Falling for the Dagger...

Post » Fri May 13, 2011 2:37 pm

I've been meaning to try Daggerfall for about 600 years now. Being knee-deep in the familiar Oblivion and Morrowind, I'd like to get stuck in to Daggerfall too. Now that it's available for free I have absolutely no excuse not to try it.

However, I'd like to hear some opinions on the game first.

Graphics aren't of paramount importance to me, I've been a fan of Dungeon Master since it's release in the 80's - and I'm only 25!

Should I install Daggerfall?

I think the answer is somewhat obvious.

A resounding, YES!

I think the threads on this site for 'What I did today in Daggerfall' and 'Veteran help for newbies' are good places to go to get a vibe for what people think about the game.

The problem is,very few are going to post any message on the web saying they are sorry they downloaded it, because it's free. They will just quietly try it, and if they don;t like it will just as quietly delete the game. So you won't see the huge 'was it worth the money or not'. Generally those that find they love it will post why. You will have to decide whether their 'why's' would be your 'why's'.

For example,on finding out a certain innkeeper was looking for help, I went to him to get a quest His response? 'Your the same (race) as my ex - no disrespect, but i'll use someone else...!'

The thing to bear in mind, is that many of the problems people initially found were control problems. For some reason Bethesda left the standard control as the 'weird' one, and the WASD mouse look 'normal' one has to be chosen from options or by changing the confg file.

If you have broadband and a 200gb spare on a drive, i would say it's a no-brainer. Check with the threads here with any install/setup problems. Also gen up on DOSBox if you haven't used that utility, or get a GUI front-end as well, like D-Fend Reloaded, to make it easier and make DOSBox more 'windows orientated'.

Personally, I would put Daggerfall behind Morrowind, but ahead of Oblivion. When you add about 50-60 mods to Oblivion, it brings it up to Daggerfall.

Don't know if any of the above helps. But between all the thread here regarding Daggerfall, I think the answers you need have already been posted.

In short, I think it grows on you. The first 2-3 hours will be frustrating and hard, but then, once you get to know the basics, it'll be a breeze (I don't mean dungeons and combat encounters! These are still hard). So much to do, so much to learn, so much to explore - try it!

I also like to keep in mind that DF is a 13 year old game, yet it's got so much to do it was way ahead of its time.

I've read about this. I'll definitely have to get this sorted before playing. I'll need deal with bugs and I'll be sure to install any graphical/sound improvements if there are any.

Morrowind is particularly taxing to newcomers. Getting to grips with the learning curve is one of the best things about playing games for the first time.

There aren't any graphical or sound fixes (unfortunately, since I'd love to mute my horse). However, there are a number of bug fixes and quest packs available. I recommend, in this order, QUESTPAK.ZIP (which adds a number of user-made quests to the game, in addition to the absolutely fabulous CompUSA quest pack, which was Bethesda made), FACTFIX.ZIP, which fixes errors in the faction database, and DFQFIX, which fixes a LOT of quest bugs, including the tutorial, which for some bizarre reason, gamesas never fixed. They can all be found http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Daggerfall:Files.
