Hey
I've recently purchased the Fallout 3 GOTY edition. However, the game crashes every time I try to start a new game, and with no explanation why. I've searched forums high and low for help, but to no avail - I don't have Daemon, Alcohol etc and multiple system searches have led me to believe there is nothing called "ffdshow" on my computer that could interfere.
Any ideas from anyone else?

This game has a minimum video requirement, which is only offered by AMD and by nVIDIA, not by Intel. Intel's video offerings are all well below the minimum, and are SUPPOSED to crash the game. That's about all that they are good for.

I knew Alienware was coming to this when Dell bought the brand. An Intel video chip! Ridiculous!

What does an Intel chip have to do with it? The M11x comes with an integrated Intel chip for basic functions but also has an NVIDIA GT335M GeForce for gaming. I run Crysis with all settings maxed except for postpart and water just to make things smooth...I'm quite sure it's Fallout 3 capable.

You need to find out why Windows' Direct3D doesn't know about anything other than the Intel chip (not the game's fault here at all). There's probably been a wrong switch thrown in your Setup of the mainboard, making the Intel chip the Primary one, not secondary (didn't you even try reading what the DxDiag Report was trying to tell you, or run any of the tests at all?) .

I posted that DX thing becsause the first guy who replied asked me to. I'd never previously heard of it before - I'm not very savvy with these things, and though I scanned the report it didn't make a lot of sense to me. I apologize for my ignorance but I am trying to learn.

Windows uses either Direct3D (preferred) or OpenGL functions to handle the pixels on the screen to create 3D-appearing graphics. If Direct3D does not even know about any video other than Intel's, it cannot play this game for you using the correct hardware. It is possible that reinstalling Dx9 will straighten things out for you, but if the DxDiag still cannot find a normal video card after that, you may need to take the computer back where you bought it to find out why not.

The Alienware M11X series do come with a discrete GT 335M, but it also comes in conjuct with the switchable Intel Integrated Chipset. Many owners have had problems here with this specific notebook and the game since it can't seem to make the GT 335M the video option to play with. From myunderstanding, the Alienware MX11 will not allow you to disable the onboard Intel chip either. I believe owners have gotten around the issue by downloading the latest Nvidia Optimus Drivers and then "Whitelisting" this game in its options. Perhaps this will help:
