Fallout 3 Again

Post » Tue May 17, 2011 3:52 am

I completely agree with you. I think the atmosphere in Fallout 3 is greatly under-appreciated. This sounds a bit stupid or possibley even psychotic but, if I haven't been on Fallout 3 in a while I breathe a sigh of relief when I'm back in that ruined old DC!
Can't say I'm at all excited or have any desire to replay New Vegas. I think the fans of Fallout 1 and 2 have gotten a bit too precious of the old stuff and what THEY think Fallout should be. They were shouting fromt he rooftops before New Vegas came out about how it's got the original developers and it's going to be the true sequel etc and yeah maybe it's a bit more like the old games but, that doesn't make it better. Too much rose tinted glasses and nostalgia I think.

I want a direct sequel to Fallout 3 next time please!

I have to agree there.

The Fallout 3 atmosphere is indeed of the good old post apocalyptic wasteland scenarios. On leaving Vault 101 and into the game, I had this distinct familiar feeling of "ah, this is Fallout ok", and gone were my concerns that it would be something less. Fallout 3 is indeed a great sequel of the scenario, and with so much improvement and polish, I was amazed. The wasteland is still wasteland but not as barren as the wasteland in New Vegas or the early Fallouts, there is content to be dug out of the rubble, as you would expect.

"I think the fans of Fallout 1 and 2 have gotten a bit too precious of the old stuff and what THEY think Fallout should be." They do seem to be, but they are entitled to their opinion, basically the only real difference between the old and the new is the game-mechanics of combat, turn-base and real-time, and the makers of New Vegas (those involved in making the early Fallout) dropped the turn-base combat, they at least were not so "precious" of that old stuff.

Fallout 3 in closer to what a Fallout RPG should be and I expect the next scenario to be along those lines with even extra tweaks and polish that 3 had. That's what Bethesda has a reputation of doing to a previous version.

PC Gamer gave Fallout 3 2nd place on its '100 Best PC games of all time' list, praising its user-modifications, deep gameplay and overall polish.

(Didn't say what came 1st though)

I would suggest Fallout Tactics as a great must-play sometime, but you already have a year of game-play.

Think you'll find no 3 was Oblivion! http://www.pcgamer.com/2011/02/16/the-100-best-pc-games-of-all-time/8/, no 2 was WOW and no 1 Deus Ex! Just wanted to http://www.pcgamer.com/2011/02/16/the-100-best-pc-games-of-all-time/10/ that out

I'm not disagreing that FO3 is/isn't a great game, I really love it, and it rightly won game of the year awards (hence the GOTY boxset I myself bought at christmas) it just wasn't no 2 in that list.

Anyhow.....

I started Fallout 3:GOTY last night for the first time (played Fallout 1 and 2 in the past) and ended up spending hours at the PC. It's kind of scary how Bethesda's worlds can draw me in, as "Morrowind" and "Oblivion" did too. Great job Bethesda.

Currently my character is encountering the Talon mercs for the first time.

It's all a bit meaningless anyway, these lists are supposed to be a bit of fun, rather than a scientific process for determining what the best game ever is. Like with awards, you should only take them *so* seriously.

,snip-

Fallout 3 more or less followed the same single player MMORPG approach that The Elder Scrolls does, complete with its emphasis on grinding against filler enemies and dungeon crawling for loot. I don't favor this approach because I find it boring and monotonous; don't get me wrong, I don't hate it, but between the two approaches it's not the one that I personally prefer.

-snip-

Well, what some people see as grinding and dungeon crawling for loot, I personally see it as exploring a wasteland to see what's left of the world before the bombs fell, maybe learn a thing or two along the way. And that I love - not tedious grinding, but exploring.

edit: I had a look at the list, and you gotta give bethesda credit for making 3 of the top 30 games :P Only blizzard managed a similar feat with D2, SC2 and WoW.

I have been playing New Vegas now since October and am now on my 3rd character. I must say I love the game, but I bought a copy of Fallout 3 GOY edition and it was like I had never played the game when I popped it in and began a new character. I thoroughly enjoy both games, but the feeling I got tonight playing Fallout 3 is unmatched since that is the game that started me on Fallout. I am enjoying right now playing both New Vegas and Fallout 3 looking at the nuances in both games that make them masterpieces and literally the best gaming experience I have ever had. These games never get old.

Just thought I would share.

Fallout 3 is timeless no matter how many times i played it i never got sick of it.

Whatever .... but time changes nothing of the fact of Fallout 3 being a deep gameplay and having overall polish in a fantastic game.

You can try a poo-poo it as much as you like but I have played it .... and it is so true.

Not so meaningless after all.

It is for me

F3 is a good game, do doubt about that, but Deus Ex 1 easily trumphs it and I just finished that two weeks ago. :trophy:

I also find it quite funny when your usual "awards" argument gets dismissed even by fellow F3 fans.

Ah you finished it, Deus Ex, one of those games that finish early.

Great game though Deus Ex is, Fallout 3 seems to never end .. 3+ trophies.

I don't hate New Vegas either, I DID play it to death. But even though it has (arguably) better controls, better plot, better dialogue, better storytelling... it just has no b____y atmosphere. OK, I know the desert is a bit lifeless, but... I dunno. Even from the start... FO3 your get your first gun from your Dad, learn to shoot. In NV you walk out of the Docs and some semi-random woman just GIVES you an "expensive" gun... why would she do that? Does she give out free guns to everyone who comes through town? And it goes on and on...I dunno. Maybe the final NV+5dlc will be good. But I played FO3 for years and still not got bored of it, I've played NV for a few months and it's ... meh... Bethesda: can FO4 be a bit more Mad Max and a little less Bonanza? pleeeeeeeeeeeease? *bats eyelashes*

This. I have played though FNV about 4 times now trying to get most of the endings. At the moment I am back to Fallout 3 butr will return to FNV when the DLCs are released on DVD. if i had to choose it would be FO 3

They both rock. I liked how Beth managed to do the whole scenery and stuff. As a story RPer my preferences are a bit different, but the sandbox approach never gets old, I gotta give ya that.

New Vegas does some things better (open plot, companions, reputation, craftable aid, hardcoe) and Fallout 3 does some things better (more involved sidequests and rewards for them, craftable weapons, player housing). I personally love them both, as much as I also love Fallouts 1, 2, and Tactics.

I decided yesterday to play one of my old Fallout 3 characters until Honest Hearts comes out for NV. My goal is to draw out my current NV character, do as much as possible in the base game, and have that character play all the DLCs.

When I loaded up the FO3 character I was on Mobile Base Crawler and had cleared the first level. I still have Point Lookout to do (I'll probably pass on MZ), and some sidequests to do on that playthrough, so I should be able to keep myself occupied until the 17th.

No, it's a matter of taste. Fallout 3 was an extreme departure from the originals, not only in the more obvious ways (camera, combat system), but also in more subtle ways.

Not an extreme departure, more an evolvement, or how it should have been more like in the first place. Totally Fallout 3 has the Fallout post-nuclear scenario feel with all the essence and type of content as of old, and as I play and absorb the game I see that is now so much closer to perfection.

A lot more focus on combat, a lot less focus on interaction with characters and organizations, a very black and white setting despite the series' history of being morally gray, a glaring lack of quests that allow for multiple solutions depending on the player's skill proficiencies, etc.

True the combat is no longer board-game playas of old, something that had no place mixed in with RPG. Focus on combat was also very much the game of the early Fallouts, and sadly at the expense of the role-play. Interactions in Fallout 3 with quests and storylines now have no easy clear result decisions, morals are now down to the player, nothing is black and white there are now many choices. Now in Fallout 3 it's not all down to skill proficiencies which takes much away from moral choices.

Well Fallout 3 did sequel the early Fallouts in respect of constantly having to fight enemies and gather loot, but it is now done so much better and is no longer a boring grind as it was in the old board-game play which you prefer, ok.

You're free to favor whatever approach fits your preferences, but don't play the nostalgia card if someone disagrees with you. More often than not "nostalgia" and "rose tinted glasses" have absolutely nothing to do with it.

No "nostalgia" for the old Fallouts then ok, no "rose tinted glasses" either ok, very dark glasses perhaps then, whatever, something's wrong somewhere and we know it is not Fallout 3, maybe those of the early Fallouts probably not remembering how it really was. I played the early Fallouts, enjoyed them way back when there was not much else good going, true I got bored at times and there was little game challenge, but hey it was all new then so not to complain, but now playing Fallout 3 ... what a breath of fresh air, a fantastic improvement all round in every respect and with no boredom that I will ever have to look back on with whatever glasses I can find.

As for atmosphere, the series has never had a consistent atmosphere, and I doubt it ever will. The atmosphere changes depending on the location and the circumstances in that location. I doubt that Fallout 4 will have the same atmosphere as any of the previous Fallout games.

The Fallout series may have different atmospheres of play, but the Fallout sequels do have a constant game-play atmosphere and Fallout 3 has kept that atmosphere, and as I step out of the vault and breath in the atmosphere, I say to myself "ah, this is Fallout ok but so much better it's astonishing, it really is".

I played New Vegas to death, then went back (after a looong break) to Fallout 3. Wow, I love Fallout 3. You can have New Vegas back, but you're never forcing me to give up FO3. GOTY edition, just blows New Vegas out of the water. Sorry, it does. By the time you get to Vegas, New Vegas gets boring... however, even all these years later, there is nothing like the thrill of exploring the DC ruins. Nothing.

(I'm not a big gamer, but I've seen/played a lot of modern games, and most of them leave me cold. More storytelling! although, not as much as NV, because that's overkill :P)

same here, everything here I agree with and have done.

cheers :foodndrink:
