F3M - A Total Conversion Mod To The Original Fallout

Post » Fri Dec 24, 2010 9:29 am

Well, now that we've gotten the site in workable order and we are getting things rolling I would like to officially announce our project to recreate the Original Fallout game in the Fallout 3 Engine.

It's an ambitious project to say the least and we have no misconceptions that it will take a great deal of work and help from the community which is why we hope that you will all become involved and provide your thoughts and suggestions about the project.

There seems to be a lot of interest out there for this type of project and we only hope that we can put together something great that the community can enjoy!

Please stop by our site. http://www.fallout3mod.com

There are many ways for you to keep up to date with new information as it becomes available, including RSS, email subscription, and our forums. If you have modding talents or are interested in helping out please send us a note to apps@fallout3mod.com.

*Edited to add: (3/17/10)

All Fallout fans,

This project is still alive and kicking. We went through some slow patches and site difficulties but we are still alive and kicking. If you haven't seen we've been doing some good work and increased our web presence a bit. Now you can keep track of our progress via multiple avenues including:

http://www.youtube.com/user/Dakcenturi
http://twitter.com/Fallout3Mod
http://www.facebook.com/pages/Fallout-3-Mod/302209901632?v
http://www.moddb.com/mods/fallout-3-mod

We're well on our way to getting Shady Sands completed but we still need a lot of assistance. Our priority needs are highlighted, but if you fall under any of the other positions, don't hesitate to apply!

* Scripters (We really need help in this department!!!)
* Mappers
* Texture Artists
* 2D Artists
* Modelers
* UI
* Project Management

In addition, we're looking to fill some lead positions so if you fall into any of the above categories and have the time, dedication and desire to be an area lead then let us know!

Sounds very interesting but as with all TC's it will most likely never see the light of day. I wish you the best of luck though, keep us updated.

Well thanks all for the good luck wishes. We are really hoping that this will turn out great and the community will enjoy it. Not to mention it will expose all the new Fallout fans, that don't want to put up with the older graphics, a chance to experience another part of what makes the Fallout genre so great!

As for my personal modding experience, I'm mostly a mapper/scripter. Although, this will be my second TC mod I've headed up, the first being for NwN2. Also, keep in mind there is a lot of work that needs to be done for this mod that doesn't require direct modding experience for those of you interested in lending a hand. There is a lot of information we still need to track down and list out from the original title to make sure we can make this mod as true to the original as possible. So even if you aren't a scripter, or modeler, or animator if you have time and the ability to run the Original Fallout and a desire to help out, then I'm sure we can find something for you to help with :lol:

I dare to say that its WAY too ambitious. Sorry but I feel that you shouldn't even consider starting that. It may sound easy to place houses and people there and there, but the sheer amount of scripting and not to forget making the wasteland would take you up to two years to finish this mod, and believe me the fire has extinguished way before that.

I suggest doing something more simple; like I am doing a TC mod that actually just changes the main questline and adds a few things. But recreating two games of which each took A LOT time to make it impossible.

But in case you are really trying this; I suggest starting with Shady Sands. Making Master's lair at first sounds tempting but everything has to start from low.
Oh, remember to create new textures for those houses! Good luck out there.

If you are referring to http://www.nma-fallout.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=50113. That's still the same project.

As for the project being ambitious that is totally true, it is going to take a great deal of time, really depending on how much help we can bring on. In either case, we are starting small and building from the ground up. The plan is to work through the areas as you would normally play the game.

Yeah, I go there a lot... still I rather have competing mods that can build off each other. Also NMA is a graveyard of unfinished projects...

I would love to help but I have a feeling my skills aren't up to snuff for a project as ambitious as this. I am a computer programmer and have scripted some stuff before so I can probably help with that, and I know the GECK ok.

Just thought I would point out this modder's resource that might help you get started. According to the author you can use it however you like as long as you give him credit.

If I can make a single suggestion, it would be that you should make this original Fallout TC your own. Re-Create, but expand.

I'll say it outright, s'not gonna happen. If I'm wrong I'll be happy for you, (though I have no interest in the remake I won't hold that against those that do or those that are making it) but this won't see the light of day IMO.

I love TC projects, so I wish you the best of luck.

To help you keep motivated, just keep a couple of things in mind:
 • Outright dismissals of your mod may be safely ignored.
 • Do not, however, ignore constructive criticism. Ever.
 • TCs, even if they are never finished, are a valuable contribution to the modding community: they inspire, educate, and push the boundaries.
 • Many very good assets, scripts, and workarounds come out of projects like this; these benefit the community materially as well.
 • You will learn a lot--especially about people working together as a team. :)

TCs are essentially proto-games, and you will learn a lot about game design working on a project like this. Smaller mods, like retextures, custom models, scripts, etc., are great for developing particular skills in particular areas which are absolutely essential to games, but you really only learn about game design by designing something on a large scale that incorporates all of these different elements in a single project. People who dismiss TCs out of hand are correct statistically (99% never come close to completion) but they miss the point, which is that great things are hard to accomplish but worth striving for. If TCs were easy, then by anology, it should be easy for anyone to become an Olympic athlete or a brain surgeon. The fact that it will be difficult does not make it worthless. Quite the contrary.

Again, best of luck.

Good luck with the project though I personally odn't think completely recreating fallout 1 would be a great idea. I know I've already played through it and know the story so why not create your own but within the same area?

I believe that the GTS guys have already [sort of] started somthing very similar....in as much as they [or associated modders] have already released some "origional locations" as worldspaces which can be travelled to, as far as I understand it these "places" are empty essentially and have been released as Modders resources to be filled and worked on.....so not a total TC but something perhaps more reachable? One other thing about GTS, as purely a barebones thing, is that it re-introduces a working Highwayman, Random encounters etc [doing away with fast travel without Vechicles, if you wish] as part of its basic mechanism.......so I would suggest that it already re-introduces a flavour of previous fallouts with a clever use of the new engine etc and thus might be a good starting point for your project.

FO3 is very skimpy on quests. Perhaps you should hone your skills and change that. I wouldn't mind at all playing FO1 or 2 about 100 more times so I certainly hope you do this.

I am afraid that the moding community in general has not gotten to the point where it will be able to assist you MUCH in that endeavor. You might actually finish faster if you start later.

This is one of those projects which might present a problem in terms of releasing the mod in sections, because of that you will have a hard time motivating the community and yourselves. So you must either have an ironclad dedication and zeal or a clever way around this.

Well, here come my hopes for you

May you stay friends and not get frustrated with each other
May everyone stay motivated and not burnout

Sounds like a very interesting idea would be nice to see the old fallout games redone. I started on fallout 2 a while back to see what it's like but haven't really gotten far. Glad to hear your going by areas and i'd also suggest after you finish an area pack it and release it. I don't care if it's small i don't care if there's not much to do. If you do that every time you finish a section you'll actually get somewhere and there's a very low chance this will fall flat on its face like every other absurdly ambitious mod. By the way don't you need legal rights of some kind to completely reproduce the game? I know some guys tried to make a 3d starcraft way back and got slammed and shut down due to legal issues.
