Fallout: Brotherhood of Steel 2 design document leaked

Post » Thu Jan 21, 2010 1:30 pm

Blast from the past:

http://gameoftheart.com/forum/viewtopic.php?p=4914

Ok, so I've been sitting on this for several years now because I didn't know how awesome Fallout really was. I had never played the games, sue me. Er... wait, actually don't sue me.

Most people who follow Fallout know about the canceled version of Fallout 3 codenamed Van Buren, few know about the *other* canceled project, Brotherhood of Steel 2.

It seems Interplay knew the first BoS game wasn't very good. They were using it as a platform to pay for the development costs of the engine and to fund the second game. They went out of business before they were able to execute this plan.

Several years ago, I was given a copy of the design document for this game, the bible on which the game would be based. Now I'm going to share it with the community.

It was actually written by Brian Freyermuth, one of the FO1 designers (who was only a level designer on the first FOBOS) and incorporates some stuff from Van Buren.

I can only imagine how horrible would FOBOS2 have been.

Actually, it looks like it was going to at least be better than the first one. It had some choices and consequences, more use for skills, added stealth, and a better story (partly based on Van Buren and Fallout Tactics 2).

Wow, BOS has a first fan!

Are you kidding? It was horrible for obvious reasons I'm not going to explain.

Anything else positive about the game you might want to add? I don't really fall for graphics if the gameplay is too horrible to mention.

I've never played B.O.S, and have taken a fleeting interest despite it's critical reception :P Who owns the sales rights to that then? If it's Bethesda then I'll pass, they've raked in too much money than they deserve from the franchise based on what they've produced, and I'm boycotting their products until they get their act together :P

Interplay has the rights to sell all past Fallout games, just like with FO1, FO2 and FOT.

For people who don't know, Fallout Tactics: Brotherhood of Steel and Fallout: Brotherhood of Steel have nothing in common aside from title. Completely different game made by completely different people.

Hmm. Correct me if I'm wrong, but weren't they also supposed to make Fallout Tactics 2? Since that at least enjoyed a modicum of success.

F2Tactics whould also be awesome. But, Fo:Bos was not a bad game! It was actually a good hack n' slash, with some minor advortasing for http://www.bawls.com/.

I think I will buy B.O.S. Just out of curiosity. It can't be as good as the Vampire Rain. That game is epic.

Looks like another game (the first one was the Fat Man) was lifted by Bethesda from the FOBOS2 design doc:

Fallout: Brotherhood of Steel 2 would be great. But it was have to be more realistic.

How do we accomplish that, you ask?

More product placement! :D

The Bawls shirt and super-valuable caps were great. But why can't we have more geek chic items? First, Bawls isn't milked enough. We should replace Mentats with Bawls Mints and allow the player character to combine Bawls with the mints. Maybe we can get other brands into the mix, like Monster! SUMO beanbag chairs can provide a "Well Rested"-like bonus! Apple laptops can increase intelligence! iPods can provide a huge charisma boost!
