I forgot about that thread. Although something like this (a free game!) is kinda big news. :P

Fallout1 downloaded. Whether I'll play it or not, I'm not sure. :D
But I love GoG. I toss money their way every year and constantly pray for their continued success.

The GoG version has no DRM, meaning it's actually yours.

Did you figure out a way to make your Steam overlay work with FO1?

Steam overlay wont work with Fallout 1, but if you download the high res patch and engine tweaks, then the overlay will work for Fallout 2.

Incidentally, for anyone who is just getting the game, you need a couple patches to fix the colors and the aspect ratio for modern monitors:

Just played a bit - this is a really hard game! I died about 15 times, even with the combat setting on "wimp."

I made a character with high intelligence, perception, charisma, thinking there would be a lot of interesting dialogue, but so far it's only cave rats and scorpions, and they kill me every time. Reached Vault 15 but never found any NPCs that you can interact with other than one random vendor in the desert who didn't have much dialogue (although I did find a random encounter wrecked UFO with a plasma pistol).

Did you stop by Shady Sands before you went to Vault 15? That place has a few characters to speak to, like the head of guards (who you can buy a rope from, handy when you go to Vault 15), Ian (a possible companion), Aradesh, Tandi and Raslo. Keep in mind you're just in the very very beginning still, things get more interesting when you get down to Junktown and the Hub... and old-school RPG's just love to pit you against rats as a tutorial ;)

So far I haven't found Shady Sands.

Just encountered one random merchant on my way to Vault 15. I suppose I need to wander the desert a bit and look for some kind of town.

:/

Shady Sands is on the way to Vault 15, like two squares away from Vault 13 where you start out.

You get the Alien Blaster from that. Soon as you find a good supply of SEC's your set, if you want to use energy weapons that is.

It should be in-between vault 13 and vault 15. If you go in a straight line between the vaults you can't miss it.

Awesome. Free always gets people playing. As of now I'd say about a thousand or more people who've never seen or played FO 1 is playing it right now.

As my favorite RPG of all time it's great to see people appreciate it.

The land is desolate, save for a few settlements. It's also the case that you likely walked through Shady Sands on the way to Vault 15; and it's certainly the case that if you missed SS, you'll need to return before you delve deeper into Vault 15.

The combat is tough, but it's fair ~and they can run out of ammo too.

* There are enemies that can wipe you out though... so while you can walk anywhere, you probably shouldn't just yet. I'd say stick to the places you hear mentioned in the game when you talk to NPC's.

** There is also a "Tell me about" button in dialog; on principle NPCs they usually have additional comments that you'll never hear unless you ask. Ask by using names they've mentioned, or names that seem likely for them to know. For instance... If they mention a town by name, you could ask them about it in the "Tell Me About" dialog box, and they might tell you a bit more about it.

And guess what!! I LOVE IT. Seriously, if it was in 3D like Vegas and fallout 3 then it would clearly be the best (beside fallout 2 and tactics havent tried them out yet, as i just started playing the older versions).
Come to wonder, its kinda hard to make money if ya ask me, never find any loot, and i think its very complicated. Anyone have any hints or anything about the ways of money making or something? trying desperatly to pay the water merchants to get more days to find that water chip thingy.

And if i pay them once, can i keep paying them to supply the vault so i can have a little more time finding the chip?
