Fallout 1 vs Fallout 2

Which do you think is better, and why. In my opinion, the maturity, polish, and charming wit sealed the deal for me, although FO1 was great as well.

What do you guys think?

Tough one but i choose Fallout 2, Fallout 1 was great but the extra content gives it that extra boost.

But then again the Fallout 1 story was better than the second i think. hmm :|

I'm not sure now.. ive manged to convince myself that both are amazing.

I'll go with Fallout 2 for now until i read more posts.

Fallout 1

In Fallout 2, I didn't like the over-the-top pop culture references. Some I didn't get (read: understand) until years later. For example the Tardis. I didn't watch Doctor Who, nor did I know it existed prior to the recent series.

While the graphics were better, I just loved the feeling of exploring the new world in FO1. I mean everything was new. Talking to NPCs, the history, the mechanics, just everything.

In FO2, I was more familiar with everything and I would have prefer the PC NOT to be related to my FO1 character. But what's done is done. There wasn't as much exploring compared to FO1. The area while changed a bit, was fairly familiar. Besides the Enclave "space program" or whatever, never "felt right". I mean I know it's a game and all. But it felt like something was missing in that whole story. Vault Dweller #0024

Fallout 1 had the best story line by far and it was only surpassed in game play by Fallout 2. The game mechanics of Fallout 2 I enjoyed more.

I loved the simplicity of Fallout 1, and how you could finish the game with an overall great character without having to gain as many levels. Of course, simple isn't always great, and that is why I also love the long gameplay that Fallout 2 has. Story-wise, Fallout 2 has a more intricate story that has complexity surrounding it, especially with the various endings for each town (which were a pain in the @SS if you ask me, but that also rendered it a sense of rpg-ism) and the new "setting" (albeit, at a further date than the first one, which was soon after, if not almost immediately, after the war in 2077). I'm pretty sure that the makers gathered for a few months to come up with the new story, which added different elements based on what they thought was happening elsewhere around the southwest region of the US at the time [of the game].

Gameplay-wise both were great. Fallout 1 had less stuff to play around with, but delivered a great gameplay nevertheless. Fallout 2, on the other hand, had tons of new stuff for one to mess around with, and create diverse characters (much like an mmorpg would offer now, except in Fallout 2 there's no online play!). I will continue my reply at a later time, since I have a lot to write about and it might seem too big for just one reply, hehehe. :D

I will say one more thing: all in all, both games were awesome, and should be on everyone's library of owned games. ;)

Fallout to me was a game of Surival, because thats all the people seemed to be doing.

Fallout 2 to me was a game of hope, with new civilisations clearly taking shape and place.

Fallout 2's interface was better, but there's something to be said for the hopelessness of FO1.

Seeing some of the replies i have to agree that Fallout 1 was the better game, i only wish it had the same mechanics as Fallout 2. I heard there was a project to do so a while ago though?

The story was a bit more linier i guess in a way but it was still good enough to totally get into and not forget what you are actually doing. e.g. the note on how long to get the water chip was a great constant reminder on what your mission was.

Also Fallout 2 did have a lot of pop culture stuff that i didn't get but then again it had a lot i did get which was damn good.

Overall i think Fallout 1 was more serious which made me think yeah im really in a post apoc world and my character has no idea what its like so i have to survive and somehow manage to get a water chip, which at first i dont know where the hell it is and times running out.

Great concept to a game. :)

I think Fallout 1 felt more mythical. Like the reality of what was happening didn't necessarily matter yet it was realistic. A lot more levels were like a good horror movie than a hard video game level.

Somehow the story telling just dug deeper and ended with something that was truly inspiring. The last movie where hes walking away and the music was just something I remember feeling so... depressing and inspiring at the same time. Fallout 1 feels so much more like a work of art that drew you into it's dark and mysterious world than number 2.

Fallout 2 didn't quite do that for me. I liked it a lot but as far as story telling goes it wasn't as significant. At the very onset it gave you an identity that wasn't just the SPECIAL and tag skills. You were part of a tribe and you had a predermined mission coming from a place you had visited previously in the game. The sense of urgency wasn't as alarming as Vault 13 either. It seemed the Vault 13 people were really scared of the future where as your tribe was just going through some hard times. You knew a lot about your home and other tribes had tried to integrate back into society before with some small success. You had already learned to live off the land(somewhat). In Vault 13 it was truly an anything goes when you first stepped out into the world. In the tribe you were expecting some shit but you weren't as balls to the fire scared as if you had never seen the sun in your whole life.

Fallout 1 was a confrontation four ways between the evils of the new world, good of the old world, the evils of the old world, and good of the new world. Fallout 2 was more, the confrontation of the new world versus the old world.

There was still all those elements in Fallout 2 but they were more complicated and it was very political. The emphasized roles were those of the NEW GOOD vs. the OLD BAD. It seems like those of the old world just joined with the new to help them and the NEW BAD weren't powerful enough to play a big part.

I do think politics play a strong role in a hypothetical apocalyptic world rebuilding itself but its my opinion that less structure within your interaction with people can make a story more suspenseful and thrilling. As in the case of a Post-Nuke style story.(http://www.postnukecomic.com/) Your decisions have so much more to do with you as a person instead of the law or the society around you. Your Karma actually means something to you even if other people don't know it. Can be an evil toy or a effective motivator.

Vault City is what I'm mostly thinking about here. If in Fallout 1 you wanted to murder someone I think you had a better chance of getting away with it(in any situation). In Vault City its nearly impossible until you have leveled quite a bit and got the Power Armor mach 2. Maybe the BOS is the exception but they really stood for protection and politics. They had that as a specific role. It was a huge contrast between the other places that were practically lawless.

I'm running out of time and yet I can go on for a while. Join. DIE! Join. DIE!

Fallout 2, for two reasons. While Fallout 1 did have a better storyline the limit of time to get things was quite annoying. Secondly, Push...

I vote FO1 for its coherence. The farther south you traveled in FO2, the more held together with a bubble gum it felt .

@Xamedu You could do everything except the main quest and finish game in less than 80 days, so the 150-day limit is more than enough to pass the game twice Image

I like them both, but i always played Fallout 2 more then 1. Probably because it`s bigger and you can do a lot of more things. After Arroyo(that tutorial temple is such a waste of pixels) almost everything just keeps getting better and better (New Reno, Modoc, NCR, Broken Hills, etc) untill you reach San Francisco. That place could have used a lot of more finetuning. The different areas weren`t put together very well. I usually stop playing right there. Fallout 1 is a less fun, but the atmosphere is very dark. So for me, it`s Fallout 2. The Future Was Yesterday!

Fallout 3 :P

Ehm, Fallout 2 was better. When playing, you realize that you're in a universe so big that you can just stare at it. Lots of cities, all so big. Lots of people, all using the words they would use if a nuclear war really happened.

But i like Fallout more even though i can't name one reason.

I like the freedom and the greater size of Fallout 2, but there were way too many jokes and pop culture references. A good portion of the "Fallout Bible," by Chris Avellone was simply citing which bits of goofiness didn't actually happen or were different in Fallout canon (talking plant, Skynet, etc.).

I liked Fallout 1 better because it was much easier to go through the entire game without killing a single person then 2. You could still do it in 2, but the level of difficulty skyrocketed because it was so much longer then the 1st one. Also, Fallout 1 has a much better ending then the 2nd. I felt I was left behind in Fallout 2, but in Fallout 1 I actually felt like screaming "Khan". Image

Fallout 1 definitely sealed the deal for me. Fallout 2 was good and all but there wasn't much of an upgrade between the two interfacewise. Besides the slow ass cash transactions and organizing of equipment. Fallout 2 was just more over the top and unrealistic in many ways. The NPCs were just not as heartfelt or believable as they were in Fallout 1. I also like the Fallout 1 story better and the fact that you can complete the game without killing anybody. Technically you don't HAVE to fire your gun in Fallout 2 but Frank at the end does have to be killed by people and turrets at least. I also did not like the talking Deathclaws, they sure as hell didn't talk in the first one.

But like I said, I enjoyed them both and have played each numerous times, but Fallout 1 easily surpasses Fallout 2 IMO.

I prefer replaying Fallout 2 mainly because of the larger game world. The start of Fallout 2 was quite weak, and I didn't really enjoy the early tribal camp or first village, but the middle and latter stages of the game more than made up for this.

Walking around in upgraded power armour with an avenger mini-gun was so much fun :D

For me, Fallout 1. I just loved how mature and dark its setting and story were. The game was also incredibly atmospheric, especially during the second half of the game when you begin investigating the super mutant threat.
