Fallout 4 crashes after I press "play" on the launch

Post » Sun Jan 17, 2016 8:32 am

This is the first time I'm running Fallout 4 in my new computer and it keeps crashing after the launcher. My laptop can run it though, even if it barely fits the requirements.

I've tried verifying integrity, updating drivers, redownloading fallout 4, running as admin, run using borderless window. nothing seems to work

Here's my dxdiag if it helps:

And, have you updated to SP1?

Also your drivers are a bit old too...

I don't think it's a driver issue, they really aren't that old.

What else is installed on the machine? Did you build this? Or buy it already built/loaded? Where is steam installed?

location of steam "C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam"

Other programs installed are Norton Security, Google Chrome, and the drivers and programs that come with the Video Card (GeForce Experience & ThunderMaster).

I bought it as a set but changed the Video Card to a GTX 960 and the HDD from 500 GB to 1TB

After your SP1 upgrade, you can get the latest graphic driver from Nvidia http://www.nvidia.com/download/driverResults.aspx/96877/en-us

Days before FO4 was released, Nvidia released a driver that was optimized (that's what they claim) for FO4 ...

Would Windows 10 be better than a Service Pack 1 update? It's ready for a windows 10 upgrade.

I think its better to go Windows 10. It comes with DirectX12 and ultimately games will be released for that. Future-proof ...

I would suggest, if you get it to work with W7 just leave it that way.

New problems can arise, especially if you upgrade to W10.

Just update W7 with SP1, make the required restarts - make a clean installation of your drivers with the link posted above, and hopefully Fallout 4 will start.

After all this, delete all ini files in those two folders:

C:\Users\[Your Username]\Documents\My Games\Fallout4

C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Fallout 4

...and verify your game cache files again through steam.

Start a new game, and don't put your "older" save files from your laptop in there. (at least not until the game starts normally)

It was risk but I finally got it to work. I upgraded to Windows 10. I didn't even need to run it on borderless or verify game. Thanks for all your help.
