Fallout 4 crash in specific area

Post » Fri Nov 27, 2015 11:12 am

It's possible that we would have to start over due to having saved a world state that doesn't work. My theory is that the world state changes to something they didn't account for in development. (For an example: You are supposed to meet a quest giver that has died, conflict has been created, crash - or it tries to spawn a quest giver that hasn't been generated by a world state due to having already completed, or not already having completed a certain quest.)

I just hope they fix it in such a way that the fix is retroactive.

It appears that there's a time mismatch when a crash happens (Log says the most recent thing was 3 minutes prior to the actual time of crash) ... I'm guessing this occurs due to the log still catching up to the game, but the additional data is lost. My suggestion here would be to sit outside the crash area for 2-3 minutes, then crawl forward into it, to attempt to get an accurate log - working on doing that now myself.

Bah, here's where I crashed last time, not doing it this time. http://i.imgur. com/P23zYTC.png

Edit: I have found that doing a game integrity check helps with crash frequency. It'll start crashing again shortly, but it allows entry into crashy areas most of the time, for me. You have to re-do graphics settings each time, but else it's only a 5 minute irritation.

It claims to not download anything, but i'm wondering if assets are actually getting corrupted. If we want to start posting saves to check out one another's game states, i'd be happy to load up an area and see if I crash in whichever area you're crashing.

Not yet, turning on logging (see my posts above) seeeems to help somewhat? Lags the game though (I think that's part of what helps) ... I seem to be having some luck doing frequent game integrity checks in steam. I've gotten through some of the major crash areas with this.

They probably know, but it IS the weekend, and they DID just spend 8 years worth of overtime developing it. Personally, i'm fuming that this is happening, but there's nothing to be done about it. Keep posting about it, be as specific as you can with details as to where the crashes are occuring. Fill out the gamesas help thing, submit your dxdiag file, give them as much info as you can. Such things are enormously helpful when diagnosing / tracking this type of bug.

I agree it's frustrating, however we have found work arounds, they certainly are not ideal but they do exist.

Hi everyone, sorry to hear you're all having the same problem, it really really svcks but cheers for contributing. Hopefully Bethesda knows about this bug and can patch is soon :/

Cheers dude, I thought it'd have the same ID and ID. I'll update OP.

aweeesome, updated OP. we've done a lot of these damnn workarounds now ahaa

I have an Nvidia card and it crashes but PS4 users are also having the crash.

Well whats the worse that an happenloljk

But it does seem something happens to the area which causes the crash as a quest that changes the area stops the crash and tha does too.

If you experience a bug, type in sqt to find the codes for all of your quests. you will need to figure out which one is which for they will be represented by codes such as inst301 and stuff, no actual names.

I have compiled a list of who gives what quests, and what the code for each faction is so far SPOILERS.

Spoiler
BOS- Brotherhood of steel

Minrecruit- minute men settlement assistance/ally mission.

inst- institute mission

instm- (maybe) institute misc mission.

Im really curious about what causes this issue. I dont know about you fellas but I did a lot of messing around with the console to change the FOV, I doubt that would cause this though. Also, are we sure this isn't a game save issue? I just finished playing for 2 or 3 hours with this whole silver shroud bug. I dont want to use a console to progress in that quest. The thing is will a patch fix the bug? Wasn't there an issue prior to the latest version where people were crashing around sanctuary?

To add to that, you can use these steps to skipparts/moveto quests;

to get a location to teleport to in a quest use player.sqt This'll show you all your active quests, it can be a pain to go through them unfortunately

On the console screen, it'll have a reference and a load door key. you can use player.moveto thecode example: player.moveto 000F492Fe thats a made up code

if the objective is outside then you might need to complete the objective instead, you can use player.sqs questId (the quest id is in player.sqt, current quest: IDHERE)

That'll show all the steps of the quest you have to do, you can then use player.setstage QUESTID STAGEID to complete that stage, might take a few tries to complete the correct stage

You can use completequest QUESTID to complete a quest.

Hopefully that makes sense and can help you, if you do find a workaround we'd love to hear it!

That's copied from a post I replied to so i apologize if it's a little messy

It seems to be a issue with the area (mentioned that few posts above). If it is then changing the area stops the crash so a patch should fix the problem :) People have had it on consoles as well so it shouldn't be your FOV modifing as I haven't done that yet.

yeah, my quests look basically the same now as the corrupted 9 hour save and i can still access the area, so i don't think a quest triggers it.

read the thread, dude. from what we can tell a save gets messed up somehow in that it causes something to spawn in that area that causes a crash.

basically we all have two options as far as continuing playing the game:

either you continue on your save that causes a crash and use workarounds and hope that when bethesda patches this you won't have to restart from a uncorrupted save anyway (and nobody knows when there will be a patch because bethesda can't even come into this thread to comment on the issue).

or you find the latest save you have that allows you to access the area and restart from there, making new savefiles often so you have something to fall back on if it happens again.

if anybody chooses to restart, in order to check which save is crash free i'd recommend fast traveling to a nearby location to the crash area, opening up the console and put it "TCL" which lets you walk in the air, and then "player.setav speedmult 500" which will make you 5x as fast, and then just run straight to the crash area and see what happens. once you find a good save i'd recommend doing this every hour or so to be sure it doesnt get [censored] up again.

however some people are crashing in different areas now so you may find out after going back to an old save and a different area gets bugged.

also i want to remind anybody reading this thread to report the issue using bethesda's feedback link in the OP.

Pretty much the perfect description of whats going on.

Lovin the profile picture dude hahahaa. I wanted to link that video in OP but i just knew somebody might take it out of context to think we're ripping on the game. This bug can svck it tho

I think most of us sent Bethesda a feedback thing, I guess they have lots of them but it does seriously stuck we paid money to not play a game without crashing. Just acknowledgement of this thread/bug from them would be enough.

Love the name btw ahahaa

I bet you are curious. I know I replied to you before but I needed to make that one terrible joke. Did I not get the memo about funny names? god damnnit, i feel so out of place

I wonder what happens if you enter this very same area with an uncorrupted savegame. Does it register a new area or something? Is there a certain range at which objects in the game spawns?

I think we should apply those log settings and compare the logs in the end, see if there's a correlation.

I crash when i go to the area around Hubris comics while trying to do the quest "Curtain call". Haven't crashed anywhere apart from that area atm. Will try to upload dxdiag as soon as I can.

I decided to register and share my observations, hello everybody.

So we have crash, place - Chares View Amphitheater, Emogene Takes a Lover quest.

Tried some crazy things like going there naked, w\o sound, in full screen with low graphics and so on....crash crash crash.

Then I started to look at my early saves, I save game a lot. Unfortunately, the closest is not broken is almost 5 hours ago, not so bad considering 3d11h total(Yes I play F4 almost 24\7 :)).

So we have

3d6h37m save - crash

3d5h51m save - mo crash

As you can see it's a very little gap, less than hour, more importantly - this hour is just after i finished BoS introduction, I took Learnng Curve(Corvega Assembly Plant) and second Quatermastery(Greater Mass)+Cleansing(Four Leaf Fishpacking) side quests. Somewhere in the next 2 hours I found Cabot House and this entire storyline with Emogene and Amphitheater. So last time I did BoS side quests and despite those quests pretty far they still somehow broke my savegame, and it is happend in 50minutes time frame.

All in all in this 50 minutes I visited Country Crossing, Greater Mass Blood Clinic, Four Leaf Fishpacking Plant, Nordhagen Beach, Cabot House, Parsons State Insane Asylum, place with racing robots, forget it's name and maybe few more, still it's only 50 minutes. Now I will try to do every quest I did first time but I will go to Chares View Amphitheater after every quest update to check, maybe I can catch this f....piece of codfe that broke my save.

For now maybe my observations will help someone. I'll write later after I do all(that I remembered) quests from the first try.

I don't think it has anything to do with those quests and it definitely has nothing to do with graphics settings.

this forum also just went from 80 people reading it to 305 in 10 minutes so thats a thing apparently

I would be interested in seeing if peoples' saves crash for others. I'd be willing to load up someone's save file and attempt to load a crashtastic area - that might tell us if it's the save itself that's corrupted, or the world state. I'm beginning to suspect that game files themselves may be becoming corrupt, as i've had SOME luck doing file integrity checks via steam.

We've tried this, people have sent save files to each other to see if it'll crash and with people on consoles also getting this it seems the area has some error with it which causes a crash.

We've tried that with the Morsignor/C.I.T/Cambridge (what this thread it about) area though, people have also said they're crashing around Sacturary as well. Some people are even crashing every 5 minutes, now that must super svck.

Yep, I have a list of about 12 locations that i'm crashing at, although I can continue playing in those areas after doing a file integrity check, the crashes always return. I didnt know that people had traded saves already though, blah.

Spoiler

So....

1. Learnng Curve

Amphitheater->Corvega Assembly Plant->Prydwen->Amphitheater = All Clear.

2. Feeding the Troops

Amphitheater->County Crossing->Prydwen->Amphitheater = All Clear.

3. Quartermastery

Amphitheater->Greater Mass Blood Clinic->Cambridge Police Station->Amphitheater = All Clear.

4. Cleansing the Commonwealth

Amphitheater->Four Leaf Fishpacking Plant->Cambridge Police Station->Amphitheater = All Clear.

5. Ghoul Problems

Amphitheater->Nordhagen Beach->National Guard Training Yard->Nordhagen Beach->The Slog->Amphitheater = All Clear.

So these quests are ok. I will start Cabot House line, maybe 1st quest in this storyline is broken. I did nothing else the first time, exept spent maybe +- 1 hour after 1st quest rearanging my power armor warehouse, after that I went Emogene Takes a Lover and it was broken...Todd wtf is going on?!

Okay so so far I get crashing when trying to do Hunter/Hunted and Boston after Dark. I've narrowed down the first save in which the crashing next to the CIT ruins occurs and compared it to the save before (Only in terms of quests at the moment).

The save where it first occurs is at 18h 17m playtime while the previous save is 17h 49m playtime. The quest differences are as follows (hopefully not spoilery):

In Progress:

  • Curtain call (investigate radio broadcast)
  • Troubled waters (travel to Graygarden)

Completed:

  • Kidnapping at county crossing

Christ, I can't wait for the next patch. I'm dying to play the game, but I can't without all of my stuff at Sanctuary.

Bethesda, hurry up please. Or release some sort of tool to edit scripts so we can fix it ourselves.
