3D Fad

Post » Sat May 28, 2011 10:35 am

am I the only one that is sick of this 3D Movie fad? You can't watch any movie these days without it being friggen 3D, and they charge 10-12 dollars for the showing!

My friends love them, I see them as a marketing scam.

"Hey look lets see how many idiots we can get to pay out the ass for a movie they could see for 5-6 bucks normally by resurrecting a dead fad"

It's not really a fad any more, considering there's a lot of large companies backing it. Stuff like the 3DS is going to make it popular in a big way. The 3D that movies use is kind of terrible though, so it's the kind that only requires a 3D output device of some sort is the kind that will take off in a big way.

Yeah I'm pretty sick of it. The only film to do 3D well was avatar and that wasn't a good film anyway. I mean we had 3D in the 1950s cinema and we realized it was a useless fad why can't we now?

It (quite literally) gives me a headache, so I avoid them

Nearly everything about movies is pissing me off these days, from the fact that every single movie trailer looks the same to the "In 3D!" I hear at the end of all of them. How am I supposed to get pumped to see a movie if the trailer does absolutely nothing to catch my attention? And yet at the same time, movies are selling more than ever. I must be missing something.

Personally, I'd love to see more trailers like the early Cloverfield ones. Instead of going out of the way to tell me how "Thrilling" it is, that it's the "Number one movie in America" when somehow fifty other movies seem to be carrying that title, and showing me all of the unfunny jokes thrown into them. Just...ugh. The lack of creativity really gets on my nerves (obviously).

I'm sick of the 2D fad, let alone 3D. It was best in the olden days when all we had was a straight line. These rectangular surfaces just give me headaches. They're good for nothing, I tell you.

My first ever 3D film was Avatar, and I was so excited to see it. Big let down - admittedly, some shots were amazing (IIRC, there was a long shot down a white corridor with no gravity at the start which I thought was brilliant), but overall I didn't think it was worth the extra price on the cinema ticket; would've preferred a better story than something with spanky tech. I've since got glasses as well, so not sure if wearing two pairs at the cinema will be annoying, as I haven't seen a 3D film since then.

But tbh, the majority of the kinds of films I like wouldn't benefit from 3D, so I can see how someone who likes whizzbang films with loads of action would love 3D. It all depends on the kind of film, what you're into, and whether effects have become a substitute for a good story.

Which is actually becoming a bit of a problem. Movies that have no business being in 3D are being made in 3D. The new Saw and My Soul To Take (What the hell, Wes Craven). Movies like A-Team, sure, but I don't think seeing somebody's guts flying out of the screen would be a very good movie-going experience, and I love horror.

Maybe I've just grown way too pretentious for my own good and I can't get enjoyment out of "Brain off" films much anymore. I want more movies with deep storylines, excellent acting performances, amazing soundtracks and mature themes. Not to say I don't like some lighthearted material (I love most of Pixar's stuff), but I'm getting seriously deprived here. At least in the mainstream, which is, admittedly, a terrible place to look for what I want. But then there's the fact that I'm too lazy to hunt for the gold on the internet.

I don't see a need for it either. I don't like when a movie advertising as in 3D but then says "also in 2D". Then again I did an eye test for 3D objects on a page and couldn't see then even with the glasses so the whole concept to me if pointless.

I prefer -most- anime movies over live-action, anyway.

I hate it when my eyes cannot focus on the part of the screen I'm looking at, and my eyes roll around a lot when watching a movie, so I HATE 3D by heart.

I haven't seen a 3D movie yet, mostly because I don't want to risk 10-12 bucks on something that will probably give me a headache (and that I don't like the movie theaters much). I've also read that it could cause health problems, but it isn't widespread enough yet to know for sure.

Wow. A thread calling 3D a fad and no one has come in here to say it isn't and that it'll be the new standard?

That's a first. :teehee:

Anyways, I'm with OP and the rest of you guys on this one. I'm honestly getting sick of it. Unless they perfect the glasses free 3D technology and make it affordable, then I see no viable future for 3D and I see it fading back out just like it has the previous times it's been reintroduced.

Though the 3DS is super fly. :turtle:

Agreed, but as it is the brainless masses will follow any trend, fad or popular idea in their idiotic quest for everlasting acceptance. I keep seeing these awesome movie commercials during the commercial I think "WOW this looks awesome" then all of a sudden it says "IN 3D!!!!!" and it immediately turns me off of them. Most of these movies may as well say "ACTION ACTION ACTION NO PLOT EXPLOSION six SCENE IN 3D!!!!!"

3D...compensating for poor plot lines and limited imagination since 1950.

Couldn't agree more. Hopefully it'll end soon, it's getting real old, real fast. =(

Unless they perfect the glasses free 3D technology...

You realise that that's impossible, right?

The left and right eye need to receive different images from the same screen and it has to work regardless of the position you look at the screen from. The only possible way to achieve that is to project two different images from (onto) the screen and have an object with two filters (each filter letting through light from only one of the two images) in front of your eyes so the left eye looks through one filter and the right eye looks through the other filter. Such an object is colloquially known as "glasses".

Yep.

But they're sure trying to perfect it, because as for right now that's the major thing standing in the way of it sticking around. Not everyone wants to wear glasses just to see a negligible "bonus".

There's loads of 2D movies being made. All the good ones, in fact...

Just a gimmick IMO. I can't think of a single film which would be improved by being in 3D.

Parallax 3D ala the 3DS is just fine for glasses free, the only problem is it has the advantage of being implemented on a handheld so it can be adjusted to what you need it to be.

Yeah, that was my point. Doesn't mean it's impossible though. I'd imagine it'd involve some fancy motion sensing (probably beyond what we have now) to do, and only work for one person. But still, not impossible. Also having a tv adjust position on the fly would also be super expensive.

Unless one of your criteria is a static screen versus one that adjusts itself dynamically depending on the viewers... viewing angle.
