Fallout 3 GOTY crash issue...

Post » Tue Aug 09, 2011 4:09 pm

I recently bought this laptop and purchased the GOTY edition of Fallout 3 with the DLC's through Steam, but .I continue to have issues to have issues to get this game to run.... even after attempting the many fixes I have found amongst several forums but it is still to no prevail.... after each failure I undone what the (fix) asked me to do, so here I am seeking assistance from whom ever is willing to help me....

The Game will launch its opening title sequence no problem, but after I select NEW GAME it will continue to the loading screen the load bar on the bottom will spin once or twice around then I will get a message box while the game goes into a black screen windowed mode, the message box says Fallout 3 has stopped working with the option to close the program......

I list (some) of the results of the dxdiag below if you need to see it.... for device and driver purposes of-course....

Similar to almost all high intensity 3D games, this one requires a graphics card made by a company that undrstands games and gaming. Those two are AMD and nVIDIA. Intel doesn't count, and laptops cannot be upgraded, so you made a bad choice buying that one, sorry.

Card name: Intel? HD Graphics

Like Gorath said above, your Intel integrated graphics cannot run the game properly. (They are good for battery life, but terrible for games)

There is a modified .dll floating around that will force the game to run on Intels video hardware.....but it may cause overheating to your laptop or stability issues with your OS.

I was having the exact same problem as the original poster. I purchased the game from Steam and it downloaded fine, but when I went to start a new game it crashed to the desktop. After I updated my video driver I get a new error from the launcher saying that "Your display does not support the selected resolution." Yet there is no option to change the resolution in the launcher, it is just a blank box.

Here are my specs

Update

I'm having the same problem for Fallout New Vegas. The launcher tells me I need to adjust my resolution, but the resolution box under options is blank.

Ahh I see I see. I was thinking when I bought that laptop, I thought it had to have better parts than my old desktop I had that played the Fallout 3 well, that died on me.
I pieced that thing together over a time lapse of 2 months....but it lasted me for a fun long time was sad to see it go :(
Asus A8N-SLI Deluxe
AMD Athlon64 3800+
4GB Corsair Memory
XFX Fatal1ty GeForce 8500 GT 512MB (always planed on buying a second for SLI never got to it >.<)
Rocketfish 750W Power Supply

But thanks for the tip, Starforce9, about the dll. I got it to work, and no problems yet as of far.... I'll keep in mind the heat issue, but I tend to spend more time messing with the models of weapons and what not ingame and Blender. Than I do actually following the story :P well that and the RTS mod :P
