Fallout 3 Fallout.ini Configuration troubles

Post » Fri Nov 18, 2011 8:02 am

Ive been tweaking with the .INI file of fallout 3, and i cant seem to get a peg on what will make everything the fastest for my computer.

my sony vaio e series laptop specs are:

Intel@Core i5-2430 Processor (2.40GHz/3.00 GHz with turbo boost)

Genuine Windows 7 Professional 64-bit

17.3 LED backlit display 1600 x 900

NVIDIA GeFORCE 410 (1GB) dedicated Graphics

750GB (5400rpm) hard drive

8GB 4GBx2 DDR3-SDRAM-1333

Blu-ray disc player

Large Lithium-ion battery (7950mAh)

What can i tweak the INI file to, so that i gain the best performance, but my graphics are still good?

If i cant get the INI file up to speed, then my game is just very slow, and jumpy.

Have you tried FSR? fallout stutter remover. Try turning the settings down. The 410 is a weak card so it wont be able to handle much.

Yeah, ive got FSR in there.

I think i gave you the wrong card info though.

it might be an AMD Radeon HD 6470M.

I dont really have a great way of finding my computer specs.

See what baffles me, is that interiors are A-okay, When i look directly up, no lag, when i look directly down, no lag, but when i look at eye level or around eye level outdoors, i get massive stuttering and lag.

What baffles me is that i can turn my quality settings up to max, modify the .INI to max out the graphics, and everything works Just fine and dandy except for the outside eye level.

Im sensing there's a problem there, i just cant figure out WHAT.

I also tried lowering the graphics levels, nothing better.

Post a dxdiag report.

Click the Windows Orb, in the search bar type: dxdiag
When the program finishes, click the Save All Information button. This will save a dxdiag.txt to the desktop (or My Documents). Find the file and copy & paste its contents here in a post. Everything please.

Ahh it is a 6470 then, the reason from lagging at eye level is because that is the point when the game does the most rendering through your card. When your outside try PCB in the command box to clear the cache to see if it helps at all. Its only a temporary measure though.

Purging the cell buffers through the command line does nothing :(

Hmm, i would download a program called FRAPS if you havent already to measure your fps. Then first leave the .ini and play around with the game settings, turn AA off etc, and try to get the fps to atleast 30 Everywhere, inside outside etc. Once you have 30fps start turning the settings up untill it starts going below that. Then you can start twidlling your ini. (in your My Games folder! not the fallout 3 directory!)

These would be the ones to play with:

bBackgroundLoadLipFiles=1

bLoadBackgroundFaceGen=1

bBackgroundCellLoads=1

bLoadHelmetsInBackground=1

iBackgroundLoadLoading=1

bBackgroundPathing=1

bBackgroundNavmeshUpdate=1

bCloneModelsInBackground=1

All of the above options relate to background loading to attempt to smooth FPS and reduce stutter. I recommend setting them all to =1 if they aren't already. At worst this will do no harm, and at best it may reduce stuttering and improve performance (Fallout.ini).

bUseThreadedBlood=1

bUseThreadedMorpher=1

bUseThreadedTempEffects=1

bUseThreadedParticleSystem=1

bUseThreadedAI=1

bUseMultiThreadedFaceGen=1

bUseMultiThreadedTrees=1

bMultiThreadAudio=0

iNumHavokThreads=5

All of the above variables relate to the use of the GameBryo engine's multithreading capabilities. Multithreading splits tasks into 'threads' where possible, and runs them in parallel across the cores of multi-core CPUs to potentially improve performance. Fallout 3 is already multi-threaded by default, however by enabling all these options you may gain additional performance if you run a multi-core CPU. In my testing I didn't see a dramatic improvement in CPU usage across both cores by enabling these options, nor an increase in FPS, but by the same token it can't hurt to enable them in case they provide marginal improvement. Note however that I found that setting bMultiThreadAudio=1 would cause a freeze upon exiting the game every time, so you may wish to keep this variable disabled for that reason. Indeed if you find you're having any other new problems after applying the above tweaks then revert them all to their original values as part of your troubleshooting (Fallout.ini).

bUseBackgroundFileLoader=0 - This variable may improve stuttering performance on some machines if set to =1, but in the past in games like Oblivion, it was known to cause issues on some machines. In my testing in Fallout 3 it seems to have no negative impacts, however experiment with it first and if in doubt, leave it at =0 (Fallout.ini).

Update: Some dual core and quad core CPU users have said that by inserting a new command iNumHWThreads=2 under the General section of Fallout.ini, and setting it to a value of 1, 2 or 4 (typically 2), this prevents freezing at certain points in the game. In practice this setting should not be required, as it appears to restrict the number of threads used by the game, however you can experiment with different values depending on how many cores of your CPU you want the game to use.

I was wrong apparently.

Im still having massive problems with getting it right.

ive been using the INI tweak guide, and i downloaded FRAPS.

The most fraps i seem to be able to get, with everything at its lowest is 12.

and this is still just the eye-level stutter/lag problem.

What the heck is going on?

now its not making any sense.

I tried turning everything off except fallout 3, still slow as heck.

So i had a bunchload of internet pages open, some msn conversations and now its running 100% fine.

That makes no sense.

I shouldent have to open a bunch of programs to make fallout 3 go fast.

Tried using Windows Live Removal mod.

Makes everything work like a freakin charm for about 30 seconds into the game untill it downright freezes and crashes.

How can i fix this?

it seems like the Windows Live Removal mod might be my only awnser here.
