him turn to a life of crime, as well as how he performed some of his most daring thefts. At a young age, Eyes was an outsider. He was born a Shadowscale, who at birth, are destined to serve the dark lord, Sithis. As a teen, he questioned his destiny often, but his brothers and sisters assured him that his future as an instrument of evil would be filled with greatness and honor. A few years passed and Eyes had finally made his decision. Refusing to kill in the name of someone other than himself, he rejected the ways of the Shadow. In fear of being hunted down and killed by his fellow Shadowscales, he fled to the mountains of Skyrim. A harsh wilderness. A frozen land. A place he would surely be safe. Safety came with its own problems though. Struggling to survive in the harsh mountains above Windhelm, he resorted to begging outside of the city's gates. It wasn't long before the guards took notice, and in exchange for their entertainment, he was entitled to a meager meal each day, courtesy of the Jarl. The entertainment being constant verbal and physical abuse.

Four months after residing in Windhelm, he overheard one of the guards harassing a Dark Elf in the city's tavern. Apparently, the citizen was from Riften, a city located in the south eastern reaches of Skyrim. The guard was furious, sure that the man had stolen his coin purse. No proof was found, but the Dark Elf was escorted out of the city shortly after, where he looked down upon Eyes, beaten and starving. "Do you want to live under these Imperial scum forever, boy?" The Dark Elf said while tossing a purse into his lap. The Dunmer laughed while jumping onto his horse. "Thank you, sir!" Eyes said as he counted out his newly acquired gold. "Don't thank me, you pitiful fool. That guard is the one you should be thanking. Only an Imperial would hang his coins from his armor for all to see. Such arrogance deserves to be exploited." And with that, the Dark Elf rode off, disappearing in the night. Eyes gazed at the gold sprawled out before him, shimmering like stars in the night sky. He was mesmerized. Never before had he held more than a few gold coins, and now he was in possession of what had to be one hundred. That night, he packed up his belongings. Come morning, he was starting a new life in Riften.

The sun rose and with it a new beginning. He entered the tavern in search of someone to escort him to Riften. Many adventurers passed through Windhelm on their way to Whiterun Hold, and today was no exception. A strong male Orc wielding a large battle axe stood at the bar. The perfect choice. Eyes approached him with gold in hand and made his offer known. The Orc chuckled while snatching the gold from him. "To Riften? The place is swarming with murderers and thieves. Hardly a place for a boy of your age, but that's none of my concern hahaha! Be ready in an hour, lizard. If you're not at the gates, I'm leaving without you." Said the Orc with a grin.

Eyes waited at the gates for three hours before the Orc came stumbling towards him, drunk. "Well, what the hell are you waitin for, lizard? Let's get on with it." They traveled for three days, snow or clear skies. Along the way, the Orc told tales of his adventures, most of which were rich with treasure and beautiful women. "And I chopped his head clean off!" The Orc said while swinging his axe wildly. "I'm the greatest fighter in all of Skyrim, you know. You're lucky to have found me. I could take on ten mages at once, and I have!" Eyes paid no mind to the Orc's ramblings, but instead observed his characteristics. The road to Riften was often filled with wolves, and the Orc made quick work of them, but Eyes couldn't help but think he would struggle to kill much more than that, and he was right.

After entering a small forest, they were ambushed by a rogue archer. The Orc charged into battle swinging his axe with little effect. The archer drew his bow and fired a single shot, targeting the Orc's left knee. The brute screamed as the arrow pierced his armor and flesh. "You coward!" Cried the Orc as he dropped to his knees. "Do you know who you're messing with?! I am.." The Orc's rant was cut short by another arrow, this time piercing the back of his head. Eyes looked on in horror as another archer emerged from behind a tree and approached the Orc's lifeless body. The two Elves searched his escort's corpse for valuables and found the Argonian's previous payment, along with a few other odds and ends. One of the Elves approached Eyes drawing his bow. "Normally, I'd kill you, but since you're just a child, I think you've earned a free pass." Said the Elf shooting an arrow at the stump behind him. "Riften's just a three hour walk from here, if that's where you're headed. I assume it is. I can see the thieving look in your eyes hehehe. You can follow us there if you'd like, that is, if you can keep up!" The Elves sprinted away, leaping over rocks and fallen trees as they made their way to Riften. Eyes quickly rose to his feet and chased after them.
