Fallout 4: Bigger Battles, Better Shooting & Less Clunky

Post » Sat Nov 28, 2015 10:28 am

This is a crosspost from reddit that I thought you guys would appreciate.

http://www.gamespot.com/videos/fallout-4-bigger-battles-better-shooting-and-less-/2300-6426382/

Highlights from the link:

-No new gameplay videos, it's just them talking over the occasional backdrop of cut scenes from the existing trailers and/or Fallout 3 gameplay.

-Game handles large scale, multi party combat much better than before, especially with VATS.

-Skill system appears to be gone, replaced with a perk system that is based around your SPECIAL stats instead. Each point of stat unlocks a different perk, so if you start with ten Strength, for example, you can potentially take even the last Strength based perk right at the start.

-Looting corpses is more streamlined, you seem to be able to mouse over them and see their contents, instead of interacting with them like a container.

-Radial menu for weapon equips. Hooray for consoles, svcks for PCs

-Can shoot off limbs of feral ghouls, including legs, and they will crawl at you like typical zombie game style enemies.

-Brotherhood of Steel is confirmed to be a potential friendly faction, mentioned that the player can "call in backup" from friendly factions.

-Protagonist will self narrate while walking around the gameworld. Oh God please no.

-Radiation in the game no longer works like in previous games. Instead of taking away from your stats, it now works exactly like it does in Fallout Shelter, where it takes away from your maximum health on your health bar.

-Melee has critical hit animations, mentioned was hitting someone in the nuts to knock them down, then bashing their head with a baseball bat while they are on the ground.

The removal of skills is a polarizing topic. I've actually been secretly hoping that skills would be removed and replaced with much deeper and diverse perks for years. If done right this could improve the game in numerous ways without dumbing it down. Do I have faith that Bethesda can accomplish this without oversimplifying the system? Not after Skyrim and its blatant removal of things (I still miss acrobatics and spellmaking).

The self-narrating protagonist is exactly what I was afraid of, exactly what everyone who was in favor of a voiced protagonist said would never happen. He's going to be commenting on everything, telling the player how to feel regardless of how we want to roleplay them. Until a mod comes out that removes this entirely, I'm probably gonna wait to pick this game up. It may be a dumb thing to nitpick about, but hey: I like what I like.

What do you guys think about all the new information revealed? Are you in favor of what we've seen so far? Or do you have constructive feedback?

I like the looks of it all but to regards to the self narrating it will likely be button prompt like in e3 footage "sugar bambs..."

Apparently one example of the self narration was, for example, if you're near a computer your character will say "let's see if I can hack this".

I′m quite sure it was if you use a computer and initiate the hacking the PC says it.

It seems to me like Bethesda Game Studios is ignoring the PC video games market and PC gamers.

This is a big mistake to do.

-Looting corpses is more streamlined, you seem to be able to mouse over them and see their contents, instead of interacting with them like a container.

-Radial menu for weapon equips. Hooray for consoles, svcks for PCs

Like do I just point the mouse cursor over loot and I can see the name of the loot without having to loot containers and dead NPC's? I know some RPG video games have this, but the way Fallout 4 will have it done scares me.

Why can't we PC gamers just get a simple drag and drop inventory system? Something similar to The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind.

The PC version of The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim has sold a total of 9,270,000 copies so far on PC.

How is it possible in 2015 or lets say from 2013 for Bethesda Game Studios to still be ignoring the PC video games market and what PC gamers want for a inventory system in a RPG video game?

Pretty much all of the same stuff we heard at Quakecon, I like Both the new perk system, and the dialogue system, I grew tired of silent characters long long ago. So many games use Silent protags and I feel they miss out on a lot of good story telling. This is IMO of course, but even in the Pokemon games I found it lazy: "..... ......... ........."

Also it can sometimes bridge the sensory gap the player has by not physically being there, like smell, pain, etc. The Dialog also seems to flow a lot better, which I love. I wasn't a fan of everything pausing when you talk to someone. As long as the Shorthand answers we have in the dialogue tree aren't too vague I can see it working great.

Sidenote: Am I Racist or does the taller guy in the Video version look like Carl Pilkington Kinda?

That may be the case. I still personally find it annoying having the player commenting on things with his own personality and interpetation that may not match my own. That's fine in the Witcher, but I'm not supposed to BE Geralt. The main reason I play Bethesda games is so I can have my own character.

anyway on topic, loving all the news so far, Perk chart is a great improvement, both Beth and Obsidian could not make the system of the old Fallout games work in this action rpg style, so the revamp looks much better, loving the radiant menu.

As for voiced protagonist, finally I say, finally!

I'm thinking what they mean by self narrating is that they will simply comment on things in the game world. Like the sugar bombs and nuka cola in the opening scene of the preview. I doubt that they will go into long yammering speeches about what you're supposed to feel or try to push you to rp a certain character type. "oh no.. I shouldn't have stolen that bb gun from the little kid" "I should probably return this".. "I should probably return this. " [2 days later] "I should probably return this."

I also highly doubt any sort of mod will be able to do anything about the voice. The characters have animations and facial expressions that go with what they are saying..It'd be like removing the voice from the Dragon Age Inquisition. Not really going to change anything except that you won't hear the voice.

Aslong as the comments are neutral and purely observations for example "that group of raiders looks tough" and not "that group of raiders looks tough but I could probably kill them all " then I see no problem.

I'm like what I'm seeing in this bullet lists. And yes that includes the self-narrating protagonist. It's not a major point, and it falls into the "I don't mind it" list.

The part I like in this most is being able to gimp feral ghouls.

From what I'm seeing so far, it plays kind of like Borderlands. Strong emphasis on action, you unlock perks instead of putting points into skills, critical hits are a mini-game, loot items appear above corpses. Well, it is an action RPG, so I suppose that's what's to be expected. If I think of the game along those lines, I'll be satisfied. This doesn't look to be a deep roleplaying experience, but I'll find out when the game is released.

The perks are also ranked so I suppose that could translate into how skilled you are with a certain perk.

Hopefully comments from character are kept to a minimum.

Ideally for me, it would only be when you come across something new, to let unaccustomed players know there's something they can do with that thing- locked door, terminal, mine ("maybe I could disarm that and take it?"). Almost like a tutorial.

Worst case- "ooh, a toy car. If only shaun were still alive." "A clipboard, well I don't have to worry about my finances anymore". "A leaf blower..."

Radial selection of stuff- Fine. Most other games still have them mapped to 1-9 anyway.

Hover over bodies to see what they have - Sure, if it saves pressing buttons to open and close menus. As long as it doesn't mess up the UI.

I'd also like to see some of the more interesting reactions from the character *sees Super Mutant * "what the [censored] is that thing!?"

Normally I prefer Silent Protagonist over voiced but this will be the exception. Also Improved Combat is a big yes.

I am in favor of the changes that have been revealed so far.

As snarky as I am toward the Old Guard, if I see something I don't like I won't defend it. I just haven't found anything that I have a problem with for Fallout 4 so far.

casuals. they want the COD market. they want more money. if FO4 could make more money by putting it exclusively on consoles, they wouldn't hesitate. They would just laugh about it with a dead look in their fish eyes and then kidnap children to sacrifice on their altar to Ba'al and then use the blood to summon Mammon.

News looks good. Hopefully the self-narration is tempered so I don't have to hear the same line 50 times over in an hour.

Love everything that has come out from this, especially the looting and the localization of damage on ghouls. Hopefully something similar can be done to Synths.

The narration makes me just a tad nervous. If done correctly I'll love it. But if not I'll just have to deal with it I guess. I originally hated the idea of a voiced PC but now I really like it so maybe the narration will grow on me.

Kinda like Binary Domain, you shoot of both robotic legs yet the damned thing just crawls on towards you?

Yeah, I remember seeing like the metal fly off when the Synth was shot in the face. Just wanted some solid confirmation like the ghouls!

Yes! That would be awesome.
