Hey Gizmo, how do you talk to tke muties in the army base? I always just get shot before getting close if i try to(nust times i just shot em from the distance)

And did charisma matter in fallout btw i know that in 2 it would matter to become a pormstar and on how much companions you could have but never understood what it did in the original fallouut.
Start a new game as a test; take Albert. Go straight to the MB, put away your weapon and talk to the gate guard. You should save a few times on the way and once there.

Charisma in FO1 I think just affects barter, speech and reaction.

Fallout 2 isn't free, no promotion. Buy it, you'd be doing yourself a favor most likely. Also I assume you got in this little promo. Don't tell me your done with FO1 already. I've owned it since tail-end 97' and still have yet to see/do every tiny thing there is. Though it's not impossible

I hear people saying how big fallout 1 is, and how hard it is to complete EVERYTHING (like in every other fallout game) but from looking at the map it doesnt look that way. Are not all locations on the map?

You don't see them in the map before you discover them, then they are added to the right side list of locations.

Big as in "it covers half the state of California" maybe? Instead of just a downsized city and its immediate surroundings like F3 and FNV?

Fallout has 12 major (multi-level) locations on the map; but encounters can happen anywhere on the map. The land was left desolate and barren after the war; you can walk for days, or weeks and see nothing but wasted land ~because that's what's there. The game depicts this via abstraction rather than a detailed 1:1 scale explorable map with nothing of interest for miles and miles in every direction. Time passes in hours/days/weeks as you cross the overland map; the terrain you cross aids or hinders your progress; (slow over the mountains, fast over the salt flats). The game is conceptually huge while elegantly fitting on one CD.

since its free i decided "what a hell why not". i am a big fan of fallout series such as f3 and new vegas, however, i was skeptical about getting original classics. Long time ago gamestap had fallout 1 for free to play for non-paying users, im not sure if its still is, anyway, i tried it and quit after exiting vault 13 cave, do to not being a fan of such series, until recently. Last year i had been introduced to fallout new Vegas and my god i could not stop playing it, so after, well i do not know... billions of hours playing NV i had to get f3, and i was impressed (except operation anchorage, what were they thinking) .

First time trying this game i was frustrated. Combat tactical turn base, constantly dying, not knowing where to go, annoying controls to get use to (right click back and forward switching to move or interact). I did not give up, i pass the point of frustration and it turn out to be hell of a fun game. The only thing i regret is playing series backwards, from latest game to oldest. To those who love fallout need to try classics, it is interesting to see how series evolved and its origins. I had been playing this thing for past 3 days, just have to get use to different game style.

Wouldn't work on my old laptop, works on my new one, albeit with issues, have it through steam. Has funny colours, and occasionally the screen does a thing where it blacks out pixels until I move the cursor over them, or until I change screen(like opening the pip boy). Because of that I don't see myself playing more than 20-30 mins a go, also as I find the old school format of the game difficult to get used too after being spoiled by new games, but I still intend to play it.

Anyway, was wondering if there were any tips from players here about how to play the game, mods, patches, for a first time Fallout 1 player. (Have played 3 and NV extensively)

The Blackout bug is a problem on recent hardware&OS; the easy workaround for this is to press the 'F1' key twice (quickly). This displays the in-game hotkey help; but as a side effect it refreshes the entire screen. (Accessing any full screen menu would also work.)

You have two choices to get rid of the funny colors.

1. install http://www.gog.com/en/forum/fallout_series/fallout_mods/page1

or

2. install http://www.nma-fallout.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=57362

I was able to get both options working with my Steam install, but it's a little tricky. If you do Fallout FIXT, after you install it it creates a new directory C:/Games/Fallout FIXT/ and you have to copy CRITTER.DAT and MASTER.DAT from your steam directory to the Fallout FIXT directory. If you don't copy those two files, the 64-bit-OS.bat doesn't work and you can't run the game.

If you decide to do the respatcher separately, it doesn't accept your falloutw.exe file until it you have it patched first with 1.2x and 1.3. patches, and there are several other community patches and mods rolled up into Fallout FIXT so that you might prefer to do them all at once by going the other route.

Once this is all finished, you can go in-game and select 32-bit colors in the options menu, and whatever screen resolution you prefer.

NOTE: no matter which option you choose, the Steam overlay is not going to work with Fallout 1.

 How can there be a 340 megabyte patch for a 480 megabyte game!?

Impressive patch though.

Atta boy. This is pretty much similar to reactions from friends who'd never played the first as well. After a little frustration or just "getting it" they eased in quickly. They repeated how the aesthetics were so similar to 3, meaning BGS at least captured that much with it.

So yeah, pleasantly surprised by the new FO 1 players/fans.

1-) Run the game. Then Alt+Tab,
2-) CTRL+ALT+DELETE to launch Task Manager -> Terminate "explorer.exe" and return to game.
3-) When you are done playing, click "new task" in Task Manager and write "explorer.exe" and? press enter.

This did it for me, if anybody is having problems running it.

taskkill /F /IM Explorer.exe
falloutw.exe
Start explorer.exe

Make a command serie like that in your FO1 folder and use it to run the game.
