Fallout 4 focusing too much on FPS?

Post » Tue Dec 01, 2015 8:23 pm

So from everything I have seen so far it looks like the shooting mechanics have been overhauled by a ton. Im not saying thats a bad thing at all, but when I see clips of the gameplay it seems like all I see is nothing but shoot em' up gameplay. I also keep hearing about how crafting and modding have been improved upon... also good things IMO. I just still have yet to see any news about things like the speech skill. The only thing I have heard in this area was that if the player wishes you will be able to complete the game without killing a single person... that made me breathe a little easier. Not saying I want a pacifist playthrough but I simply hate when im forced to kill in every situation to resolve a conflict.

I just really hope they put as much time into other aspects of Fallout as it seems they did with the action parts of the game. And honestly, seeing the few clips where the player has dialoge but only has four options to pick from makes me weary.

The combat and shooting mechanics have been overhauled a ton in Fallout 4, because Bethesda Game Studios hired a employee from Bungie to give them very good shooting mechanics for First Person (FPS) in Fallout 4.

There is like 70+ articles talking about Fallout 4 and one of those articles explains where Bethesda Game Studios says they hired a employee from Bungie.

Todd Howard himself even said he wanted the combat in Fallout 4 to feel like modern First Person Shooter (FPS) video games.

Well since they wanna be as tight lipped about story as they can, they can't really show off dialogue, plus dialogues are all nice and interesting as part of the game, but they don't really make good YouTube material.

Plus its not all action, we got a insight into the character system not long ago and some interesting behind the scenes stuff.

One thing, you will not be able to go through the entire game without killing a single enemy. Todd Howard said during I think it was the E3 demo that you could bypass a lot of combat situations with the speech skills, but an entirely pacifistic playthrough wasn't a goal of Bethesda for Fallout 4. So, get your trigger finger ready, there will be blood.

Crafting and customizing weapons lends itself to the FPS genre to be honest. When I think of adding scopes, surpressers, bigger magazine sizes etc I think of the most recent instalments of the Call of Duty franchise's multiplayer mechanics.

I think the "action" is that one hook that will draw every kind of audience, so Bethesda is primarily showing that off. I imagine there will be more to Fallout 4 than just action.

I'm glad to hear that you can get through the game using passive means though. I think Fallout New Vegas boased this ability, but I never tried it myself.

My main point was simply that I hope they didnt just overhaul all the "action" mechanics of the game and forget about a lot of the things that made me a fan of the series in the first place. I always create characters that focus more on science, speech, charisma etc. rather than guns and combat skills. Im one of those weird people that actually reads/ listens to the dialoge of the game rather than rapidly skip through it to get to more action. I just really hope they created a game that is equally good for action as it is in other aspects

You sort of have it wrong.

Call of Duty and Call of Duty 2 never had weapons crafting and weapons customizations. You are not able to put scopes on a Kar 98K, Springfield rifle or Moisin Nagant you can choose scoped ones, but that's about it.

E3 presentation was a "Wow look at that" kind of thing. They wanted to grab the attention of people that don't know about Fallout, because let's face it, they know the majority of their fans are going to buy it anyway. I mean look at most of us. We've seen very little of the actual game and we're fiending like meth heads lol The've overhauled a lot of different aspects of the game but I don't think improved shooting mechanics means it'll feel more like a FPS. I think it will feel exactly as it is, like Fallout.

honestly... I hope it does feel more like an FPS. BUT only when it should (meaning not all the time). One thing that has plagued my experience of F3 and NV were their horrible shooting mechanics. It was hard enough to play in 1st person and pretty damn near impossible in 3rd. I heard they made it so its now possible to play in both, which is delighted news for myself as I usually prefeer to play in 3rd when roaming the wastes and usually switch into 1st when entering places like buildings and vaults.

IMO theres nothing wrong about having solid shooting mechanics in Fallout, my point was I dont want that to be where all their attention went.

110% agree. I hope, when I need it, it will feel like a good shooter. I don't understand why people think that's a bad thing. Not like we're gonna be put on rails and it'll be super linear and boring lol that won't happen. We've seen and they've said it won't happen.

They are marketing the game to "gain" FPS audience (or convince those that complained FO3s FPS aspects were poor...which they mostly were). Why would they spend money to Market the game to RPG fans of FO3? They pretty much know they have that audience's price of admission with just the Fallout name (not saying that's a given or a good thing).

Well to be honest FO3 was wonderful, other than the real time combat aspect.

Obviously they will focus on the weakest part of the game v

Any fears I had that the world was smaller or had less depth were assuaged by looking at the shots of various locales during the E3 presentation. A town, a factory of some sort, Diamond City, a flooded area full of Super Mutants, the irradiated area . . . .

We've been assured that the world is about as big as Skyrim, which is plenty big. Given that we've seen a solid foundation for the game's story - though not much of the story itself - I'm fairly convinced there'll be compelling elements to it. So while they have vastly improved the combat mechanics of the game, there's still plenty of evidence that they've put just as much effort into making the whole game as good or better than any past Fallout experience.

I dunno man, those Charisma perks look pretty OP.

I think it was just marketing, those CoD kids eat that shooting stuff up. Smart move by Bethesda tbh.

Yeah, im sure a lot of CoD type players saw that presentation and thought it looked like their type of game because of the non stop action and seemingly endless customization of weapons.... oh and jetpacks lol. Honestly still dont know how I really feel about that one yet. It did seem like it was only used more as like a short burst type of accesory rather than a jetpack designed for duration. still though....

I often see people trash-talk Bethesda's writing. Maybe Bethesda has become aware of that?

Maybe they know that most people like to play their games for the gameplay, not the story, so they're marketing the gameplay more then the story?

Except they specifically said they just don't want to reveal much of the story... and I'd hope, like the shooting mechanics, they saw a weakness and improved upon it instead of pushing it to the side altogether

Well that's the beauty of options, ya don't like the jetpack, just don't put that mod on your PA.

As do I. I don't hate Bethesda's writing, but it always felt like it wasn't very important to them. Like the world and exploration were their number one priorities. That's why I'm so excited the main character is voiced. Giving the main character a voice makes them more a of character in and of themselves, which can lead to far more interesting and fluent interactions with NPCs. It can make the story far better if they do it right.

Like others, I think that they're just focusing on that one because the action lends itself to exciting trailers and doesn't spoil much. I'm glad they're improving the mechanics and I'm not worried that it will overshadow the exploration and world-building.

I agree, but wrong topic :P Here ya go: http://www.gamesas.com/topic/1538536-will-fallout-4-be-smaller-than-we-think/

I plan on using VATS only for combat to keep it based more on character skill.

I too hope FPS mechanics are better, but don't want the game to feel like a shooter designed for twitch reflex gamers. To me that would be a big disappointment. Hoping the story is better than 3's, which didn't bother me too much, but it was cheesy at times. Even Skyrim's was a little cheesy, but I don't play these games for some epic tale, thats what I create in my own head by my own in game actions. As long as the game still allows that, I'm good.

Fallout 3 and even NV strongly lacked in the gun combat genre.

This is a welcome change.
