Falling for the Lies

Post » Sun Mar 02, 2014 11:46 am

Does anyone think that, RP wise, it's far fetched that anyone in their right minds would be fooled by Ralis Sedarys' lies at Kolbjorn Barrow? The fact that he, at first says he's got financiers back on the mainland, then says he doesn't have money to excavate the tomb should instantly say he's lying, shouldn't it? In such events I personally can't see my Dragonborn being na?ve enough to part with his gold, even the first thousand gold. I mean, how does he know that this obvious liar isn't going to run off with it?

That whole quest has shenanigans written all over it the moment you get there.

Spoiler
At the end of the quest, I killed him because I couldn't believe he was actually "possessed".

And only after the second gold request did I feel I was being jipped.

I think thousands of people fall prey to confidence tricksters every day of the week. With that in mind it's not beyond the realms of possibility that a Skyrim character might be na?ve in certain matters and fall foul of the odd NPC on occasion.

I was wracking my brains to find a good RP reason for why my Dragonborn would part with just the thousand gold, let alone the rest, but couldn't. He only knows there's a small amount of stalhrim down there, along with some antiques of some kind, which is hardly enough reason to risk giving money to such a seemingly untrustworthy individual. He doesn't know anything about the Dragon Priest nor the word wall, which might have made it a bit more worth the risk.

As for the fate of Sedarys. If, for some reason, my Dragonborn had made it to the end of the quest, he would've forced Sedarys to make up for his deceit by doing a long stretch as a servant to Sorine in Fort Dawnguard, before maybe becoming some sort of full member in the future.

lol Maybe it's my own suspicious nature coming out in my character. It's certainly not the first time my own personality has dictated how my character acts. But in-game, I guess that's a reason why he'll make a good leader for the future. He's not easily fooled by tricksters.

Well, my character liked what she saw, and her lust for power is near-blinding, so yeah. No prob for her

I remember when DB was released the 1st time I played the quest, 99% of me was convinced that the whole thing was a con but 1% of me was saying go for it, there may be something really unique and good down there in the burrow. Curiosity of course got the better of me and I did in fact finish the quest. Incidently I have just played it again with my latest character and completed it yesterday, guess I'm just a mug for punishment! LOL

I did not have My characters begin the Quest at first, largely for similiar reasons.

Spoiler
I was trying to find the last word of the Shout, and looked on the UESP to learn where to find it

Using guides before exploring anywhere in the game would completely ruin the game and take all the fun out of it for me. I prefer to find things out for myself rather than follow a walk through.

That's the thing, my character isn't that desperate for power. He figures he can get things in other ways and can miss out on the odd barrow. And like I said, I'm playing my character as him, not as me who knows what's down there. Also, if I could do full on RP I'd most probably get the rest of my team, along with maybe members of the Dawnguard to excavate the place under my full control and bypass the Dunmer altogether.

Using a Guide after hunting for One Last Word when a character has every Word of every other Shout known and Unlocked is better than rage quitting, or using a Console Command to add the Word.

Each to their own I guess, I however prefer exploring until I find what I'm after rather than a guide doing it for me. There's no wrong or right way to play the game and as long as people enjoy how they play that's all that matters really isn't it.

A bloody waste of money, that one. Only did the quest once due to curiosity. I'd rather spend my Septims on sweetrolls, thank you very much.

I played that bit again, where he explains why he hasn't got any money when he admits he's got a "patron". He said that they're only willing to pay for the goods upon receipt. Yeah, but being a "patron" they're supposed to fund the expedition itself, not just pay for the goods when they get them. That would just make them buyers, not patrons.

pa·tron (pā′tr?n)

n.
1. One that supports, protects, or champions someone or something, such as an institution, event, or cause; a sponsor or benefactor
Which kinda blows a hole right through his reasoning! Why would he need me if he's got what he describes as both a "financier" and a "patron"?

For me, the quest would work better if there were similar opportunities (i.e. npc requesting money from you) elsewhere in the game where the pay-off was good, and there was no deception involved.

My current character, while not naive or inexperienced, would like to believe the best of people and attempts to do so when given the opportunity. He considers denying help to an earnest request a much graver sin than wasting money on a trickster, so even if the latter is much more likely than the former he's not going to take a chance on it except in extreme circumstances.

It was clear to my Altmer that a sinister force had taken control of the Dunmer and he just played along, money not meaning much to him. He also wanted to get his hands on the enchanted gear.

Wasting a couple of thousand gold here and there doesn't really matter when your Dovahkiin is a millionaire.

Exactly, what's a few thousand septims in relation to what's potentially down there.

Even if there was nothing down there, a couple of thousand septims would not matter.

My characters' pocket has a near unending supply of gold, it's so easy to get rich in Skyrim and I usually get to the point where I have so much money I don't know what to do with it.

Some random guy asks me for money? Sure, why not. Money is a non-issue. :disguise:

Yes, it's only at the beginning of the game that my characters struggle for gold, however after about level 10 they're swimming in it!

My Dragonborn's don't care about money, or powerful artifacts, but they will certainly give 1000 Septims to a shady character just for the entertainment value of seeing what the guy does next.

Spoiler
It wasn't like the person wasn't getting at least some results, though I'd have liked to be able to stick around and supervise the excavation scene... even if she had been mishandling the funds somehow, at least they were getting somewhere (But the loss of life was catastrophic - how did they mishandle THAT part?) I'd have liked to be able to set up a supervisory role to ensure I was on-call as SOON as something went awry after the first disaster.
