Faction warfare

Post » Tue May 17, 2011 6:40 am

New to the forums so i have no idea if this has been discussed before so here goes...

In fallout 3 and NV i felt as if the factions were just kinda well boring... I would have liked to see more

-capturable towns for whatever faction you work for. diplomatic solutions or the subtler kick in the door approach.

-Be able to start your own raider faction or join one to prey on wastelander caravans.

-Be able to assume some level if not complete control over a faction once u advance. conquering the wastes or turning it into a utopian socity ( well trying to at least). with rival factions battling for the same territory, or rebellions from your ingrateful populous for blessing them with civilization.

-Being the lone wanderer is great and all but...im left wanting more.

what would you like to see?

you can capture towns for your faction in FNV, and dont say FO3 had factions, it had sides, good and bad, and you could only help good.

yeah NV had factions that were supposed to be clashing over hoover dam and new vegas but the only real fight between them was at the end. I will agree with you about FO3. i just feel like so much more could have been done with the factions.

Here here, but what are you gonna do, it was Bethesdas first go at Fallout, and Obsidian had a very short deadline. FO4?

i enjoyed both thoroughly but heres hoping that FO4 or at least the next spinnoff gives the factions a litlle more pressence/depth to them.

Well, there is a mod you may like: Try http://www.fallout3nexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=7070! There, you can (at least in disguise) interact with raiders, recruit them and build a raider themed base (or an utopian one). And you can raid (sic!) caravans with up to five raiders as companions.

what would you like to see?

Once upon a time I started prattling about a strategy/tactics fallout game, http://www.gamesas.com/index.php?/topic/1077289-vault-war-i-a-suggestion-for-a-fallout-strategy-game, but nobody seemed interested.

In Fallout tactics you have a small team. I tried it once, but the game is too slow-paced for my taste.

The way I think faction could be improved is by giving their equipment bonuses and penalties in line with the faction's military doctrine. As far as I'm concerned, the NCR feels like a faction that throws poorly equipped troops into battle, while the Legion throws well trained and well armored troops back at them, especially their higher ranks. However when you compare armor.

NCR regular armor has a DT of 10
NCR Ranger patrol armor has a DT of 15
NCR ranger combat armor has a DT of 20
NCR salvaged power armor also has a DT of 20
Legion Veteran armor has a DT of 10
Legion Prime armor only has a DT of 8
Legion Vexillarius armor has a DT of 14
Legion Praetorian armor has a DT of 12
Legion Centurion armor has a DT of 18

So the Legion's best armor is still 2 DT short of the best NCR, while I think the Legion should have better armor. I think the Legion's regular armor should have a DT of 12/13. Legion Prime armor should have a DT of 17/18, Veteran armor should be around 22. Now I also think it's weird that NCR salvaged power armor has the same DT as Ranger combat armor, so I think it should be upped to 25 resulting in Praetorian armor with a DT of 28, but that would also require all power armors to have their DT upped. Another option would be to lower the DT of NCR armor to 5-10-15-20 and set the legion armor to have a DT of roughly 2/3 points higher than their NCR counterparts.

Now as a more general idea, I think factions should have some strong points and some weak points, in line with their tactics. Things to consider would be
DT vs mobility
ROF vs Damage

Other factors to consider are cost and durability. Things like stealth and accuracy IMO should depend mostly on skill. Furthermore I think you should be able to repair your faction's armor using roughly similar armor from your kills.

I'll have to check that mod out

I would love to have the chance to join the enclave remnants and try to rebuild them.

In new Vegas it just seemed like a skirmish not really any dynamic clashes between the two main factions. I want to see some more signs that the region is involved in a power struggle.

this is how i see it, some elements of the factions in new vegas were well done, the way you could join certain factions, help them or not etc, that was good, however there's some elements of the factions i didn't like, for one thing they never really cruised around the map, they stayed in their bases, so thats one problem, they needed to be cruising around patrolling and bumping into each other a lot more, and they could of had some better bases, all their bases svcked except for maybe the fiends and boomers, even the powder gangers kinda had a cool main base at the prison but they're such a weak enemy they're pretty insignificant, and all the factions needed more firepower, none of the enemies had missle launchers, except maybe one or two super mutants. ceasers legion should of had some better weapons, like gatling lasers, plasma rifles, sniper rifles, marksman rifles, etc.
