I have purchased a version of this game through Steam and after many different attempts have been unsuccessful at running the program. It loads and it crashes constantly through just the opening sequence of the child being born. After a dozen attempts I have not gotten to the opening scene where you are in the vault walking as a baby. I have tried running through Steam as well as without and neither worked. I have tried turning off antialiasing and anisotropic filtering. This did not help. I have tried playing in windows mode as well. That didnt work either. I once awhile back played this game on PS3 and am now trying to enjoy the GOTY edition but it just doesnt seem to run. Can anyone help please or offer some ideas?

First fix to try would be limiting your cores to 2 or possibly 1.

To limit the CPU , you need to edit the ini.file found with your saves.
Here is the common location of the ini file found with your saves.
>>> "Mydocuments\Mygames\Fallout 3\FALLOUT.INI"

Open up the fallout.ini and find the line that says "bUseThreadedAI=0" and change it to "bUseThreadedAI=1"

Hit enter, and under it add this line "iNumHWThreads=2" Close and Save the document. (you can select 1,2&4 ,,, 2 is just the most common)

Try 2 first , then 1 if it still dont work .... seeing how your CPU would be fast enough even on 1 core.

Im curious how you are able to run it without Steam ... Or did you mean Games for Windows Live?

I am currently trying a full uninstall/reinstall. Thinking perhaps this might help.

Before though, I had tried those fixes using the bUseThreadedAI tweaks. Neither worked. Same with the inumHWthreads. This is the cause of my desperation. I figured if those were the most common issues then I would be good to go. But neither were able to aid me in my endeavor.

If there are other commonly known fixes then please throw them out there. I dont want this to be an empty investment. Thank you for all your efforts..

Also, about the steam thing. I tried running through the Steam UI and also just the fallout exe file in the steamapps folder. Thats what I was referring to. Both boot in a different manner as well. I dont think Steam has to be running to play the game. I read under another post that it would be best to move and update Steam's settings to be under >Program Files as opposed to >Program Files(x86). So, I have performed that so far as well.

Be aware that the Bulldozer (FX) processors are less X86 compatible in some regards than games can deal with. They cause some very strange game symptoms sometimes, and are not popular with games players.

Okay, so latest developments. Things are increasingly worse now. I uninstalled/reinstalled and tried with and without the tweaks mentioned here and I cant even get the initial "Please Stand By" screen to stick. I have also tried running from Steam and from the Fallout.exe file. With both I get the same result. It quickly kicks me out and I get this error:
