Fallout 4 crash in specific area

Post » Fri Nov 27, 2015 4:06 am

Not to sure but I did change the difficulty of my game after an hour or so and only noticed the bug when I was doing the Quartermaster quest. Earliest save I had was after taking the Quatermaster quest so most likely the trigger was before then.

Did the camera mode test and able to enter the area while in that model but try as the character and the game crashes.

Tried the Revertworld option which fixed the issue but rather not use that as a fix since I don't know if it will impact my game long term.

Change graphics options etc and still crashes so looks like the zone or player character has a corrupted block.

Hopefully this will be patched soon since the quests in that area are pilling up.

I changed the difficulty a few times during my playthrough.

Tried out survival, went back to normal then settled on hard, could this be the thing we all have in common?

Edit:words

Throwing in my lot here with you guys. Every time I try to clear the rendezvous zone in Boston After Dark, the game immediately crashes with no message. Same thing when I'm at C.I.T.

Pretty annoying because I'm sick of doing repeatables and wanted to get on with the main storyline. Now I can't. Been over a week now with no response from the devs. That's disappointing. I hope it gets more exposure from media outlets.

And big ups to JoeBBBB for organizing all this, along with everyone contributing!

I didnt change my difficulty at all and still have the issue. So I very much doubt it has to do with that.

You don't miss much with the workarounds. I suggest using them until a patch comes out.

I have been following this and I had a thought. It may be nothing...but before I did a few quests I was out exploring. I wandered around Cambridge Crater and that area and there was a triggered event, a Green Meteorite. So I am curious, for those crashing, have you had this event happen yet?

It just struck me as odd as looking into it that meteorite appears to be triggered in that area. So it could be a reason for the crash. Just a thought...toodles.

I hear some claims that this bug is supposed to be very rare but I have it too and there seems to be lots and lots of threads about it on the net. I think many of the crash reports are related to this, people just don't know what to google for to find this thread for example. Me myself got stuck on the Silver Shroud quest getting to Northy around 50 hours into the game. Never had a crash before this point.

This is not the cause, I have never touched difficulty and still get the crash. Just want to rule that out.

Ah alright. Then it's probably just quest/progress related. Would be weird, but not impossible, if the game had issues with people following sidequests before they go on mainquests.

is there a save game viewer for fallout 4 yet?

edit: well, found one. http://www.nexusmods.com/fallout4/mods/838/?

anyone can provide two saves, where one is non-corrupt and one is corrupt?

edit2: took a look at the data, uuuhm well, probably, the "easiest" way would be to export the save data into a non-binary format aka a text file and then run a diff tool, because comparing the values with two save game editors in parallel is even more nuts (I just tried that).

New to this forum/thread , but I see most people are talking about crashes after 10's of hours.

I get a constant CTD as I approach Corvega Assembly Plant as part of the "The First Step" mission. So about 4 hours in.

Doesn't matter what I do, how I approach it , it always crashes.

Hope this is fixed soon...

1) do you get an error message, a hang up, etc.? how exactly does it crash to desktop?

2) are other areas affected too? did you try to approach from another direction?

please keep the save. Maybe it is related, maybe not, it is a different area, but maybe the C.I.T. ruins area is just the most common area for this overall bug to occur.

You're not wrong there, I leave this tab open in the event I have something to contribute; which I really don't :(. The only things I've found are thus:

1) Quest items are not a factor. I spent time going through each that I had, finding the ID, and removing it from my inventory. I thought maybe there was some type of interaction in some way. There wasn't xD.

2) I also spent some time in no clipping mode to see if there's a vertical high or low where there may be a way to pass over or under the area 'trigger' that makes the game crash; and it seems the answer is no. Whatever 'trigger' it is, I spent about a minute going in both directions and flying over/under and it did not work. Makes sense I guess.

3) And if it wasn't already obvious, it definitely has to do with the player character itself and not the camera, since if I toggle freefly camera, I can freely go past the points that crash me.

Also note basic obvious console command resets (aside form revertworld, as people have noted) do nothing. ie. resetAi, sixchanges, perk levels, SPECIAL levels, etc.

The funny thing is...it's probably some arbitrary choice we all made, like, nose size that causes something to just break. In which case, debugging this will be next-to-impossible. This, of course, coming from my complete lack of all knowledge in programming :).

Thanks for your hard work Joe, and everyone else contributing.

At this point, I don't even care if the end-result is all current saves are compromised. I just want to know what the bug is, that it's fixed, and no one else will have to suffer such agony. Men in Black taught me bugs are bad...plagues of the Universe. :chaos:

No error msg, just drops me to desktop, maybe there's a slight graphic stutter just before I see the desktop, now that I think about it.

This is the only area I've had the issue with, mind you I haven't been wandering all over the map, so I haven't really been many other places.

I have tried approaching from all angles, doesn't make any difference.

I'll hold onto the save...

I didn't have issues with Corvega at first, but after arcjet(where my problem started) i can't approach corvega either(and many other places) without a CTD. It's a common bug, but there really doesn't seem to be any correlation with the time/quest/etc. If we knew what everyone did before this happens then we could find a common event. It could even be a perk for all we know as i don't think everyone here even played on survival.

Ahh well seems you've tried a lot! I've seen all these other bugs where people have tried all these little things then I see this thread where people have tried everything from going through the whole game logging and changing little things like six via console and its crazy we seem we've learnt nothing despite the crazy effort and hard work everybody had put in hahaha.

When creating my character I just changed the eye colour and beard, I really liked the default :D ahaha, I did get a haircut doe to show HOW ROUGH IT IS IN THE WASTELAND; i'm wierd like that.

sounds like our bug, but different location, so probably it isn't even area based!

do you have an earlier save? because for some people that fixed the problem, furthermore if you do and it is "non-corrupted" we would have two early-game saves that are corrupted and non-corrupted that could make finding the problem easier, because there is less data to look at.

To me it sounds like a quest related problem indeed. Bethesda should know what is being triggered when you enter that area and can probably narrow it down to a handful of possible causes to investigate.

When I have some time, (tonight?) I'll have a play with some older saves I have to see if I can find a non corrupted one.

Programming isn't actually as bad as that :P
If nose size was the cause, the debug trace would lead to, or near to, that discovery.

And in such obscure scenarios, the solution is rarely go fix that specific problem, but to fix the reason it was a problem in the first place (like your facial expressions sharing memory with the weather).

Therefore indirectly fixing a multitude of bugs not yet seen.

Actually tried my own saves a bit. Weirdest thing. Loaded a save pre-BoS-meet, crashes on quick travel. Loaded a save near BoS, loads up fine. Loaded my latest save, crashed on loading, then didn't the next time i loaded it.

It's like at a certain point after you do XYZ, something in the corefiles of the game itself change, affecting all saves/gameplay.

Haven't tried a new game yet, could probably godmoe myself towards the problem area(takes a moment to do though).

Edit: ofcourse worth noting that it's most likely not a user-side issue as i clocked 30h+ into the game without problems, so things like memory/gpu/cpu/hickerysticks can be ruled out.

Fitting to the theme, while we wait for a patch etc, i'm taking the nuclear option; saved/screenshots backed up, deleting all content and reinstalling + restarting(i don't mind, it's fun for me, especially now that i know how the game works different to fallout 3/NV ;)). If nothing else i'll have a huge save databank if this happens again as i always newsave things. Probably won't happen before the patch hits, but it's win/win anyway.

I play on Survival and have never changed difficulties...so iunno..I've never thought it was area based because it's a whole slew of areas. I'm pretty sure it's a specific set of scripting they share.
