Fallout 2 for a dummie.

Post » Sat May 28, 2011 7:46 am

Just started fallout 2.. Got through a bit of it, realized that since I have little to no knowledge of how I should follow the storyline I am bound to have done something stupid as [censored]. So, I am started a new character. I want him to be like a medium weapon using soldier, probably would use a pipe rifle early on or something like. I want to steer away from pistols, even though I am sure it would be convenient. Probably hunting rifle, I don't want to be a sniper though..
So with that all in mind fallout gods. Can you build a character for a noobie?

Just follow the towns in the order you get them and all should be ok. Arroyo -> Klamath-> Den -> Vault City/ stop at Modoc on the way. The 10mm Pistol is much better then the pipe rifle so you'll be stuck using it unless you want to reload after everyshot and have a generally inferior weapon. You'll pick up a 10mm SMG fairly early from random encounters or merchants fairly soon. If you stop at Modoc and do all the quests there you can get some goodies that will help you out in your "soldier" build.

This is my idea of a "Perfect" character. 5 points for strength because you'll get the maximum of 10 this way without wasting points. 7 for perception so you can get 8 with surgery and get Sniper. 2 for endurance because it's not too important. 8 for Charisma so you get the maximum amount of party members with Sunglasses(put them in your active item slot, like where guns go) and the charisma surgery. 8 for int so you get a lot of skillpoints per level and can get 9 eventually. 10 for agility because you can't increase it more and it's the most important combat stat. 8 for luck so you can get a maximum of 10(you have to save and reload constantly when you're taking the Huboligists test in NCR, wait until you get 10). This is extremely important, you want 10 luck so you can get a 100% critical hit chance with the "Sniper" perk. Take Note that critical hits in Fallout 1 and 2 are a LOT better than in 3 and NV. This kind of character will be very weak in the start, but once you get Sulik you'll begin to start rolling over people. This also makes sense if you want a soldier character because soldiers work in squads.

ALTERNATIVELY:Swap Endurance for Charisma and be a solo character and get rid of small frame. Small Frame isn't that great for solo plays, so get another trait
PS: http://user.tninet.se/~jyg699a/fallout2.html Since you've played it in a few times I think it's good for you to read this. It's the "Nearly Ultimate Fallout 2 Guide" it has every single crazy occurrence and every single quest and action in it.

Hope this helped

Generally the stories of Fallout 1 and 2 follow a play-by-ear style. I'll start you off. You go to Klamath to find Vic and you hear that he went to the Den. Go to the Den and find Vic.

Oh and for a build I recommend something like

ST: 5
PE: 7
EN: 3
CH: 6
IN: 6
AG: 10
LU: 7

Traits: Small Frame, Gifted

Tags: Small Guns, Lockpick, Speech

When you get to the NCR get the Zeta-Scan from the Hubologist, which will raise you by 2 luck. If you want at some point you want to get Gain Luck for that last point, go ahead.

That's pretty much what Olafmikli just said :P Seems to be a good, well-tried and recommended setup

Save before the Zeta scan - the +2 luck increase is random, you could also decrease your luck.

Meh, I wouldn't recommend taking any of the "gain"(think intense training) perks, but either way you'll want 10 luck by the end with a shooting character(melee doesn't need luck because slayer doesn't require luck and gives you a 100% critical hit chance while sniper requires luck

Shdwhunt, is your build missing char points?

Perks to Aim for

Quick Pockets
Sniper/slayer
Awareness
Melee:Bonus Moves
Living Anatomy
Burst Weapons:Bonus Ranged Damage(it adds 2 damage to EVERY shot. Only viable for burst weapons though.
Bonus Rate of Fire/Bonus Hand to Hand attacks
Better Criticals(but not MORE criticals)

You can also use drugs before level ups to exploit perk requirements, and if you go for a melee character you can take advantage of all the +unarmed bonuses from quests and 10% free from sierra army depot(punch the boxing things) so I would say start with skilling up melee and skill up unarmed later.

I could be missing points, but then again I really wasn't adding.

So you don't use Action Boy/ Girl? Personally I love a Vindicator Minigun with 12 AP, Fast Shot, BRoF, and Sniper. Very fun.

Oh right, Action Boy! That would be higher priority than Quick Pockets.

I went to NCR, and on the way I got some items. I sold them and got that badass BB gun with 25-25 Damage and 100 clip.
Is that good? I think it really fits my class... To Navarro!

If you intend on fighting your way through the facility I'd suggest ditching the BB

There's a lady you can talk to on the west side of town she has a few relatively easy jobs for you which can get you about $1000 iirc

No I just knew where it was from a lets play and I travelled there, on the way some hubologists and a gang did a battle, I grabbed the very valuable remains, sold it to the guys at the NCR, then went back to the den with my brand new BB gun.

The LE BB gun is pretty badass, eventually you'l replace it with a gauss gun though.

You don't really need money ~things that cost money, are usually optional ~like gambling, and buying booze.
As was said, pick up anything that looks valuable and trade for it. Use the bottlecaps to even out your trades if you have them (or want them). :goodjob:

The Hub or the Brotherhood, but not the BOS if you need it immediately.
