Fallout 4 feels immature

Post » Mon Jan 18, 2016 2:21 pm

I can carve up dead people with a chainsaw.

I stabbed a guy so hard his head exploded.

I punched a guy so hard his entire body exploded.

I didn't realize that this level of maturity was supposed to exist in the writing too... but all jokes aside, the OP makes a solid point that the game's writing is weak. I don't care about this guy's kid or his wife, and Codsworth creeps me out. My 6-year-old nephew was telling me about sand sharks (not the real thing but like a shark that swims in the desert) and I suddenly realized that he could have written a more compelling story than anyone who worked on this game.

The Story is ok for me, my Problem is you get to many Times forced in some Options i never would do or they are just unlogic. I dont know if i can use the word immature for this. But to split up the Main Story on 4 half baked Main Factions maybe it is immature for me.

Story seems fine to me. It's not the best, but it's not terrible. If you want a game like Witcher, go play Witcher. Not every game is going to be a hit to every player.

How many hours have you played this game you paid 60 bucks for? Pretty sure almost everyone who is complaining has gotten their money's worth out of it. Unless they put it down after the first couple hours.

Dialogue wheel does need to be redone though....

I feel your pain, but you won′t be understood here. Fallout got bought by Bethesda and sacrificed on the altar of their elder scrolls fans so they can now sell the same engine + mechanics twice as a simple total conversion.

The Bethesda fans that are mainly here know their elder scrolls franchise with all it′s changes and for them it′s totally logical why Bethesda did to Fallout what they have done

No, no, no. Stop. He's 18. Don't tell him he's just misunderstood, he already knows that.

We all get it. Nobody here is claiming the writing is top-notch. We're just saying: it's not tooth-gnashing kind of stuff. Relax. Some people have real problems.

Fallout 4 has 43.

I'm an Elder Scrolls fan, and while I just defended Bethesda. I do not understand anything they have done. Yes, i love Fallout 4, but I was expecting more RP, mature content, etc...more factions. I'm sorry, but the game is supposed to be bigger than Skyrim, but manages to feel immensely smaller. It feels like the complete opposite of Elder Scrolls. Lack of large independent factions that have nothing to do with the main quest line. Use for pickpocketing and other mechanics. I know I just defended them because I hate rants, but if you want an accurate description it's FPS, pause ghetto minecraft, and watered down RP. NOT Elder Scrolls reimagined. Hell, even elder scrolls isn't elder scrolls anymore, but still doesn't sit with fallout imho

Sorry, I was amusing myself. Yeah, the games are different.

As much as I LOVED Witcher 3, I enjoyed the atmosphere of Fallout 4 a lot more, so I enjoyed it more despite the lack of heartfelt or even intelligible dialogue. Well I guess there was a little...it just wasn't very deep. We all know this is a weak area for Beth. They can design an amazing, interactive world, but they can't seem to recreate a simple conversation between two humans.

Whenever I read these ranty posts about how "bad" the Bethesda writing is, I am always reminded that most of you do not write for video games or movies. fan fic is all well and good, but I bet none of you have a good idea what is required to get a game the size and scope of Fallout or Witcher, or Dragon Age, in this day and age. You know what, there was some good writing in this game... they have steadily improved since Oblivion. I am not including text based games, that is different criteria. If you personally don't like Bethesda games, stop buying them. Stop pretending you are "testing" them by buying a game and then snottily declaring that once again it didn't live up to your expectations

You can swoon about FONV... it was a fine enough game, not great/  That, is my personal opinion - it was not awesomely written either. Again, my opinion, much like your opinion is aired in the opening post.

People posting rude personal remarks about how [censored] the writers are and whatnot have no manners. You can talk about how this story or that element didn't work, but you don't. You slag real people, calling them lazy, immature, unable to write. They can write - and they make a living off it. I bet those of you snotting all over the writing don't make a living at writing.

Whew, I have wanted to get that off my chest for a bit. Fallout 4 is, In my personal opinion, a LOT of fun. Both stories, exploring and roleplaying. Bethesda makes these sorts of games and I am extremely glad they do. I am also extremely glad the early fallouts were made... because those were great games back in 1998 and 1999. I am also happy CFProject Red and Bioware make games I like too. Are any of these games perfect? No... but they scratch an itch for me at different times. As do other fun games.

Games are fun... or am I not getting that anymore? Maybe I am old-fashioned.

Just finished FO4? Try going straight back into New Vegas. The first thing that strikes you is how FO4 looks soooo much nicer...

The second thing that strikes you is how FO4 is so much worse as a game.

Sorry but NV is simply a better game. It's grim. It's tough. It can be really funny. The companions actually have personalities and great story lines, and best of all you fear the enemies. You bump into a Death claw in Vegas, you [censored] your pants and die. By level 15 in FO4 there was no more fear. Just exploring, and exploring can be pretty dull without fear.

New Vegas for me. Still the best interpretation of the FO universe so far.

I also forgive Bethesda because their games have built in molding capabilities and they release tools to help mod them.

Do NOT count me as one of the happy ones. I hate the direction FO 4 has gone, story, RPG and game play. It is a glorified open world shooter and there are a lot better open world shooters then FO 4. I sure hope they understand their mistakes. I will tell you this FO 5 will NOT be a day one buy for me, if the key things that make a FO unique do not get better this will be my last one.

I am sorry, this is probably rude, but Boo-fricketly-hoo.

Things change dude, I get the Fallout love, I played them when they were released, replayed them even. But that was near 20 years ago now. The gaming landscape has changed. So have I, so has everyone. Stop feeling sorry for yourself and find other developers you can dig and enjoy.

PS: Bet that Bethesda won't release another FO game for quite a few years. That is how they roll, based on their release timings since Morrowind.

Did that 10 days ago. Saw the graphics, downloaded some sweetfx and.... played since then.

The realtime gunplay is a lot worse, the world from a graphics/details point of view is a bit boring, that′s true. But all this connectivity in the writing of the quests and storys all over the place is just....wonderful.

True. All true. But still, it lacks heart, soul and motivation for me. I do love all the action though. I just wish they'd all just shut up. I DON'T CARE BOZO'S!

FNV is a true RPG for me. I don't even play the game. I just wander around and kill things and make money. No quests for me.

Sure hope they don't make Fallout 5 soon. They need to make the next ES game first. For those of us who don't like post apocalyptic "no one has cleaned up the mess in the last 200+ years" depressing no hope for the future everyone out for themselves set the world on fire and let it die games. I've played the first Fallout games. I didn't see the same things you keep saying are there. The choices weren't that hard for me to make. Guess that means I didn't really care about the characters. Or something. Kicking a kid out into the wasteland who has never been out of the vault to go find a water chip...Gee. That should turn out swell. Nothing out there can kill them or anything. Right?

If you handed the first two FO games to writers and film directors they'd probably laugh. Video games might be art; film worthy, not so much. You might want to start looking at the indie games. The major game studios aren't going to do a limited niche type game. The only one I can think of is Pillars of Eternity; you might consider that one made to order, so to speak. It wouldn't have happened unless people forked over the cash to get the devs to make it. [Yes, I own it; I thought enough of it to be one of the backers.] Did you consider the sequel to Wasteland that was the original inspiration for the first Fallout? Wasteland 2 might be more what you're looking for. Supposedly there are choices and stuff, at least according to reviews/sites. http://guides.gamepressure.com/wasteland2/

You got paid for that? Damn, I'm in the wrong business.

I've been paid for journalism and for playwriting (like: theater, not like: cinema). They were small gigs, but most writers - even writers for games - don't get by just on this one job alone.

Sorry, I really don't see anything "mature" about stuff like supermutant DJs with multiple personality disorders mature. Or some weird screaming lottery winner funny. In fact I found a lot of their writing cringey like teenagers trying to write mature content. I even though there were quite a few things in the originals that were a bit over the top and just written in for an attempt at shock value. I really prefer Bethesda's more down to earth writing style. Obviously you will disagree, but there's my 2 cents.

All this talk about what's good writing got me thinking of one of my favorite quotes.

“Fools have a habit of believing that everything written by a famous author is admirable. For my part I read only to please myself and like only what suits my taste.” - Voltaire

Please note I'm not calling anyone a fool and yes I realize the irony of using a famous author to make my point.

Real talk: you don't get a job in the industry by trashing other people's work. You do it by making friends in the industry and then showing those friends the work you've done. Start writing your own quests. Get the dialogue trees and quest states down on paper now so that you're ready to jump when the CK hits. Then practice saying stuff like, "I don't know who this Darth Victor Cerys fella is, but hey, he doesn't know how hard it is writing quests, I've done it, it's not easy, have you seen my work?"

Finished Wasteland 2 already. Nothing special either but at least writing was great. Pillars of Eternity? In my top 3 of the year 2015 just behind Witcher 3 and Bloodborne. This year was good in general, too bad Fallout 4 turned out to be the biggest dissapointed. Too bad because its still my favourite franchise.

Witcher 3, Bloodborne and Pillars of Eternity are the highest level of art - the interactive one. I wouldnt hesitate to show em up to creators from another mediums and call them as Art. But... But still not my Fallout.

Maybe I am just a decadent.
