Fallout 2 bug?

Post » Sat May 28, 2011 2:23 am

I've done some searching but i cant find any info about what seems to be a bug in fallout 2.
I recruited Sulik but after about half way through the toxic caves he seemed to just stop doing anything. he doesn't follow me and will just stay at the entrance to what ever area i go to.
i used my first aid skills on him and it says he seems healthy but when i click on him all i get is the screen to his inventory.
If it helps i'm using the 1.02 patch for the game with a resolution mod. Is there anyway to fix this without restarting the game or should i just kill him and forget about it?

It sounds like he's been flagged dead. I've never known it happen to anyone but your character, but it's completely possible. I'm guessing he hasn't actually died, hence why he still appears as if he's following you from place to place, but his scripting has essentially stopped, and you're searching him when you click on him.

Have you reloaded during combat at all? Have you noticed it happening after a certain combat encounter? Have you tried to actually kill Sulik since he's been flagged?

If he has been flagged dead there's something you can do with your save file and a hex editor. Truth is I know almost nothing about the code and what values and figures interpret into what function. You'd know what I meant if you had the hex editor :P I used it to unflag my character when he was flagged dead, it's an annoying bug.

My suggestion would be to goto the No Mutants Allowed forums and post your query there, and hopefully someone who has some experience with the hex editor will know what code to alter, you'll be able to send them your save game file and they'll be able to do it for you, no hassle. Someone there may even be able to tell you what's wrong, as I might be incorrect in my diagnosis.

Note that you cannot register at NMA with a hotmail account. A gmail account or something similar will suffice.

Is he wearing boots? IIRC outside of combat the NPCs try to avoid walking on the goo if they arent wearing boots.

You can get extra boots

Hmmm, I've just re-read the OPs post and it's sounding alot more like a flagging bug, agent c put a thought in my head. Has Sulik been walking through the goo without boots on? Taking damage? My guess is he is essentially dead, but its in the way he died that might have caused the error, as party NPCs are likely to be killed in combat. I've never had an NPC die on me because of goo, so my experience of this scenario is limited at best.

Yea i took a look at the stuff he was holding and the boots i gave him are not there anymore. Can they melt off? I'm sure i gave him one of my pairs before i went in.
And thanks ill look into NMA and see if they can help.

There is a random chance (which I think is based on luck) that your boots can melt, as can your NPCs.... If you watch the text frame in the bottom left corner, you will see a message if this occurs.

I ususally have my NPCs wait/removed from the party at the start of the tunnel, and then do the rest myself (so I have the spare boots just in case mine, or SMiley's melt).

However, walking on the goo without boots does have an interesting side effect....
