[RELz] Falling Stars

Post » Wed Mar 30, 2011 12:54 pm

== Falling Stars ==

A tiny mod that adds falling stars to the game. They appear randomly at night when the sky is clear, the amount can be adjusted via console.

Please note that they only appear when the sky is 100% clear. There are weather types that look pretty clear, but aren't 100% clear. This mod works in any worldspace that has clear weather (but not in interiors for obvious reasons).

To adjust the frequency of the falling stars type 'set PTStarTimer to x' into the console, where x is the maximum amount of seconds between stars spawning. Default is 20. So if you think there are too many stars spawning you could type 'set PTStarTimer to 60' for example.

= Installation =

Put the meshes and textures folders as well as the PTFallingStars.esp into your Oblivion\Data folder. Check the esp in the launcher.

= Permission =

You can do with this mod whatever you want, just give credits.

Obviously screenshots don't work very well for this mod. I've made a video, but Youtube gives me trouble right now. But I guess you've seen a falling star already in real life, doesn't look much different in the game.

Very nice. I did something like this in RGO as an Easter Egg a long time ago - nice and concise implementation you have there. :)

Haha...I remember that star caused a lot of confusion among players who spotted it. Hope now they will know where the stars come from. And if there is a bug with my mod I'll simply tell them it's the easter egg from RGO.

A brillant idea, but you should make a little video out of it. Or I`ll do it for you. Gonna check this out now.

Is it me or do the falling stars only appear at the horizon, but no right above your head? I mean if I look right up (let`s stay to the north star), I don`t see any falling stars appearing?

Also, I would like to be able to set the star timer with a ini, rather than having to type it into the console. Please add the ini and and I`ll be very happy with it.

OR...you could create a BAT file with the star command and use the console to start that more easily...

Edit: Great Mod Phitt!

Perfect. I've wanted meteors in Oblivion for years and they look great. Thanks!

You're really on a roll, Mudwater and now this :tops:

Nice idea! I've been using a similar mod for Morrowind for a long time now, but so far I haven't been able to spot any meteors in it at all!

Sounds like they're a bit more common here. :D

Is there a game engine limitation why meteors only show up when it's 100% clear? I remember the morrowind meteors mod also did that. Shame if it is as meteors passing behind cloud would look very cool.

Thanks for the video. Like already mentioned by WhoGuru I made one myself, but after uploading to Youtube (twice already) it never finished processing - maybe there was too much black screen in the video so Youtube got confused and thought it was fake or something. Will try to upload your video.

It's just one setting. I think an ini file for just one setting is not really necessary.

This is a left-over from Mudwater (and Mudwater uses a lot of left-overs from other mods I never completed). Originally I wanted to use the falling stars in the mushroom world, but they didn't fit to the sky I used in the end.

There is...because the falling stars are in front of the sky and not part of it (which is impossible to do if you want them to spawn randomly). They can't appear behind clouds so if there were clouds in the sky they would be in front of the clouds - which would look rather stupid.

I just saw one!

Over the last few days of playing I kept looking up thinking nah I'll probably not see one - then tonight at cloud ruler - right across the sky.

It was cloudy though. Using AN it was partially cloudy and it was below the clouds.

Actually that is not strange to see - here on earth we have 3 layers of clouds and I'd think you could see them below the two top layers. Of course most I've seen were coming straight down and were quick momentary things. This one shot right across the sky from west to east. Don't know if that is a necessary mechanic.

great stuff.

I installed this some weeks ago and I saw a falling star. Good work but sometimes we have the feeling that the falling stars are not part of the sky. Thanks for the contribution.

The stars come randomly from all directions. I might alter them a bit so they don't fly so far. The clouds are most likely a 'bug' with AN. In the CS you can set the weather type for each weather you create, like 'cloudy', 'pleasant', 'rain' and a few others. In vanilla Oblivion 'pleasant' is used only for completely cloudless weather and 'cloudy' is used for any type of weather that has clouds, not only the overcast weather type. That might be a bit confusing if you make a new weather type and don't look at the vanilla values. If I see 'cloudy' I think about a lot of clouds and not a few small clouds. The problem is that the script checks for 'pleasant' weather. If a mod adds a weather type that is marked as 'pleasant' while it should be marked as 'cloudy' then you would see the stars in front of the clouds.

Good work but sometimes we have the feeling that the falling stars are not part of the sky.

Not sure what you mean...

Excellent little mod. I've had it on for a while but haven't noticed or even looked for falling stars, but when taking some screenshots of the night sky there they were. Really nice.

Heh it can be hard to get screenshots of them sometimes. There were a few times I was taking screenshots of nighttime scenes and thought "oh this would be even better with a star streaking across the sky!" which was followed by a few minutes of spamming my screenshot key hoping I'd capture one of them. It's rare you can see the star and then be able to take a shot of it, you have to get ahead of it, which means sitting around hitting the screenshot key over and over again hehe :P
