Fallout 3FNVF4 and my PC

Post » Fri Nov 27, 2015 7:01 pm

I'm currently playing the Fallout games on PC (F1, F2, not probably not Tactics, F3 GOTY, FNV, then 4 when it comes out), and I went to "Can You Run It" to check how well my (new) PC would run F3 and FNV, it said that it would run F3 on recommended settings, and FNV on minimum settings. My main specs are these:

Intel i7-4790K 4GHz

Windows 7 Professional 64BIT

16GB RAM

NVIDIA GForce GTX970

Then I went to Game Debate to check the predicted Fallout 4 requirements, and entered my specs, and it suggested that my PC will be way way past what will be required, 10/10 all the way.

So that leaves me wondering if Game Debate is making a very rough guess (because I'm hopeful that my PC will be able to run F4, but maybe only somewhere between mnimum and recommneded settings), and it also makes me wonder why "Can You Run It" thinks that my PC can only just manage to run FNV when "Game Debate" thinks that it can go all out with F4.

So are people's thoughts on my specs and the recent Fallout games? Should it be able to play F3 and FNV on high settings? And will it be able to run F4?

Well, we don't actually know the system requirements yet, so Game Debate is only taking a wild guess. But they are probably somewhere in the ballpark, I can't see the requirements being to far beyond skyrim.

As for 'Can You Run It'/System Requirement Labs, they have a pretty poor reputation for actually anolyzing hardware correctly. Often going by how new something is, getting specs wrong or just missing things like multiple cores or getting the amount of memory wrong.

For example: It tells me that my system fails on every single aspect except hard drive space with regards to Skyrim, GTA4 and Dishonoured. Both games I have put a fair few hours into.

You should be able to run New Vegas fine.

Hell, dude. That is a pretty beastly machine. That thing should be able to run FO3 and NV at way above ultra. In fact it should be able to run them with at least 2K texture packs and whatever graphics mods you please. Whatever sites you're visiting are wrong, because your machine is pretty good.

That thing should be able to run Fallout 4 at high at least, most likely ultra.

Good to hear! It was an expensive PC, so I was hoping that that would be the case.

That PC is way overkill in my opinion. My PC is not nearly as good as that and it can run Fallout 3 and NV and way above max, so yours should be good to go for FO4.

The only problem I see is for fallout 3. Windows 7 isn't able to play the game without some work arounds. I would suggest heading over to the pc hardware forum for fallout 3 and reading up on it before you try to install the game.

Really? I didn't have to do anything to get it working on my PC.

That's odd it took me several tries to get it to work. I had to follow the stickied thread in that sub forum to the letter to finally get it to work right. Either way I guess it's something to look out for.

I've had to do all sorts of .ini hoop-jumping to make it run on mine. And there's stickied threads about it in the FO3 forum on Steam. So, yeah - FO3 doesn't always play nice with Win7/64 and many-core processors.

Yeah I was deliberating over system specs for over a year, so I went all out when I eventually bought it. At least it hopefully means that I won't have to upgrade it for a good while.

As for Fallout 3 and Windows 7, I installed disc 1 with no problems, and the game runs well too. Disc 2 wouldn't run the setup file initially, so I looked on these forums and saw that many people were having issues installing F3 on Windows 7, and also having issues running disc 2. But then I tried disc 2 a few more times and then it worked. So it seems like it's luck of the draw for Windows 7 users. Hopefully it won't start crashing all the time during the game. Can't wait to play F3 and FNV on PC with hopefully much improved settings compared to the Xbox 360 versions, and hopefully with mods too.

You and I have essentially the same hardware. I am running windows 8.1 however. The problem with Fallout 3 is the way that Win 7 and 8 use multiple cores. I had it working great until I went into my home in Megaton. Then it crashed every time. I did the ini fix to change the cores used and it played perfect after that. As far as Fallout 4 goes I am pretty sure you will be fine.

Glad to hear everything worked out fine for you. I hope you enjoy the games, and I'm sure with a powerhouse machine like that you will have no trouble running fallout 4 at higher settings

A little off topic but how come some games that are known for not working on W7 suddenly work on W7 without no user editing? I had Fallout 1 and 2 work on my W7 just fine, even though they're from the 90s. I wonder if F3 will be the same.

I'm mainly excited about the prospect of mods, both for the Fallout games and countless others, having played vanilla F3 and FNV to death on X360. As well as the extra-content mods, I'm hoping there will be a mod to increase the F3 difficulty without just turning up the difficulty level and having bullet-sponges for enemies. I also hear there is an F3 mod similar to FNV hardcoe mode too, so there should be various ways to shake it up a bit.

For best results combine Fallout 3 and New Vegas into one game with the Tale of Two Wastelands mod and mod the crap out of it.

That mod looks really interesting, although it brings up many questions, such as:

Do you play as the same character, switching between the two wastelands at will?

Do you therefore have quests from both games in your journal?

Do faction allegiances still work the same way?

Is the difficulty consistent in both games (I found F3 to easy on Normal so I always played on Hard, but I found FNV to be about right on default difficulty with hardcoe mode on)?

Would other mods for F3 and FNV conflict with the Wasteland mod (I'm particularly interested in mods which add new content or change the gameplay, in order to make it feel more like a new experience)?

Does the Wasteland mod itsel add any new content to either or both games?
