Faded Wraiths

Post » Sun Dec 13, 2009 7:34 pm

Ok, here's the story:

I'm trying to do this mouth of the panther quest (sorry, can't remember the name...it's the one with the ghost that starts in Bravil), and I enter the shipwreck only to be met by two Faded Wraiths. Of course, I've never come across one before and I get slaughtered because I'm copletely unprepared for it. Anyway, it auto-saved with me inside, and there's no way to get back out the way I came. So now I'm stuck in this stupid place trying to fight these things that are impervious to normal weapons, and I'm an awful spellcaster. I've got Flare and heal minor wounds, and that's it. I've also got a silver sword which does almost zero damage. I have this "summon daedroth" scroll that seems to buy me a little time, but he's nothing more than bait really, since he isn't able to kill the things either.

I guess what I'm trying to say here is...WTF do I do now?

Is there an easy way to kill these things that doesn't involve going out and getting some other weapon to do the job?
Do I have to kill them to get out, or can someone point me in the right direction in which to run like hell?

I don't even have the option of loading an earlier save because it's all been autosaves with the last one as me entering the ship.

Here is what I have at my disposal:

Weapons
- Silver Longsword
- Elven Bow
- Dwarven Arrows (62)
- Elven Arrows (4)
- Iron Arrows (2)
- Blade of Woe

Potions
- Sorcery (1 strong, 1 regular, 5 weak)
- Fire Sheild
- Grace
- Nighteye

Spells
- Flare
- Heal Minor Wounds

Scrolls
- Beguiling Touch
- Command Creature
- Drain Skill: Illusion
- Shock
- Snowball
- Summon Daerdroth
- Weakness to Magika
- Weakness to Poison
- Winter's Grasp

Other
- Crab Meat (2)
- Troll Fat (1)
- Imp Gall (1)
- Nightshade (1)
- Bergamot Seeds (4)
- Glow Dust (1)
- Repair Hammer (17)
- Torch (12)

Um...is it possible to delete a thread. I just noticed there was a way out afterall. It was beside a bed, and the first couple times I went over there it only gave me the option to sleep in the bed. I must've been facing the wrong way because I tried it again, and it let me leave.

Boy, is this embarassing.

But if anyone has any tips on how a wimp like me is able to kill these things, I'd greatly appreciate it. But I'm going back to my place in Bravil and stocking up with potions and some more appropriate weapons.

Get a stronger magical weapon or enchant yourself a stronger magical weapon. You can enchant the strongest weapon you have and then it'd be able to harm ghosts even if it runs out of charges.

They have weakness to fire so a fire enchanted weapon is perfect, close an oblivion gate and get a fire damage sigil stone. All undead are immune to frost so frost damage will not harm them.
Spells also works weakness to fire 100 for some seconds doubles the fire damage.
Turn undead makes them stop attacking and run away so you can follow and hit them.

The thing that worries me here is that you're at least level 14 (or they would be Ghosts, not Faded Wraiths) and you don't have either an enchanted weapon or a decent attack spell. It's not obvious what your character's preferred attack mode is from that inventory, as there's no poisons to support an archer either and again the bow is unenchanted. This won't be the only time you get into trouble!

At minimum, if you are playing an archer, keep a stock of Silver arrows (you can't find Daedric until later) so you can handle ethereals with your main weapon. Learn a conjuration spell to summon a distraction as well, and maybe chameleon or invisibility to use while the attention is off you.

Wraith's (including Faded) are not weak to Fire. Zombies are but not Wraiths.

No all undead are immune to frost, although Wraiths are immune (Zombies are resistant but not immune).

OP your silver longsword should work. Maybe a summon Daedroth to distract it, then hack away, blocking it's melee attacks as needed. If that doesn't work then maybe leave until you get more powerful and/or turn down the difficulty slider.

Silver, Daedric, or enchanted weapons work well. As mentioned in the quote though, avoid frost with undead. They are apparently used to cold since they hang around in all those cold tombs and such.

Yeah, I must've just leveled up or something because I was only lvl 13 the last time I checked. I pretty much play the game only one way. I rely heavily on stealth and my bow without much in the way of melee attacking or spellcasting. It's mostly a philosophical thing with me (theives not using magic, heavy armour, or any weapon bigger than a short sword, etc.), but to be honest, I'm not even sure I know how to learn different spells (I only have the two I started with) or enchant weapons if I wanted to.

As for my inventory, I do have lots of enchanted weapons that I've picked up from those I've killed, but I left just about everything else back in Bravil so I'd be able to carry more stuff back, which is why I had so little on me. I always find that I'm leaving valuable stuff in dungeons and things because I can't carry enough, so I try to travel light. The only reason I brought the sword was because it was silver and I could usually kill a ghost with a few hits with that thing or silver arrows (but I ran into a bunch of will-o-the-whisps on the way and ended up using them all up). I'd never seen a Faded Wraith until this point and was a little surprised when I was trapped with so many in close proximity. Plus, they're a lot tougher and use some pretty nasty magic.

Either way, there's clearly a lot about this game I have yet to learn.

Since you are RP'ing a thief, I'd strongly suggest buying or stealing a ring enchanted with Feather. You can buy a Feather spell or potions or scrolls from some merchants or Mages Guild. Feather basically adds weight to what you can carry. If you close an Oblivion Gate and get a sigil stone with Feather, then just activate the sigil stone in your inventory, pick the item that you wish to enchant, name it and POOF you now have a shirt or pants or ring or necklace that makes your load lighter. This would allow you to stick with your RP style, but also make your job of carrying stuff much easier. Hope that helps.

Looks like everyone answered your main question already but as for the spells and enchanting, you can buy spells from spell merchants, such as those in every mages guild hall, at the warlocks luck in bravil, or the mystic emporium or Edgar's Discount spells in the imperial city. As for enchanting you can enchant using sigil stones from oblivion gates. Once you have done the mages guild recommendation quests you can enter the arcane university and make your own spells and enchantments

Thanks for the tips, everyone. I haven't come across any enchanted bows, and I haven't even learned what a sigil stone is yet, let alone where to get one or how to use it (I'm very new to this game and I haven't played any of the previous ES titles either). Everything I have I've stolen from something I've killed or found in a chest somewhere. I haven't yet begun to tinker with alchemy or enchanting weapons or stuff like that. I don't even think I've bought anything from a merchant. I usually just go to them to sell stuff I've picked up.

Someone mentioned poisons earlier. I usually don't use them, but I've got lots. I just didn't bring any along with me (again, just to keep the load as light as possible).

When all else fails, go to the imperial city district and purchase a wand called Apotheosis.

I nick named it the 911 wand, because it only has like 12charges or something, but itll kill anything.

Poisons do not work on wraiths. They're immune to both frost and poison. Fire will work, but they are not weak to it. Their main attack is frost, so the more resistant to frost you are, the better.

If you're an archer, you really need to either acquire an enchanted bow or some kind of enchanted melee weapon. Shock is a good choice, because not very many enemies are immune to it.

One possibility of getting an enchanted weapon would be to raid one of the goblin tribes' caves (tribal goblins have names, like "Bloody Hand" or "Sharp Tooth.") The goblin shaman will have a totem staff, which shoots a 20 point Shock spell. I would advise doing that as early as possible, because the shamans (and the warlords) are leveled goblins, and they will get harder as you level up, just as these ghosts are doing.

What I find most troubling, and should worry you, is that you're relying on nothing but Autosaves. This is a recipe for disaster as they are known to become corrupt over time. Keeping multiple saves is always a good idea. This way when trouble happens, either mod related, crash during save, or any other unforeseen event, you have something to fall back on.

Start with alchemy, at least create some restore health potions. As you skill increase in alchemy, the potions/poisen you create your self are way better than the stuff you find.

As for the ship wreck, try to exit it and see if the wraiths follows you out (some times they do, but you might have to wait a little). That gives you some freedom and distance to those thingsā€¦

If you are on pc, install the attack and hide mod (for later events).

No, I'm on PS3, but those are still good tips. I did end up finding a way out, and one of them did follow me, but I just took off running back to Bravil rather than sticking around trying to kill him with some more room to maneuver.

I'm starting to realise I'm a little too one-dimentional. I still want to try to avoid using magic (or at least getting too advanced with it), but I'm going to work on bringing up my blade skills so when I'm backed into a corner without effective use of my bow, I'm not a complete sitting duck. I'm still torn on how much I want to get into alchemy with this character though.
