Fallout 2 glitchy and discolored.

Set paths in fallout2.cfg file to:

If FO2 is installed in Programs Files it has to look something like this:

If you installed fallout in Program Files using windows7 or Vista you're in for a puzzle. lol

My advice is: do NOT install it in that directory when you use either one of these operating systems because...

the Fallout system files will be split up here:

C:\Program Files\Black Isle\fallout2

and there:

C:\Users\"yourusername"\AppData\Local\VirtualStore\Program Files\BlackIsle\Fallout2

Easiest way to fix it without cracking your head to much is to reinstall the game somewhere else on your HDD (http://www.nma-fallout.com/article.php?id=1593).

I don't know anything about steam btw cos I don't use it.

Anyway, hope it helps.

Cheers! :foodndrink:

Steam stores the games you get from it in subfolders within its install directory.

For Fallout 2, it'll be something like Steam\steamapps\common\fallout 2.

As long as you install Steam outside of the UAC folders (and you can, and I did), you should be okay.

I uninstalled it an reinstalled just to make sure I downloaded using the Humongous option and to change the installation place from Program Files but now when I try to launch the game it can't find the text/fonts...

It can't find MASTER.DAT. You need to change Fallout 2's .CFG in notepad and direct it to MASTER.DAT, wherever it is. MASTER.DAT has all the texts/fonts, scripts, and maps for the game.

This is exactly why I don't use steam, I hate it when I'm forced to do so. Well, I'm not forced really because I disabled steam in the games that rely on this feature so I'm left with the raw game data and not some stupid attachment telling me what I can and cannot do, it's just a nuisance like a fly in my icy coke on a summers day. But anyway, I found a topic on NMA about fixing wonky colours for the STEAM Version.

See link: http://www.nma-fallout.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=54747&highlight=steam

Dunno if it helps - I didn't read it!

However I suspect this is the main problem, what shdowhuntt60 said

These are the only files you'll need for Fallout2: master.dat (318MB), critter.dat (150MB) and the entire data folder.

Put them into a folder from wherever the hell steam stored the downloaded content, in for example: c:\games\fallout2

Side note: (if what you downloaded from steam is a disk image use PowerISO, Daemon Tools or whatever to extract FO2's core files)

Open notepad, create a text file: fallout2 with a .cfg extension and redirect the paths in the cfg file accordingly to match the system files in created folder: c:\games\fallout2

Like this:

[sound]
music_path1=c:\games\fallout2\data\sound\music\
music_path2=c:\games\fallout2\data\sound\music\

[system]
critter_dat=c:\games\fallout2\critter.dat
critter_patches=c:\games\fallout2\data
master_dat=c:\games\fallout2\master.dat
master_patches=c:\games\fallout2\data

Or just copy/paste this quote into an empty text file if you're using exactly the same directory and save it as:"fallout2.cfg" (don't forget the extention:".cfg"!!!) in game folder: c:\games\fallout2

It's just an example btw you can choose any directory you want as long as you match up these files & folders. I think this method even works in the Program Files folder for Vista/Win7, although I never tested it. Whatever.. after all this crap download Killap's patch or the FO2 Restoration Project (Windows installer recommended) place it in your game folder, install, start game, go to options: scrn, set to 16bit colors, restart et voilà c'est tout. Maybe it seems a bit puzzling at first but it's not rocket science either.

Good luck! ;)

*Edit* (I forgot) Also copy fallout2.___ to c:\games\fallout2 and change extention to .exe

Here is a screenshot how the core game folder before playing/patching/modding has to be:

I used a patched master.dat and an empty DATA folder in this picture so the file & folder values in kB don't match, but this is what the general setup should be like.
