Fallout 3 boring?

Post » Sat May 28, 2011 4:17 am

That's probably why I love Bethesda games. Being able to do whatever I want whenever is what really appeals to me.

Same here. Morrowind (my first Bethesda/Sandbox game) was such a memorable and awesome experience for me that I jumped right into the genre and never looked back. What can be better than exploring a totally different universe, meeting the inhabitants and slaying monsters, looting treasures and embarking on quests whenever you want? I can't think of a better concept.

It all makes sense of what are saying and I appreciate? (swede) the replies. Some of you asked why I thought FO3 was boring. Well, first of all I felt it was pretty "lonely". I enjoyed when The brotherhood of steel helped me out in the DC strict. I like the action with someone protecting me and I to could assist them. Is it really allot of this solo playing or can you be in a group or whatever? Thanks for the replies! :)

You can have companions in the game. Some of them make wandering in the wasteland a much better experience. And if you are on the pc you can also download mods that allow you to have as a follower anyone you fancy.

FO3 is probably not the game for you, then.

While there's a main plot to follow in them, the main "selling point" of Bethesda's open-world-style RPGs (Morrowind, Oblivion, Fallout 3) *is* the entire "let's wander over that hill and under that cave just to see what there is to see!"

It's pretty much the best feature of their games.

Morrowind did it right. I think Oblivion did too.
The setting in Fallout 3 doesn't encourage exploration.
Hell, I didn't even dungeon dive in Morrowind. But in Fallout 3? I have -5 dungeon dives.

Fallout 3 doesn't only encourage exploration but unlike Oblivion it makes it interesting and rewarding. Every single location that you explore has its own unique background and story and by the time you leave it you are not left with a couple of spoons and forks.

Well you can only have 1 companion at a time. I think 2 if you get dogmeat. Well it can be boring wandering around sometimes theres hardly any action. I try to look for quest to do that really helps with the boredom factor. Falllout3 doesn't get all that action packed until you find a place full of raiders, ghouls, mirlirks, deathclaws, mutants. Thats the places you have to explore for to get some action going.

How did having 10,000 caves and ruins that were all copied and pasted bits of each other in Oblivion encourage exploration? I found it extremely monotonous and dull since I only remember one of the ruins ever having anything of value inside of it. The rest of them were just diving into the dungeons for it's own sake, I never really came out feeling that I saw something new or found something awesome. Fallout 3 has the most unique and interesting places, each with a history and things to see that help uncover that history. I can explore every last vault and metro and sewer and when I come to the last one I'll still find something that's different whether it be inhabitants, atmosphere, or info on a locked terminal.

That's the whole point of making it big. It can't be balls to the wall action all the time. Item collection and exploration make great RPGs. If it were just linear content, then it would've just been a shooter. Give it some time, I've gone through 7 characters in 18 months and I keep coming back for more. I agree the subways and caves blur together, but the easter eggs like the Jury Street jerky machine, the Vengeance and Jack the Ripper in the Deathclaw Sanctuary, and THOSE and the Tesla Canon quest make for good dungeon dives. You get what you put in, and I've gotten good swag, chems, and sold many well-priced items from dungeons before I let the Enclave loose for high profit goods.

This is complete nonsense. The dungeons in Oblivon are very unique. In no way copied bits. At least as diverse as Fallout 3, I'd say more so with lots of discoveries to be made. I'd cite many, many examples but it's kind of not that relevant to this thread. But if you haven't seen the uniqueness in Oblvion dungeons I recommend trying again, because there are lots of unique and interesting and highly diverse dungeons and dungeon inhabitants in Oblvion. There are several threads on this in the Oblivion forums.

I'm playing Fallout 3 again for the third time. I like it. But there are only about four different settings (wastland, metros, office buildings, city) vs many landscapes and dungeon types in Morrowind and Oblivion.

That said the best think about Fallout 3 I think is exploring. To the OP, if you don't like exploring and being on your own then maybe Fallout 3 is not for you. Maybe try a more linear game like Dragon's Age. Or maybe Oblivion where you can get advancements in Guilds.

Yeah, that. Run around, look in caves/ruins/buildings, find new guns, meet new people, help or kill them...... See what all there is out there to see. :)

(On the other hand..... well, not everyone likes the same stuff. FO3 may just not be your game. It happens.)

From what I understand there is not much to be discovered in terms of weapons and armour and so far I have not come across any battles which I could not win after a few tries and that would definitely require re-thinking/re-making of the character, therefore the incentive to acquire better weapons is not that great. But I am only level 8, it may change later.

LOL, reading the first part of your sentence is how I feel about Fallout, all metro stations are the same, I have not come across any unique weapons, armour, or even materials to build anything unique - anything to keep me doing it again and again for that small chance of getting a good drop. Basically the game lacks in weapons and armour and fighting is a part of it but not the main theme. In this case I would avoid doing side-quests because I will get nothing in the end, for example that completely wasteful Bill Of Rights and Declaration of Independence, took so long to do, and if I were to explore properly it would have taken even more. But the outcome was a joke. You keep discovering the same old junk and all monsters drop same junk, nothing to look forward to, even if they offered a 1/1000 chance.

If that's your only issue with the game, they're easily fixable with mods.

Except for the identical metro stations thing, but seriously - have you been in a metro station? They're all -exactly- the same. Built from the same blueprints.

To be honest, I feel the same way this guy does about Morrowind. There's so little to do, and so much to kill you for doing it. So I just gave up.

I can't tell what I like(d) about this game, but its just so much better then Morrowind.

All in all mate, I would just give it another shot. But I wouldn't play it for hours at a time. For example, most open ended games like this I get bored very easily, so I limit myself to...an hour of game play a day. It takes me much longer to beat it, but it makes the games more....(oh whats the word....) bearable.

I'm glad I got this game. My (now ex) girlfriend told me she watched her ex play it and they hated it. I decided to give it a shot anyway, and I ended up so hooked. It's just so different from anything else out there. My favorite types of games are Final Fantasy types of RPGs, but I also like racing and FPS.

So basically, if you didn't like it the first time, and don't like it now, give it up and find a game that better suits you.

Well normallly I dont like RPG, In fact I generaly hate them, Im much more of a 'Pure FPS' or Tactical style game.
but I game this a fair go, and found I loved it, to me its not just a RPG or FPS and that to me is what got me, plus the fact that im on a PC, which allows me to change the game in almost any way I like.
At the moment im a Raider, (next time I maybe a Slaver [theres evena a MOD that alows me to have a player home at Paradice Falls or alternataly I could be a Enclave Trooper/Black Ops/Commander), getting back-up from Raiders and being able to hang about them/ or as im still low level (playing on very hard, with other mods that make it harder), run to them for help and cover, I could also be a slaver etc or most other faction

So, I guess what im saying is, If you dont like the main story line, like me (can't stand it, for me its soooooooo dull!), I get it over with and then I can play as I want.

I think you get my point, take the game and change what you don't like, Like I said, I dont like the main quest but its very short
and easy to get it over with, then (for me the fun starts) :)

PS Having said all that I hope your on a PC, if not sorry for the wind-up!

In short give it a bit longer, forget the main quest if you like, and do some of the side quests as there, in general, alot more interesting.
I know a lot of you will disagree with me, but for me, this is what's stopped me playing Farcry2 and untill recently Left for Dead.

It can be a great game if you can give it a chance!!

Wastelander12, I'm not sure why you bumped such an old thread, particularly when you're giving advise to someone who hasn't been here for over a month. I think this thread has more than run its course.
