Fallout.ini keeps reverting to default

Post » Sat Oct 02, 2010 8:39 am

Hey guys, having lots of crashes now with the latest update pushed out. The crashes seem consistent with what I saw in fallout 3 with my i7 920. It doesn't like bUseThreadedAI=0 so I'm trying to change that to 1 and add inumHWThreads=2 but the file reverts back to the default settings upon playing and it's still crashing.

I have the write permissions to the remote folder disabled and the fallout prefs there were deleted so that's not where it's overwriting from. Anyone have luck modding the fallout.ini and having it stick?

I think you need to make the changes to the FalloutPrefs.ini instead.

I just updated that file and it stuck, but I'm still crashing. I had to change the fallout.ini file for fallout 3 to stop crashing.

Very disappointed I cannot play the game now due to crashes within about 1-2 minute of loading my game.

Changes also need to be made to fallout_default.ini (and it's backup once they turn steam cloud back on) in the game folder or the next time there is a patch or you run config from the launcher you may loose any modifications. (still could if they update the default in a patch. )

So, to reiterate, there's (3) places where Fallout New Vegas INI files come from? You've got:

1) The Steam Cloud folder:
C:\Program Files\Steam\userdata\########\remote\
- falloutprefs.ini
- currently disabled by Bethesda until they fix the savegame issue

2) The SteamApps folder:
C:\Program Files\Steam\steamapps\common\fallout new vegas\
- Four or five different INI files here (Fallout_default.ini, low.ini, medium.ini, high.ini, veryhigh.ini)

3) The INI files in your My Documents\My Games folder:
C:\Documents and Settings\USERNAME\My Documents\My Games\FalloutNV
- fallout.ini and falloutprefs.ini

So if I've read this correctly, the one in the SteamApps folder is the master that gets replaced every time they patch?
If you go into the launcher options and choose low / medium / high / ultra / default, your INI file will be replaced with those INI files?
Where/when does the fallout.ini vs falloutprefs.ini files in My Games come into play?
When does the falloutprefs.ini from the SteamCloud (remote) folder get used?
