Not to be confused with Nationalism, national pride is nothing to be ashamed of, i take note of the severe lack of national pride and celebrations purely for the pride of a nation, hell, i went to a country concert once, that is what is missing from europe, so many american flags waiving is started spouting my anti-communist blabber, i think i got laid, hard to remember.
Now that is something I couldn't do
I love calling myself a swede, I love our history, I love when foreigners are interested in us, but I'm not much for waving flags at all and... heck, I only know the beginning of the national anthem!
Well, our national day isn't really anything to celebrate anyways, like other nations celebrating the day they freed themselves from their oppressors, but Sweden has always been the oppressor, until we lost a lot of land which is nothing to celebrate. We celebrate when King Vasa became king and got rid of catholocism, I guess that is something. Oh yeah, Sweden is like the second or third least religious country in the world
Edit: oh, and him getting us out of the Kalmar union aswell (which united sweden, norway and denmark (a good think in my opinion, I'm a scandinavist) but put these nations under a single king, a danish king, and danes and swedes have huge history together... actually, we keep the record of "most wars fought between each other in the world" Haha!)
Ya, same here, but, if I ever make it out of this rotting city alive, maybe I can go visit other countries, and cultures.Just to breath in new life into me, Emo, I know, Hell, I haven't even seen the Mayan pyramids in Chiapas,Mexico, where my mom grow up.Maybe, just visiting another state will do me some good. Get drunk in a place I have never been, sounds great :foodndrink: .
How is visiting and learning about other cultures "emo", which is a music style?
And on the topic of Midsommarafton (midsummer's eve), it is an old Norse tradition originally, but it was "christianized" in the way that they changed the reason of celebrating it to it being the birthday of John the Baptist. Then it has been mixed and mixed with a lot of other traditions and foreign influences and today it's just a reason to get drunk, eat good food and doing funny dances
But yeah, originally it was an old viking tradition, dancing around a phallos symbol of fertility and sacrifice food and all that. Same thing at Midvinterafton (midwinter's eve) or http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Midvinterblot_%28disambiguation%29 (midwinter sacrifice), where the viking celebrated the light coming back, and sacrificed a goat (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yule_goat
) or a boar (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Christmas_ham
), and it was "christianized" aswell, merging it with christmas. A swedish christmas (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yule) today has loads of "heathen" things in it, which I find funny
There, now you learnt something about Sweden. Don't thank me, it was my pleasure
Edit: damn, alot of smileys!
