Fallout 4 for PlayStation 4

Post » Tue Dec 01, 2015 11:22 am

So as i like to get all Bethesda games on all platforms, i was wondering. What about the PlayStation 4 version. We all know how Fallout 3 and New Vegas played on the PlayStation 3.

I know that the PlayStation 4 uses different hardware, so i have hopes that Fallout 4 on the PS4 will really really do well this time.

What do you think?

I hope so considering I will be playing it on PS4 this time. At least until I get my PC built .

Beth pretty much indirectly confirmed that the issues that plauged the PS3 version of Fallout 3 can't and won't happen with the PS4 version of 4, due to the structure of both current gen consoles.

From what I hear from people who know this stuff way better then I do(because I know nothing about it) the PS4 is pretty much a XB1 it's has a little bit more power.

I'm sure that the game will be fine on Playstation 4, at least after a patch or 2. From what I hear, Skyrim was painfully buggy on PS4 at launch, but after a while was just fine.

With that said, Bethesda has a long history with Xbox. They made their console debut with Morrowind on Xbox, which never came to Playstation. Oblivion came to Xbox 360 a long time before it came to PS3 (don't quote me, but it may have even been a year). Fallout 3 had timed DLC exclusivity on 360, and Skyrim's DLC took insanely long to make it onto PS3, to the extent that fans were very angry. Now, mods are coming to Xbox One before they "hope" to get them on Playstation. Furthermore, without outwardly stating it, many of the devs such as Pete Hines and Todd Howard seem to play on Xbox by default. You'll notice that the E3 presentation was played on what appeared to be an Xbox One, or at least with an Xbox One controller (hence the control scheme icons).

The point I'm trying to make is it seems that Bethesda Game Studios' games are generally optimized for Xbox. If you ask me, the Xbox version is the paramount of their development, but that's just how it seems to me. Nothing against Playstation; seems like they're getting the best version of Metal Gear Solid V, so it's even :)

Rule of thumb: if you happen to have both consoles, I definitely advise that you go with the Xbox version. But I doubt the PS4 version will be that much different.

Yup.
OP is asking if consoles an entire decade apart are anywhere near similar and the answer is 'no'. Not even close.
However, you can always count on EA releasing crappy games mixed in with the good ones, just to "keep fans on their toes".

I will never buy a Beth game for any iteration of the PS until they have proven comprehensively they haven't made the same mistakes. It was an absolute farce, and Beth should be ashamed of themselves. Totally unacceptable for a AAA developer.

Fingers crossed though, for everyone with a PS4 it's different this time around.

I doubt there will be serious issues this time. PS4 uses very similar hardware as X1 and both consoles use slightly modified X86-hardware (that's PC hardware).

The issue with PS3 was that it was a pain to program anything for it. It was way too specialized hardware with it's own tricks. Add on top of it a very limited memory and you'll have a mountain of headaches.

I got a good laugh out of that. Thanks.

Edit: Just realised that may come across as a bit jerky. I just got a chuckle because my first PC was a 286 (yes really I am that old), so it gave me a bit of a giggle at someone explaining x86 was PC hardware.

No offense meant.

Same here, although I doubt I'll bother building it. I imagine it will be fine for PS4, it will likely be slightly optimized for Xbox One/PC (considering Bethesda seem to have a pretty longstanding relationship with MS), but the events of last generation are almost an impossibility, I imagine (and hope!).

Well to be fair, I'm not building a PC just for Fallout 4. I'm anxious to see if Sony is going to jump on board the console mod boat.

I'm planning on upgrading to a PS4 when or just after FO4 comes out, I think I'll hang on a few weeks though just to be sure because the way 3 and NV played on the PS3 were god awful and totally unacceptable, So I guess I'll wait and see, I mean they do have to optimise games to run on the weaker systems afterall (Hi Microsoft)

I just got one a few days ago, yet to use it yet though (waiting on a TV bench). I'm also holding off, partially for technical fears but mainly because I'm still so hesitant about the new dialog system. Gonna wait to see it in far more detail and decided whether or not I can handle it, if not I'll wait and pray for a patch or mods if they ever make it to PS4.

The problem with Bethesda games on the PS3 was how the console handled RAM. IIRC it had two separate banks of 256MB RAM, instead of one consolidated 512MB RAM bank like the 360. And so Bethesda had a lot of trouble getting their games to work right distributing data between the two separate banks of RAM compared to just having one big pool of RAM to draw from like with PC and 360.

Whereas the PS4 and XB1 both have at least ~5GB of consolidated RAM dedicated solely to running the game.

(this probably isn't a completely accurate explanation, make of it what you will)

i wait and see.. I won't break my new ps4 to play this game..

My PC either for that matter.. I wait..

edit

One dear to me says he hears FO:4 is going to run at 30 fps on the PS4

Everything else runs at 60 fps..

One more reason for me to wait.

It was confirmed on the Fallout facebook page that Fallout 4 will run at 1080p/30fps on PS4 and XB1. There aren't any restrictions on PC, naturally.

Thank you for the quote..

Is this a restriction or a game limitation I am wondering? (Running slow because too much stuff is crammed in, or running slow because they set it that 30 is the cap for fps?)

They probably optimized the game to run at a stable 30fps, rather than a wonky 15-40fps. It's definitely a performance limitation, the game can't reliably run faster on the console hardware unless they started trimming down what's actually happening in the game.

I was under the impression it was largely due to the cell architecture, which was the CPU I think (and effectively meant it was divided into numerous parts, which gave it a considerable boost in power when used correctly but wasn't so simple to do so with). Although that may have been RAM, or both, I don't know or care all that much, so don't take my word for it here at all.

Not an issue, I'd actually be more concerned about Xbox One due to DDR3 vs PS4's DDR5. Being exclusive to current gen is also going to be a huge benefit.

It'll be fine......i hope. The Ps4 & Xbox one are built the same way so if the xbox can handle it the Ps4 can too. I hope they re-release Fallout New vegas on ps4 so i can play it through to the end without lag worse then Skyrim because i actually loved New Vegas better then 3...but off topic, The Ps4 has more power then the Xbox one & small color differences but there the same as i...& i see above others have said. So there'll not be a issue this time around.

I bought a sshd for my ps4 when fallout 4 was announced, it made witcher 3 a smoother game to play and the load times are so much better.

I think the PS4 version will be fine. But for those with a choice, XB1 is the clear winner since it will get console mods first.
