Is Fallout 3 Canon?

Post » Fri May 27, 2011 4:32 pm

I know that this is always an issue when any game is produced, and I'd like to see if I can't get a general (relaitvely unbiased) feeling from the Fallout Vets on this matter.

So, I only want fallout veterns to vote on this matter; since they're the ones who've played Fallout and Fallout2, they know best what the series is about, and would have the most say if something's canon within the series.

This is for my own curiosity than anything else; but it would be nice to keep it in here rather than have the argument spread over 200 threads where the word "canon" pops up...

Fallout 3 is the canon. The rest were rough drafts.

It is the official sequel to the first two, if it were about Mr.Incredible, somebody who can go back in time to save america by eating all of the nukes, it would be canon.

Unfortunately, it's Bethesda who now defines what is and isn't canon, regardless of whether I like it or not, and whether it fits the previous games or not.

If it's about my "personal canon", it includes all of Van Buren, but only parts of Bethesda's Fallout 3 and Fallout Tactics.

There were a lot of Fallout canon things in the classics that I found ridiculous, and I do tolerate pretty much every Bethesda canon bit except the Alien DLC.

Fallout 3 is partially canon to Black Isle's Fallout lore but is fully canon to Bethesda's.

The most recent example is indeed the presence of aliens who are not easter eggs anymore.
In terms of setting, Bethesda's canon is closer to the classics. But when you dig deeper in Fallout 3's lore, you uncover Bethesda's canon, not Black Isle's.

It's Bethesda's lore now, for better or worst.

Giant robots....

as opposed to mutant super soldiers, robot dogs, friendly zombies, futuristic knights with power armor, and man-sized killer mole rats?

Well... Bethesda own the franchise now, so anything they say is canon is canon. That is just the way it is.

I picked the second option. I can't say I'd agree with everything they did, but I was happy with it for the most part. For the most part, the biggest gripes I would have is a lack of explanation of certain things (what the Supermutant "plan" is, for example. Or how Jet got all the way to the East Coast - especially considering I shut down their operation in Fallout 2...)

On the other hand - it's not like I thought they weren't going to make some changes to the lore. It's their game now, and they had their own ideas on the direction the series was going to go. I highly doubt I would have agreed with everything regardless of what they were going to do with it.

I also consider it as canon.

Although we may find one or another thing to be out of place in comparison to the original games , the overall game was done with due respect to the canon and passion for the Fallout franchise.
The people at Bethesda put a lot of heartblood and respect for the other games into it.

Lets be honest, when Fallout 2 was released , not everone felt it really lived up to the atmosphere or storyline of F1 either. But in the end people got along with it.

Fallout 3 is canon. There is room for improvement in matters of staying true to the canon, ok thats true.

There should be another option:

Fallout 3 is cannon on the X360 and PC with Broken Steel, not on the PS3.

Not a moan but a valid point I think.

But PS3 is getting Broken Steel so your point is not valid.

As I've already stated, nothing can be considered canon until a sequel has been made which builds upon choices and changes of a previous one. So only a.) the Brotherhood and b.) destruction of the Enclave is canon, if we rule out the possibility of some meteor dropping on the Beth HQ and someone else going on with the series. ^_^

Fallout 3 is not the first game to have Aliens as a random encounter.

though the new DLC does sound rather silly.

get over it fallout fans! the dev. team has changed, so you can't expect the same atmosphere! even Black isle couldn't make FO2 Like FO1, so how do we expect "another" developer to do that?
i my self love FO3 more than the other sequels...

There were no true sequels to Fallout 1 and 2. Excluding Fallout 3, if you count that.

I voted for two, I thought Bethesda made a lot of stupid decisions with Fallout 3 but it's still good enough to be considered canon.

Well, of course not everyone is going to be happy with some of Beth's decisions for FO3. Regardless, they did a pretty good job with it and would consider the events that enfolded in Vanilla to be canon. As for Broken Steel, we shall see, I haven't played it yet, so I can't judge quite yet.

As for people complaining about BoS being the "good guys," it's not so black and white. There are still a bunch of people in their ranks that don't like Lyons decision, but didn't have the balls to join the Outcasts. Some like to take pot shots at ghouls, probably for entertainment or racism. And we still have the Outcasts, self-exiled BoS who still keep to their mission, and plan on getting back at Lyons. If anything, it adds more flavor to the BoS from the west coast, making them not JUST gray, but other shades as well. If they had been kept the same as west coast, some people may complain that it's Beth trying to make FO3 too much like FO1&2.

Unfortunately yes it is canon now but that leaves some holes to be filled. There are debates going on as to what fits. And beth left it vague enough that it answers some things not others. The debate going on about how FEV got to Vault 87 is a good example of a hole that needs filling because at its current point F1, and F2 state that FEV never left the East coast, but its in Fallout 3 so how did it get there? And thats is just one hole to be filled.
