Fallout 4 crash in specific area

Post » Fri Nov 27, 2015 8:51 am

We will see, to me it looks like something that can be fixed with a patch and i can now enter those areas.

If not then at least patch it so I know this wont happen again so I can remake a guy.

I did not save Strong in my first playthrough, but I suppose I can go right at it.

Oh, well, its probably not that then. Damn, can you think of any differences between your corrupted save and your new one? If you've played 32 hours on your new save then i'm considering just finding the latest uncorrupted save that i can and restarting from there. :(

I guess the more people that restart the better the chance that one of us will find what is causing the corruption.

I did a lot of Minutman quests before going with the main quest, and a lot of random quests I had found in the wasteland.
And indeed. The more people restarting and going through the paces, the better the odds.

It could be any number of them, that causes something.

I am going to save Strong right now.

Perhaps I will start Minutman quests again afterwards.

I also noticed that if I lower item/actor/object fade range I can proceed further into the area. That means the CTD is somewhat related to some corrupt mesh/texture/audio or a broken script from something that spawns inside the area. Also, since it's the same place in every playthrough (west of the gas station where you find Dogmeat) I guess it isn't related to some random encounter.

Here is a thought: considering that there is probably only a few hundred of us that are experiencing this glitch out of millions that bought the game, it must be something rather obscure that is causing it. And since we have no clue when bethesda will patch it, and since it seems unlikely that the patch will uncorrupt our saves, I am just going to bite the bullet and restart from an old save.

To those of us restarting, be sure to make new saves often, and check back on the crash area every hour or two.

Perhaps i'll be able to find some possible causes when i go checking thru my saves when i get home tonight. I have a habit of making new saves often so who knows, i might find a difference between one that works and the next one that doesn't.

Good luck guys.

That is not the area we are discussing at the moment. We are talking about the area east of C.I.T containing Monsignor Plaza, Cambridge Crater and Greentech Genetics - at least, this is the area I have been refearing too all along, and also the area in the OP.

On another note, saved Strong and was still able to travel into the area.

Yeah most of us have been referring to the area in the OP, but apparently some people are also crashing near sanctuary area now as well. Who knows if the cause for the ctds are the same.

One area at a time. I should have said that. :P

Regardless. Saved Strong and were able to walk into the area.

Anything else that comes to your mind, K_Lou?
Otherwise, I suppose I could start Minutmen, but darn, I don't wanna do all those "Save this settlement over there" again. :P

Not much i can think of right now, i'll have a better idea of possible causes once i get home and go thru my saves. That won't be for another 5 or 6 hours though. I believe i had done maybe the first 3 save this settlement quests when i first encountered the crash area, i hadnt retaken the castle yet though.

Does any one know of any tools, maybe mod type tools, that we could use to take a look at this? I tried enabling some logging in the ini that I pulled from skyim, script logging, but it didn't really seem to do much. Specifically this:

Open Skyrim.ini (My Documents/My Games/Skyrim) and add the following to it:

[Papyrus]
fPostLoadUpdateTimeMS=500.0
bEnableLogging=1
bEnableTrace=1
bLoadDebugInformation=1

I feel like, if we had a way to track what objects are being loaded (based on what sul9 said about the distance affecting crash distance), we might be able to do something via the console to just disable the thing causing the crash, and have a better workaround.

All that'll track is objects that are controlled by scripts. Anything that's just placed in the world in a more general manner won't turn up on that trace log.

(Also, may I say, DEAR CHRIST I hope they've fixed all the issues Papyrus caused in Skyrim. That [censored] was unacceptable.)

I don't plan on starting a new game. Im just going to do other quests and if bethesda fixes it good, if not ill use console commands to do the parts in those areas. BTW I saved strong and had no problems, i did few minute men missions, i joined the Bos early and my companion was Hancock if any of this helps and i did the salem mission.

Well - I for one, am going to bed. Need to "fix" my sleep schedule.
Keep the post updated with what you find, please.

I will go through Minutmen quests when I wake up, and post my findings.

think back, have you commited any evil deeds against steam?

buy a cheap game for 25% off? leave a bad review on half life? not buy a hat on team fortress 2?

I went back and found the last working save file I had, and compared it to the next save file (which has the crash). Unfortunately there's about 6 hours of gameplay in between those saves so it isn't very specific, but here are the quests that were different between the two saves. Note that this isn't all the active/completed quests, just the ones that are _different_ between the two saves.

New active quests in the corrupted save:

Public Knowledge
Trouble Brewin'
The Glowing Sea
Tradecraft

New completed quests in the corrupted save:

Getting a Clue
Reunions
Shadow of Steel
Dangerous Minds
Tour of Duty
Show No Mercy

So if this bug is quest related, it is something in one of those quests.

When I had to do the silver shroud it sent me to that area, and it was bugging out.

I couldn't approach the npc, but if i sniped over at them to pull them out towards me it worked fine.

Then I had the quest marker for "search for clues" that was bugged...

This bug screwing up cambridge messes up one of the final quests "nuclear option" AND an earlier quest. You cannot run to get back to the mission... as it goes through cambridge AGAIN. I wish someone would post a teleport code to skip that area just like the genetic teleport code in the OP.

So obnoxious. Not restarting and not losing 30+ hours (bug at 45 hours in and 60 hours in? thx)
