Fallout 4 as an Isometric Game

Post » Wed Dec 02, 2015 2:05 am

Well the isometric view also encourages turn-based combat, which some prefer more than others. As I get older ... and my body ages ... I tend to be drawn to turn-based combat more. XCOM-EU, Shadowrun:Dragonfall, etc. I've played in the last year and really enjoyed them.

It doesn't look bad. I still prefer 3d.

3D isn't the real issue. Games of any style can be 3D. Those screenshots would not likely be possible in a 2D game.

*No one here [since the beginning of the Fallout forum here] has asked for, or expected anything but a 3D game.

Perhaps you meant first person perspective. (Of which there are both 2d and 3d examples. )

:chaos: This is a 2D Fallout parody: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mVAyhlgYSc4

It looks very nice visually. I think I would still prefer the first person perspective.

I've always had a slight issue with Isometric, even though a lot of my personal favorites of my childhood used the aesthetic. Hero X, for example, a grossly unknown and buried game.

Fallout, though, I think can only be better in it's current aesthetic. I would be very disappointed if Fallout 5 went Isometric.

That's a little harsh.

Wasteland 2 isn't a bad game.

There is nothing wrong with Isometric games, and turn based combat. Love both, but i don't need it in every game i play. Personally I prefer Fallout to be first/thirdperson, but that doesn't diminish the old games, they are still amazing. I wish they would remake them in the Wasteland 2 engine, unity(?), not quite sure what its called. Like the screenshots.

I support the idea of an "HD remake of the originals". Hell, hand it over to Obsidian. What are they doing lately?

Not saying it was. Would have been better if they axed the whole isometric thing.

I have to disagree with your assumption that the industry will veer away from high fidelity visual and open world gameplay.

Some games are designed with a certain Aesthetic in mind. The developer chooses it, and they run with it, and build around it. I'm not a fan of the isometic view much anymore, but that's not to say it shouldn't be a thing anymore.

A lot of games use it, and use it really well.

It doesn't really work with the modern fallout, because then you would miss all those neat little graphical details Bethesda does because the camera is WAAAYYYY up there rather than where you can fully appreciate them. Not to mention playing "find the pixel" with smaller items you could pick up in the world, and lordy all the containers in that view...

Not to mention, the settlement feature in isometric view would be horrendous in isometric.

I loved DOS and it also used isometric. But again, these games are also turn-based. Can you imagine a 3D 1st person game that has turn based combat? Some of the old 2D scrollers were that way, but if you are going to be turn based I much prefer the isometric view.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s3t_Qecnpac https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fvh5S562Z0YAnd both quite good games too. (Well, technically the first is pahse based, but close enough --- and not all that dissimiliar from F3's and NV's VATS, though of course much, much more comprehensive.)

Never seened first person turned based, but I have seen close up 3rd person. Gladius on the XBOX. Gladiator arena fighting with turn based grid combat. Good on paper, was really sloppy in execution.

Same here, I've played nothing but those two games (besides the Witcher 3 ) this year.

Turn-based combat and isometric view is strong as ever, and I'm loving every second of it.

However, in Fallout's case, I have to agree with Gizmo:

I'm really looking forward to the WL2 Director's Cut release, I just wish it was coming sooner than October 13. I put my original playthrough on hold since saves won't be compatible, but that was when it was supposed to come out in the summer. I'm worried I won't have time to complete it before FO4 svcks up all my time.

Those mock-up screenshots look great. I love first-person perspective for the new Fallout games, but I also enjoy more traditional CRPG's. For a party-based game, isometric view (or rather, pulled-back camera 3D view) and turn-based combat make sense and work well. Anyone who says that turn-based combat is boring hasn't played XCOM.

Yeah I've been re-playing XCOM some since the announcement of XCOM2. Those turns can be intense.

I also agree if you have more than one companion isometric works better so you can see your whole party.

But I do prefer 1st person for TES games and later FO games, though I still love FO2 and wouldn't want to play it any other way.

Looks like that would be a great game. I like fallout as it is with Beth but I do like me some isometric/turned based games as well.

I wouldn't say strong as ever.

Strong death throes seems more accurate.

Yeah that's exactly what we need to go back to; a dated perspective. That'll bring back the good ol' days. Seriously why do you even bother though? You've already decided to roll around in cynicism and hyperbole (along with a few other user unnamed users...), is your life so sad that you jut feel the need to spread you jaded opinion wherever you go? Like we get it, Bethesda butchered the franchise they actually saved or whatever.

No to me!

Just from the top of my head, currently in development: Xcom 2, Divinity: Original sin 2, Shadowrun: Hong Kong, Hard West...

Crowdfunding, steam and indy games are, to say the least, keeping isometric view alive and well.

Dated perspective?

You mean like First Person Perspective is dated?

(FPP games came before isometric games.)

There is nothing dated (or wrong) with ether presentation style. But they are suited for different intended experiences. Many Isometric games are not trying to offer the [non-visual] experience of most FPP titles, and neither are most FPP games offering the [non-visual] aspect of the Isometric ones.

It might help to think of them as alternate formats... Similar to comparing TV shows...

Like Law & Order vs Survivor;

James Burke's Connections vs X-Factor.
Two different ways to fill the hour. Just as the first half, and latter half of the Fallout... :sadvaultboy: series... have two diametrically opposed formats of gameplay.
